Thank you for the information, but I wasn't so much concerned about the details as enjoying the revelation that a comic strip from my childhood suddenly made sense.
You can make it out of fruit other than tomatoes. A former coworker started a business and made blueberry, strawberry, and mango ketchup. The latter is a really great glaze for pork chops.
