Looks like I've just made my first post ever! 😅🪭 Good morning and goodnight lovely people of the daily thread 🧵🪡

17

Haha no. Just my workplace and only temporary for a few weeks.

If it turns out to be female. If it's a rooster, then it's coq qu vin all round I reckon.

6

Due to popular demand all pre orders have been suspended.

Have a nice day.

4

What?! I’ve never been offered a toothpaste, what else has my dentist been hiding from me.

4

Not offered. They're usually on the counter at reception in a bowl. If they're not, you gotta ask.

2

I'm all about the free mini floss packs. Got me onto my favourite brand (Gorilla), that shit works way better than everything else I've tried

Reference and police checks are underway for the new role. All goes well should have an offer shortly.

Excited, cause it's something new. Nervous cause it's something new. Anxious, cause I really don't want to meet new people.

Mum Had Ham and She Didn't Give Me Any! (Okay, She Gave Me a Bit, But I Want MORE).

He feels it will be a Sunday Times Best-seller.

My cats will write the foreword, and give it a five star review!

I have Seether by Veruca Salt stuck in my head this morning. No idea why.

Not complaining, takes me back to my uni days, maybe my brain is feeling nostalgic.

Well that’s enough news for today. Clive Palmer has a new political party, called Trumpets of Patriots. No this is not a Beetota advocate headline.

10

I really hope he fails in spectacular fashion, there’s no place in Australia for a trump like party to exist.

Also I’m sick of his ads on tv.

Edit: Just to add he was forced to use this name because he failed to register his United Party name in time.

8

ffs, that's like saying Hitler for Patriots in the 1930s

I recall seeing a video some time ago, where a UK journalist/presenter (with a bit of a posh accent) was fawning over the fact that instead of going out for lunch during work, one could pre-purchase ingredients such as bread, meats and cheese, and combine them at home and bring this into work.

Discovering sandwiches in your 30's is truly something.

I remember reading Ridley Scott always has 9 projects on the go. And I read somewhere else many artists have ideas and projects that go no where or they drop.

Knowing these things has eased my mind somewhat, I felt like a failure because I would get new ideas before I finished an old one. Knowing this has helped me keep enthusiasm. I also keep a diary.

3

A brain printer for dreams would be so cool. I love my dreams, I'd miss them if they vanished. But I can never really explain them to someone, so that would be awesome.

3

On the subject of things that should really be taught in school, one of my top requests would be Identification and Management of Narcissists.

I've recently had someone go into defend me against a narcissist abuser in my life, and all the defender has managed to do is become a target himself and escalate the narcissist's rage towards me.

8
aussie.zone

Narcissists in my experience are expert manipulators. The way they can turn things is quite breathtaking. I'm sorry you and your defender are going through this.

8
Pilkreply

I fortunately clocked and blocked him immediately. The folks he's managed to bait into his subsequent smear campaign (including this defender) are now learning a lesson of their own, lol.

The good news is the more he escalates the less I care -- he comes across as absolutely nutso which makes him way easier to clock.

6

so many hugs

smear campaigns enrage me ♾️👿 it's one of my button issues

4

I am still surprised at the depths of moral depravity a narcissist will sink to.

they would support nazism if they thought it would make me look and feel bad ( they tried that one )

but really, they believe nothing, tomorrow they could say they support the true teachings of Jesus

it's just fleeting emotion and words

so ignore it

best thing to do is leave them

unfortunately sometimes they get in positions of power , like trump

7

Person walking around co-working office with no shoes on. I've got no issue if you take your shoes off under your desk, but then walking around the place with no shoes, nope. It's a workplace, not your home.

8
aussie.zone

Last receptionist would take her shoes off at her desk and then stick her feet out from under her desk. WHYYY did she think customers would be okay with seeing that?

Though she also sewed at her desk, played phone games and stole about $3k worth of stuff, so clearly she wasn't quite the professional she tried to pretend she was.

5

If you've worked there longer than them you could say "hey. I wouldn't walk around bare foot. I've seen some things on this carpet".

2

You might be able to remind them that it’s an OHS issue being barefoot assuming you have a policy in place.

Not been feeling too well lately, resting and watching old stuff.

Shows like Extreme Cheapskates are just fake rage bait. Yeah, a woman with a full face of makeup, false lashes and an entire set of false nails is so frugal she uses dryer lint for makeup removal. She drives an SUV to the supermarket to beg for meat scraps. Pull the other one!

I hope that episode of Adults Adopting Adults was faker than it looked though. I’m aware that these shows are very scripted and heavily edited but Danny was seriously concerning. I actually feel like that situation was one of the rare ones the camera didn’t overplay.

7
aussie.zone

Extreme Cheapskates makes me feel yucky inside. I watched one where this dude teaches people how to cook gourmet on a budget but he didn't tell them until after that he'd foraged herbs from the side of the road, dumpster dived the local seafood joint for scraps of lobster tails and picked out half drunk bottles of wine from the bins at the beach and filtered them through his homemade goon bag.

7

Rage bait is why. Show runners coach them to do or say bizarre controversial things.

Very much on brand for exploitative reality tv especially in the 2000s

4

Ah ha. The foraging, well fine ok but the dreg collecting and then pouring them into what looked like a colostomy bag was an eye opener.

4
aussie.zone

Extreme Cheapskates isn't a show I watch but for some reason I have seen that one, maybe on YouTube? Her man has some people round to watch the game and she makes a hideous lasagna from boiled fat water or something, is that the one?

2

Much less stress in the kitchen. Made a kickass mushroom and pea curry with cashew cream, and finally cooked up the cabbage (with possibly too much of ajwain seeds). Everything is clean and tidy and I don't feel so overwhelmed. Success!

I'm going to have another crack at Juice... 25% of the way through and not that impressed, seems like a lot of heavy handed exposition atm. But I'll keep going

6

Also beef? That's what's in there? Hmm TIL.

3

I was just going to buy frozen ones to restock my supplies and also because they're much cheaper than getting them cooked from a shop.

2

I'm going to be buying frozen ones but i'll need to restock after I go through what I have my freezer for the next few days, I guess I was more curious than anything.

Guess I'll find out about the shapes, if they're the same then I think the seasoning will be slim pickings.

Also, 'red food colouring' differs between countries/jurisdictions. What counts as 'red food colouring' in the USA and South America for example, is banned in Europe and Australia as being mildly carcinogenic. This happened back in the 1980s. Here we use a different compound for the purpose - eg annatto. So where and when was the original study done? Essential to know exactly WHICH red food colouring is the potential culprit. Also yellow food dye is similar situation. Was that in the original study?????
Actually I think I know that study - it's fairly famous for being deeply flawed in it's methodology and interpretation of results. It also pre-dates the numerical code for additives that we see on labels nowadays. So it's hard to actually compare to modern products however processed in this country.

7

also worth noting that red food dye in the US is usually hand in hand with massively oversugared foods.

It's not the ADHD that's being managed, it's the sugar crack

5
aussie.zone

First thing that comes to my mind anyway is: what kind of red-food-colouring food is NOT high in sugar?

7
aussie.zone

what kind of red-food-colouring food is NOT high in sugar

Imitation crab sticks.

*has a quick squizz at the interwebble...

Hrmm no.. lotsa sugar there too.

4

Oh man, what a blast from the past. My cousins got banned from red food dye back in the 80s and early 90s. One of them makes a point to down a bottle of red cordial when his mum visits just to rub it in her face lol.

The sugar, otoh...

4

Melbcat still takes her breaks in the other room and cuddles a lot but she seems to have perked up a bit. She’s often finessing me for treats and I think she can see them - I shook out a few crumbs which she ignored but when I placed a full treat in front of her she went for it instantly.

She also jumped over a small box to go look out the screen door.

Opinions wanted.

I'm looking to live right by the seaside but it's hard to get a place.

Is it better to get a bit of a shitty place in a wonderful location ( the place I'm in now is a disgrace so it's not like I would be going from a good place to a dump, I'm already in a dump )

or a better place in a worse location?

I reckon I can fix up a place to be more comfortable but I can't actually move a house to a better location.

6
dumblederpreply
aussie.zone

Location > House quality. A castle in Clyde is still in Clyde. Your kids are old and out on their own yeah.

7

If I were buying I'd pay the biggest amount possible and pay off asap

I hate borrowing money

4

The classic advice is to buy the worst house in the best street/location. I reckon this applies here too. Location location location.

6

Assuming it’s not going to be a big or expensive problem I’d prefer a slightly crummy place than a bad area. You can fix up a bad place but there’s not a lot you can do about the area and a bad one will wear on you.

Also if you resold someone would likely want that area regardless of the house’s condition.

5
aussie.zone

I also reckon go for a preferred location, as long as the house repairs would be manageable. It would be a nicer environment to live in and also better resale value in case you decide to move.

2
aussie.zone

Ah.. I’d say the same thing, provided the rent was reasonable and house ok to live in. I reckon the problem with seaside towns is competition from holidaymakers would bump the prices up

4

Gonna make a mushroom and pea curry tonight thickened with blitzed, soaked cashews... and use all the implements I need, for I do not need to hand wash most of them💃 yayayayay

6

You've thought about the pros and cons for each. I would try to push it to the back of my mind for a few days and do other things- let it percolate away in your subconscious.

Come back to it on Friday or whenever you need to decide, and I reckon you'll know what you want.

6

Sigh. The zucchinis never did go wild like I hoped. So far I got 4 fruits from 4 plants which I gave to a friend. I wish there had been more to donate to the community pantry. Maybe if I’d kept the original 12 that sprouted!

The issue of course is limited money and space which meant planting them in salvaged pots that were too small, and limited energy/ability leading to not enough fertiliser applications.

I’m still going on that string bag but can’t seem to concentrate enough to get into an automatic groove.

5
TinyBreakreply
aussie.zone

Mine've done really well. Kinda glad I only ended up with one plant tbh. was getting 4 or 5 per week at its peak, started to slow now though.

3

Maybe next time I should get big pots and dig in manure, and try a hybrid variety. (For a higher yield and less vulnerable to disease.) Sounds like a lot of lifting though

Poor Melbcat cringed sideways into an avoidant curl and stayed frozen like that when she saw the meds coming. Even for a good minute when I got back up to get the food chaser I’d forgotten.

It’s both funny and sad. I wish I could explain why I was doing this. And that the meds cocktail is getting so large because I can’t be sure she’ll eat medicated food. If she doesn’t reliably eat the wet food even the tasteless stuff has to be added to the oral syringe

5
Taleyareply
aussie.zone

chat to your vet, we found the best way for Punky was to soak his thyroid meds in sour cream or tuna juice. Mix it up and they're yomping it off the spoon, no stress and a delicious treat.

I did become a ninja at the vit B shots though

7
aussie.zone

It’s hard because she’s a bit queasy from antibiotics and the blood pressure meds.

I use a lot of yummy toppings to try and get her to eat the wet (nutritional yeast, baby food, cracker crumbs, plain natural Greek yogurt etc) but it all comes down to whether she’s feeling up to wet food.

She’s still steadily eating the dry food though so at least she’s eating.

Yeah the B12… I’ve awkwardly given one shot under vet supervision but it’s hard with my hands

check with the vet first, don't' want to use anything that could negate the meds. Just had to change my NBN again thanks to NBNs shitty 6 months deals. Exetel were the cheapest with $65.99 for 100/20 Mbps for 6 months. But the kicker was 100 bucks on top cash back (in like 6 months). If you feel like changing let me know, I think I can get a referral code for you. Dont know if that gives both of us a discount or just me though.

4

no problems going to the TIO on them if thats the case. But I just cant be spending the amount of money aussie or superloop want for NBN these days.

2
aussie.zone

Okay, I bought a $30 rotary tool from ebay (including among other things a few drill bits and a cutting disc) and then a 60L outdoor bin with lid from the big green shed.

::: spoiler spoiler I wanted a proper drill but to be honest I won’t be able to tackle jobs big enough to need one. This little battery operated tool will probably be more than enough for anything I get up to.

:::

My physical health is still not great so I don’t know if I can handle maintaining a compost bin and might have to give up if it gets bad again. But let’s see? I want to tidy up my yard but a green bin would likely be vandalised or stolen. Worst case scenario I could just list the compost bin on Gumtree with or without the contents.

I’m far enough into the crochet bag that I’ve almost finished the first ball of yarn. I’ll learn to join another colour and then find stuff to watch while I keep going

4
aussie.zone

The really important bit about compost is to add at least as much dry carbon matter (autumn leaves, hay, dried lawn clippings, shredded cardboard, shredded newspaper) as wet vegetable scraps. Tea bags/coffee grounds are sorta in between. There are whole tomes of info on doing compost but it's pretty foolproof if you keep the dry/wet ratios about equal with the dry predominating. I would also recommend getting a bag of worms to put in the compost cos they do wonders to keep the compost non-smelly. And a longish stick/fork to stir up the layers occasionally to keep it properly aerated and cooking away. I use a very old 3 prong hoe with a shortish handle to do this in mine. Once a compost bin/heap is cooking away merrily, it can cope with almost anything that was once alive. Including all the stuff that they say you can't put in it such as citrus peel and meat bones and avocado stones and eggshells. I once put an old pair of jeans in my heap, and there wasn't anything left of them except the buttons & rivets a year later.

3
aussie.zone

Oh there will be plenty of dry leaves and shredded paper, also dried or fresh grass clippings. I actually won’t have many wet vegie scraps or fresh stuff which might be an issue.

Worms sound good but I’m afraid to kill them through neglect by letting them dry out. And not enough edible vegie stuff.

I have a garden fork if that works?

Also is there a way to keep it warm enough over winter that it keeps cooking?

1
aussie.zone

Garden fork is perfect! Also, drying worms doesn't actually happen - they go into aestivation, having laid eggs. As soon as things moisten up, the eggs hatch and the adults re-activate. Yes, they are less active in winter, but they don't actually stop - just burrow deeper which is what you want for circulation of nutrients.
Wet vegie scraps are an extra - you might need to give the compost an occasional bucket of water but seriously, the worms actually generate quite a bit of moisture themselves. I've never had a dryness problem that couldn't be fixed with a bucket of water whatever the season. Worms are the gift that keeps on giving. They eat the dry stuff too - and turn it into wonderful worm castings. Just takes a bit longer.
Most compost problems are too much moisture and too little aeration. Worms fix both.
As you've probably figured, I'm a fan of worms. I like the way they do the heavy lifting while I kick back with a glass of wine.

2
aussie.zone

I’m just scared I’m going to hurt the little beasts. Especially with a fork. Also monies 🪙🤏

1

The fork seems to be OK - I had a few casualties when I used a spade but they seem to wriggle away from a fork or hoe.

For the fungus gnat fighters, I got these sticky sheets in the post today and cut them up into traps approximately the same dimension as these Bunnings ones.

Works out to like 8¢/trap (or less) instead of $1.29/trap. Being able to make dozens means you can get way more coverage. Also customised the size to be wider for my larger plants, and want to experiment with different shapes just for fun.

They seem to be working, too, in just a few hours many have already caught gnats.
