Watching 'Fast and the Furious' and he revs up the engine, holds onto the steering wheel and honks his horn as he's watching the film.

Tbf I’ve driven one with 13 and seen one with some weird ass triple switch transmission.

I think it runs on unicorn blood and the tears of wee demons

Some semi trucks did come with 18-21 speed manual transmissions, so if anything is shifting that high, it'll be this.

That's a sleeper cab. The driver knows all about electronics: navigation, communication, entertainment. It's not surprising that any one of them would have this idea. Most gigs don't consistently route through parking with this much space.

I see about 200 different truck drivers every week and know them all by name. Whether they use a sleeper cab or not has absolutely no correlation to their tech skills and a solid 50% of them struggle to do basic things on their smartphone.

In fairness to the comment you're replying to, I've worked with a shit ton of truckers, and while you're right that a lot of them are pretty tech illiterate (and that's coming from me, who's barely tech literate enough to know Lemmy exists) they're pretty good at that whole "necessity is the mother of invention" type of know how, where they manage to get a full home style electric range or some shit in their sleeper cab. Lmao

I've seen sleepers decked out with some wild shit, terrifyingly wired up with, like, cut up extension cords and chewing gum. ... I've also done a lot of that myself when I was working security and spent 8-16 hours a days sitting in my car in a parking lot, which is how I met most of those truckers.

They don't own the truck. Chewing gum won't vibrate loose; It can be uninstalled quickly for owner inspection and maintenance; It's AC low amp with a fuse: a reasonably safe and cheap hack job.

The rare owner-operators have the authority and income to make wiser long term choices.

Hey man, let me make sweeping statements and generalizations about a group, can't go wrong with that.

You never spoke to an average truck driver, did you?

7

That is pretty unfair. I've met plenty who have good IT skills. Its the short run rock haulers who are stupid.

4

I love the idea of the trucker using a projector for, like, hardcore, niche fetish porn, and having the audio routed through earbuds. For privacy. Lmao

Good on him, driving trucks can be exhausting as fuck from what I imagine
