You missed an important part of the headline "is feared to have..."

It says she caught a "cholera like" infection

Yeah. It's The Sun and they put 'dies of starvation' in quotes. They are presenting rumors as facts (again).

Ah, thank you. Was very confused and I am relieved to find that eating food of any kind still does not cause the body to starve. Although honestly, in this damn timeline, i would just shrug at this point

I am relieved to find that eating food of any kind still does not cause the body to starve.

Except it does when you eat nothing but carbs and fiber with little to no fat and protein. You can be vegan all you want, but ignoring basic nutrition will always result in disaster.

You can't get all the nutrients needed from just fruit. This is fact. Just because some fruits may have some fats and proteins doesn't mean they have enough to meet nutritional needs.

14

A major part of their “nutrients” point is fats and proteins, read the last reply again.

Just because some fruits may have some fats and proteins doesn’t mean they have enough to meet nutritional needs.

10

In the article it says she eats sunflower seed sprouts. A cursory google search says these are a complete protein containing all the essential amino acids.

6

It might be possible to live off fruit, but in the end, "food restriction resulting in significantly low body weight" is the definition of anorexia.

I don't claim to know if she put her health in a compromised state or not, but look at recent pictures.

2

And

Zhanna's official cause of death has not been released yet, however.

Additionally she does look anorexic on some pictures, both things have nothing to do with being vegan, people are just pushing their hate by usings someone misfortune.

That could be deliberate to push a narrative against vegans.

4

Yeah, 100%. Look at the other replies to my comment and you can see people getting sucked into that narrative...

Ackshully.... vegans don't get all the essential nutrients to survive 🤡

If any of those boneheads actually read the article, it says she was eating sunflower seed sprouts which are a complete protein.

4

I think you're right, there's some of that, but there's also a healthy dose of "shit on the obnoxious influencer" narrative going on here too.

Correct. This is just clickbait. Veganism is a healthy diet choice. This person suffered from anorexia, but people love to dogpile on vegans.

11
lemmy.zip

That's because the majority of vegans act like self righteous assholes towards non vegans. I have no problem with your diet choice but don't try shaming me for mine, it makes you look like a dick and does not help your cause at all.

Being an omnivore isn't a "cause" in the same way veganism is, and you know it. Most people are omniverous--there is no "cause" to be had. Vegans make up less than 4% of people. On average, a little less than people who follow a "keto" diet.

I know very few, if any, carnivores though, so maybe you're referring to a specific group of people with which I am unfamiliar. Or maybe you were just using self-righteous hyperbole for rhetorical effect in the name of your "cause." Wouldn't that be ironic?

-2
GreenCrushreply

Lol where do you get your data from? There are way more vegans than that. Enjoy the carcinogens bud!

2
WoahWoahreply
lemmy.world

You're right, you're not self-righteous at all!

I got it from polling cited on animalfoundation.org, which puts the number of vegans at around 1.1%. I rounded up because I was trying to be generous. Other polls put the number under .5% in the United States, but I was trying to give you some supportive numbers--otherwise it would actually be more like "there are 8x more people doing Keto than practicing veganism in the United States," and I didn't want to demoralize you and your "not a cause" cause.

We're all enjoying plenty of carcinogens, yourself included, I assure you.

-1

It's so funny that you put so much effort into making yourself feel good about eating the flesh of dead animals. Fuck you.

2

The majority of vegans aren't self righteous assholes. We couldn't give a shit about what you eat. What we are against, is the exploitation, rape, torture, and murder of animals for entertainment.

If you can grow meat in a lab without resorting to the coercion of individuals less privileged than you, that's great and we have no problem with that.

1
nogooduserreply

It’s someone not eating properly. The fact that they didn’t eat animal products is irrelevant. People get Ill and die while eating a shit non vegan diet too.

How much fruit do you have to eat to get a proper amount of proteins per day?

2

Let's say that the recommended daily intake of proteins for average Joe is about 56g and that kidney beans holds 8.6g protein per 100g...

660g of beans per day is a lot of beans. A LOT.

If Joe ever gets tired of beans he can always with over to 500g wholegrain buckwheat per day.

Regarding if the woman was a vegan or not..

Wikipedia Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of animal product — particular in diet — and an associated philosophy that rejects the commodity status of animals. An individual that follows the diet or philosophy is known as a vegan.

She didn't eat any animal product so that pretty much confirms that she was a vegan.

However, she being a vegan doesn't mean that she was a healthy vegan or smart vegan.

3
WoahWoahreply
lemmy.world

Veganism isn't necessarily an unhealthy diet. Like any diet, it CAN be (though I would argue that on average it is easier to eat healthfully on a vegan diet).

Regardless, this woman clearly had an eating disorder. What sort of diet she consumed matters far, far less than the disorder eating itself.

4
Mindlightreply
lemmy.world

Still doesn't change the fact that she was a vegan.

(And just to be annoying: I would say that's it easier to be unhealthy as an omnivore... More options to clog your arteries 😁)

0

That is what I said. It's easier to eat healthfully if you're vegan, I assume. But, you could be a vegan and eating peanut oil fries heavy on the salt all day every day too. That just seems unlikely lol

2

It's such a different request if you say "Can we ban the sun, please?" Props for the caps. 😄

I knew someone who became a fruitatarian. He moved to the Phillipines and only ate Durian (look it up). He was my first glimpse at the "spiritual" > alt light pipeline.

5

Legit everyday posting videos of him slopping up a whole fruit. It was disgusting.

Because not all vegans eat the same restricted diet she was on. And not all vegans are anotexic, vegans do eat enough.

But I guess this vegan did starve herself. I don't even think the sun suggested all vegans diets are deadly.

If they put it like that in the title, I see it like they are strongly implying it. Of course, I might be misreading it.

Also calling someone who eats only five different plants vegan does not sound really truthful to me either.

Her mother Vera Samsonova said she had caught a "cholera-like infection" just hours before she was due to fly home.

Zhanna's official cause of death has not been released yet, however.

The SUN: "SHE DIED OF VEGANISM!"
Lemming: "How does this story have nothing to do with her being vegan?!?!"

I see we're already at Reddit type levels of idiocy.

9
Pandanticreply
kbin.social

Let’s be honest, tho: you don’t know either as her cause of death has not been released. I agree, the other user jumped to conclusions, but you can’t say anything definitive as of now either.

1

I never claimed to know her cause of death. But between "cholera" and "veganism" I'd rather bet on the former.

3

So the story has nothing to do with veganism, is that the point your trying to make? Really unclear

0
kbin.social

Any vegan with half a brain knows that you need more than just fruit to be healthy. Assuming her death by infection is a result of her diet (which is possible, but we don't know that), she died of being an idiot, not a vegan.

9

Well said. She was a raw food vegan on top of everything else. But the real problem is that she seemed to have an eating disorder. I imagine social media didn't help with that issue.

1

The definition of vegan is not eating any animal product.

Her being stupid doesn't change the fact that she was vegan.
