1000 users!

lemmy.world just reached 1000 users.

Please remember that the server was created June 1st! So still might notice some startup issues... but so far so good! Welcome @all!

At this rate we'll hit 2000 in the next hour...

You can thank reddit CEO lol, he just held the most pathetic AMA I've seen, people are even angrier than before :D

p.s. also watch out for next Monday, that's when the reddit blackout begins

23

Ah. There's a donation link on the front page. Just set up a recurring donation.

At this point you will be probably the biggest instance before the start of the new week 😂

Well let's see if it doesn't crash before that. I can scale the hardware but not sure about scaling the software yet..

2
lemmy.world

Since the front end is TS docker it should be easy to scale with kubernetes. I have no idea about the rust backend though.

1

Yes but there's no scaling that helps bad queries :-)

Ruudreply
lemmy.world

I use grafana for that. Might make that public someday

2
lemmy.world

My first comment, can't wait to use Lemmy for the next 15 years.

Fuck /u/spez!

Ah, you must also have been part of the original Digg exodus then?

5
netburnrreply

Yes but I actually liked Kevin, I enjoyed all the side video podcast and skits they did on the side.

Oh yeah the whole gang was great for a while, until it all got fucked.

And slashdot before that. Narwhals and whisky and all that. But we don't talk about usenet. And here we are again.

PS it's way too easy to accidentally block people on here. And then I had to go to a deeply buried settings page to unblock you again.

2

Thanks for the unblock. And hey, you learned something new. I'm actually thinking of going back on Usenet.

1

Great thing about fediverse, maybe @ruup goes full blown tyrannical, we can go over to another server.

If it's possible to build perpetual social media, this is how it would look

4

At least on the mobile web page, there is a button near the top of the page that says Sidebar. That will give basic stats like total users on the instance.

2
lemmy.world

Is this where the cool kids are hanging these days? (Just joined as a refugee from that other place)

11
Logireply
lemmy.world

Dammit! Why does everywhere I go turn out to be where the grumpy old people hang out?

Oh...

3

Just noticed lemmy.world is now 1 of the 4 instances recommended on join-lemmy. Congratulations on that too!

9
lemmy.world

Just signed up myself! Long time RIF/old.reddit user, hoping to find new (better!) communities. Hello everyone!

9
lemmy.world

Hello fellow reddit refugees. Very interested in learning Lemmy and figuring out how contribute to the community.

9

Good evening! All new to me too! Looking forward to figuring things out for a new start!

5

That's great! I remember just a few days ago that it had only 100 users, it's growing quickly!

9
lemmy.world

Wasn't it at like 200 just 2-3 days ago? That's a massive increase!

9
Ruudreply
lemmy.world

Yeah the server was just installed June 1st. Growth is crazy.

(But I've seen crazier with mastodon.world, which had 4000 new users per hour at the peak..

12

There is still time to see that sort of growth on here, particularly when reddit goes dark next week or shortly after that

4
lemmy.world

It seems a bit laggy to me, but that's hardly surprising. I hope we can form a good little community of outsiders here! 👍

8
Ruudreply
lemmy.world

Can you tell me what's laggy? Only thing I noticed is the 'Post' or 'Reply' that takes too long.

7

Pretty much everything has a bit of lag on my end. Not complaining, I understand why, just letting you know.

7
veroxiireply
lemmy.world

The post thing is weird. Even when I'm on lemmy.world, but post on communities from other instances it seems pretty fast. But posting on a local community is slow. Very weird. Locks on a table somewhere?

6
fedconreply
lemmy.world

I'm guessing it's the larger instances that are lagging due to the sudden amount of users that have joined.

Most new users tend to join the bigger ones and that exacerbates the problem.

Edit: This comment took ~8 seconds.

CannaVetreply
lemmy.world

I'm still taking some time to post but it's certainly better than before your upgrade.

EDIT: Still ~10 seconds or so for this comment.

3
Ruudreply
lemmy.world

Yeah, that's gonna need some troubleshooting...

5

The first thing I commented this morning seemed faster but of course once I mention it I jinx myself and it's about the same as it was, for me anyway. Doesn't bother me too much though, I know it's a new thing and a learning curve for everybody.

1

I'm a noob at this but could the distance between the user and the server location have an effect? Of course the latancy shouldn't be 10 sec but if there is some wonky routing going on idk. As I said I'm very nob at this

0

Hi from beehaw! Welcome to the fediverse and glad to have all of you join us!

8
lemmy.world

Just made a new general Star Wars community! I have no idea how to grow something like that, so any Star Wars fans come on over and help!

7

Congrats! Thanks for accepting me. I can't wait to see where this site goes!

Darkbluereply

Another Reddit refugee here. I guess after June 30th member numbers will explode?

9

They don't have to leave leave. They can just join here and reduce the time they give reddit. Little by little they can just get out of that and into other stuff.

9
Darkbluereply
lemmy.world

Ah, give it time. Change is scary. And it is easy to be complacent. But 'luckily' Reddit will chase them to here.

7

I think the biggest impediment (besides the learning curve of the new format) is the fact that there are many more users and much more activity on Reddit. It will take time to build enough of a user base on lemmy to convince people to join.

That being said, the subreddit blackout starting June 12th will remove that advantage for Reddit. Even if most of the subreddits only participate for 48 hours, that might be sufficient to drive enough people to lemmy that it becomes perceived as a viable alternative.

Fingers crossed!

7

Congrats!! That's quite a milestone in such a short period :)

Edit: sorry if this is not the proper place to ask but is there a way to donate for server expenses?

6
Ruudreply
lemmy.world

I just added donation info to the sidebar, see home page.

9
Ruudreply

At this moment around 20 EUR/mo so not too much, but would like to be able to scale when needed.

Hi everyone, another Reddit migrant. I've been playing around a few Lemmy communities with my Mastodon account but got fed up with Mastodon's interface for interacting with Lemmy communities and decided to join a real instance. Lemmy.world seems like a pretty cool place in the Threadiverse, thanks for having me!

4

Just joined myself, I have a feeling there will be an even bigger influx of users soon.
Excited to see where it will all go!

3
lemmy.world

Hi folks, just joined Lemmy to see what it's all about. This seemed like a good thread (is that the term?) to make a first comment :-)

2
lemmy.world

Cheers! Looking forward to find out more, feels very promising already.

2

Community's very small at the time, but it'll get larger with time

2

Mildly Infuriating has nearly hit that milestone too! I am so excited for the future of Lemmy! GG everyone! 👍😄

Weird question are you the same person who made the Dash-to-Dock extension for gnome?

2
lemmy.world

Am I indirectly supporting lemmy devs by being on lemmy.world? I'd rather not be supporting tankies.

1

Just by using their software. They have no other involvement in this server.

5
Roverseerreply
lemmy.ml

There's already a mobile app for the entire Lemmy community though, and it's Jerboa

6
lemmy.world

Not the person who asked, but thanks for this, just installed it and it's great!

If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask!

1
lemmy.world

Thanks, will do!

Actually, if you don't mind, can you say a little about linking? I don't really undey the format with the exclamation mark at the start and then the rest in the same format as an email. If I wanted to link to this community for example what is the link?

1

I think to link, the format's !communityname@homeinstance. For example, this community is, I think, ![email protected] (I might be wrong tho, but that format works for me)

Okay, since your home instance is lemmy.world (think of the instances as your home "continent"), you should use lemmy.world as your instance
