Protesters in cities across the US rally against Trump’s policies, Project 2025 and Elon Musk

Demonstrators gathered in cities across the U.S. on Wednesday to protest the Trump administration’s early actions, decrying everything from the president’s immigration crackdown to his rollback of transgender rights and a proposal to forcibly transfer Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.

...

The protests were a result of a movement that has organized online under the hashtags #buildtheresistance and #50501, which stands for 50 protests, 50 states, one day. Websites and accounts across social media issued calls for action, with messages such as “reject fascism” and “defend our democracy.”

At work--I can't afford to protest with what's coming for this economy

60

That's fair, keep the protest attitude, but take care of your family first!

28

People worked right up till they were put in camps in the 30's, too.

Don't worry other people will do it just like last time, too.

16

Control what you can control and pick your battles. Aimless protests or food for my family? Unengaging cliche quip or simple downvote and move on? Self-restraint is hard but comes with maturity. You'll get there eventually comrade

unemployment and homelessness speed run any% world record

there is a very good reason our economy is set up like it is.

12

I've got bad news for you if you think doing your capitalist duty and going into work while fascists take over is going to somehow work out later.

8

I'm not doing nothing in the mean time. I'm arming myself better and scheduling range time, stocking up on non perishables (rip my savings account), reaching out and donating more to some of my state wide civil rights organizations, and I'm forcing all my friends and family to switch over to encrypted call/messaging (Signal) that's harder to track and read contents of. I'll do more as time allows, but it's hard to support any cause if I end up dead of hypothermia under a highway bridge with no resources at my disposal.

Heard it bunches from ads used as an attention-getter. Heard it personally from someone who thought it would help him out--He lost tho.

Laws are only for the poor and only when they don't help them. This is something I don't hear almost ever oddly enough

Examples of Strikes, mass protests, and revolutions that happened when things were easy for the strikers to go out and do them:

Times the police, military, and other centrist citizens did everything to directly stop or persuade them to stop: (all)

3

I was there, not that bad honestly. I would recommend going to the next one if you live in the US.

11

Everyone needs to contribute how they can. Wave a sign, post and repost, volunteer to help those most affected by Trump's policies, get out the vote (especially in the primaries), run for office, make a home garden and help neighbors with theirs, donate old stuff (preferably directly to those that might need it), or just try to have those hard talks with your right-wing family and neighbors. I know a lot of people are quick to just cut people out of their lives, and if it's just ruining you emotionally then do what you gotta do, but half of us deciding the other half is evil and unredeemable then we're never going to get out of this funk.

This isn't about you. The country with one of the most powerful armed forces in the world is about to turn fascist. If protestors can avert the impending catastrophe this might save us from WW3

You know not everything on the internet is necessarily directed at you

15

Sure, and because Americans believe they're heliocentric, they can just ask literally the entire world to ignore their generalisations.

How are you so self-important and haven't drowned like narcissus yet?

-14

I am not from the USA (or any other part of the American continent for that matter). In a thread about protests against fascism in the US, taking place in the US, I think it's fair to assume the "you" refers to US citizens. If there was a thread about Brazilian politics I would assume a similar post refers to Brazilians and that's fine IMO. US exceptionalism is real and no doubt many US Lemmy users also fall into that trap, but this particular post just doesn't seem problematic to me.

lol, fucking Brazilians thinking everyone is talking to them! This isn’t for you lmfao.

9

Projecting... being in the US? Or Projecting being in a protest?

I know "y'all" don't believe in science but take your voodoo astral projection bullshit out of my face.

-10

Ah yes let me just "tune out" 90% of all posts and comments on all content on this platform.

Disingenuous buffoon.

-11

If you find yourself needing to tune out that much, maybe this isn't the platform for you?

I’m a disingenuous buffon yet here you are like a clown making a show you claim you don’t want to be a part of.

Just because you stumbled upon this doesn't make this anyone's fault but you're own.

Imagine planting a landmine, then stepping on it, then saying "who would do such a thing"

1

You guys planted the landmine in your redneck analogy lmao.

Oh and it's "your", not "you're". For someone who only speaks one language you sure are imbecilic.

I would much rather have a typo from typing quickly than be an asshole. I think it's clear who's who.

Take your assumptions and your child-like arguing somewhere else

1

Somebody tell the good folks @ r/50501 about Mastodon and Lemmy I was autobanned (by reddit (not the mods)) as soon as I tried.

piefed.social

are there substantial demands or is this just a peaceful protest before everyone goes home and continues their usual day-to-day?

26

I think right now this is just the bubbles popping up in the pot as the water starts to boil due to all the energy/heat building up

28

The one I was at, the speakers were talking about the various organizations to join to help make a change. Several groups were talking one-on-one and handing out flyers to contact for "next steps."

I personally signed up with Indivisible to demand our congressional representatives do everything they can to slow down Trump. But I also got the names of a couple other organizations if I didn't think that was enough.

"Republicans were asked for comment about the protests and have said: lol, we have all the power. I don't give a fuck what these people are mad about. Be mad, we're just going to label you all antifa terrorists soon."

"Democratic 'leaders' who were asked how they hoped to protect the American people replied: lol, Republicans have all the power. They dont give a fuck what we're mad about. We're going to keep bitching publicly until we all get arrested for being antifa terrorists."

:(

Man wish I could have been in Oklahoma City today. I was stuck fixing a water leak in McAlester instead.

Would have been cool if they rallied in early November.

Ah, good one! But to be fair in early November a lot of us were door-to-door canvassing and/or phonebanking.

26
lemmy.world

Dang, I wish I had heard about this before now! What's the best way you all hear about stuff like this?

14

Those in leadership don't fear for their lives (or their pocketbook?) - so nothing will change. These protests are just noise.

11

Peacefully protesting violent fascists eventually just turns into fascists violently suppressing peaceful protestors. We need more, and actual leadership of a resistance movement.

6

It's never too late to protest for a better life.

Anyway, these people were probably all campaigning before the election too.
