Met my future dog yesterday.

Long story, but the owner has breast cancer and needed to find a forever home for a staffy (my dream dog).

Spent about 2 hours with him yesterday making sure he'd be happy with me as his human. He's very shy but we both fell in love.

Meet Adam the new love of my life 😍

LOOK AT THE LITTLE BABY!

My favourite thing is naming pets with human names. Like my cats are Bob and Rosa (Bob was named after Silent Bob but I revoke it and he's named after Bob the Drag Queen -- he was named by my ex-stepdad. Rosa is named after Rosa Diaz from Brooklyn 99). Can't wait to name a pet Greg.

4
aussie.zone

I can't wait to confuse people at work when I complain about him taking a shit on the rug

4

Awww the doggo!

I hope you have lots of fun times together.

Looks so cute sleeping like that.

Eeeeee!!!!! I accidentally found the cat's cuddle spot!!! 😻😻😻 it's much closer to the TV than I would normally sit but I decided to sit there while petting her and she CRAWLED ONTO MY LAP. I nearly died. I didn't have my phone but when she got up for a bit I grabbed it and sat back down and here she is purring up an absolute storm. She hasn't cuddled at all the whole 2.5 weeks I've been here - I'll sit here all day long to feel her purring contentedly against me1. Oh please kitty cat don't let this be a one time thing. We can chill any time. Any time at all. <3

::: spoiler prrrrrrrrrr :::

21

Teddy is adrift without the baby boy that usually lives in this house... (who probably just drools all over him at this stage tbh)

4

I could die happy right now, but then I might not get to experience this again tomorrow so no dying for me today.

3
aussie.zone

Aww so satisfying when they do this! The elation of being chosen! And a beautiful kitty 😍

3

Cats are so good at making feel like a piece of useless garbage but they also make you feel so special and divine when they choose to lavish their love upon you. No, I am not a battered cat slave, don't send help...

5

She's not at that stage yet. She prefers to stay mostly adjacent. I went to go feed her (I'm guessing this cuddliness was all a ruse...!) and now she's back to ignoring me from the other side of the house. But if I can be cat trapped by her before I head back home that would be an accomplishment indeed.

2
aussie.zone

Yum. I think I'm going to go and start my own dinner now, you made me hungry.

5
aussie.zone

Hey just so you know, the image description for vision impaired users was actually already in the alt text of the photo in that comment (which you put in the square brackets when you use markup). That's how image descriptions are meant to work. If you hover over the photo on desktop or long press to open the image in another tab on a mobile browser you'll see the description.

Just fyi about accessible tech if you're going to keep wanting to label peoples photos.

4
aussie.zone

Ok well I use the safari version of Aussie.zone on my phone only, to me it just looks like it’s just the photo of your cat with nothing else. I tried long pressing and it didn’t do anything. Whatever the case, I must be the only person who didn’t realise this and apologise for adding the ID and I promise never to add an ID to any future image from anyone :) thanks for letting me know

2
aussie.zone

Ok so I looked into this and amazingly enough the only way it seems that you can access the alt text on Safari iPhone is to actually turn on VoiceOver in Settings>Accessibility - which most vision impaired users (those would need alt text at least) would use anyway in order to navigate the OS, but sucks if you're testing. When VoiceOver is activated, and my comment is read out (you can try it by selecting it with the image in Safari), VoiceOver does indeed read the alt text.

You won't have the same issue with Chrome on iPhone, you can long press and see the alt text.

Awesome! 💯 So glad to hear it's all happening for you after your hospital trip and all that stuff last week.

4

Glad to hear! Your list of little things is not so little, it must feel great to be entering a new stage of life where you are getting more autonomy.

3
aussie.zone

I trusted you, Goddess. I could have hung up my laundry indoors last night, but I remembered your comment saying today was going to be 18 degrees. So I waited and hung out my stuff on the line this mroning and it dried perfectly throughout the day. So - thanks! I'm glad I held off instead of having clothes cram up my house. Cheers!

I downvote when someone says they don't put butter on toast.

I exist.. we exist.

9

Flashback to a concert at Festival Hall when Wayne started the show by rolling out on top on the crowd in one of those inflatable mouse ball things, then proceeded to sing the first 3 or 4 songs whilst being rolled around on-top of the crowd by the crowd ...

4

I butter my toast but not if it's peanut butter. Then it's peanut butter only.

1
aussie.zone

I was a bit confused about how you knew, my page just shows a cumulative total. Then I looked at it in the Jerboa app and it shows there, so I guess it just depends on the interface.

I have downvoted random things due to poor scrolling techniques, and it wouldn't surprise me if Miss Meow has managed to cast a few votes with a stray tail swipe or face rub too.

5

I can see the percentage through wefwef.

Says 29 upvotes and lists a 97% with a smiley face.

I assume that’s the percentage of people who upvoted.

3
aussie.zone

Oh that interesting. I’m not using an app right now just on web browser. I thought that was something everyone could see.

3

I've just moved to my phone and it shows here, it's just the tablet showing the combined total for some reason. Odd.

1
aussie.zone

There's one or more serial downvoters here, lurking. They hide away, and express their displeasure at our community the only way they know how.

Or it was a fat-finger that went off-course lol

5
aussie.zone

I have accidentally dowmvored my own comments before! Fat fingets unite indeef

4
aussie.zone

Could be a mistake or could be someone gets their kicks from it. But eh, DT could be downvoted to minus a million but still I’d visit here to enjoy the company.

5

It happens consistently with the daily thread itself as I usually see the percentage always being less than 100%

2
aussie.zone

Probably the same person who didn't appreciate my morning coffee and poo announcement yesterday. Maybe they do neither. Lol

4

Same people who downvoted the Reddit one?

You never noted it fluctuates between. -5 and +5 all day long?

I've been invited to fill in a survey on my experiences as a student. The email says I am from a "unique group of students". I think this might be a polite way of saying "you're really old for a student".

11
aussie.zone

I am amused by the phrase 'unique group'. If unique, then by definition not a group. If they meant 'small group' why didn't they say so. Fancy word syndrome strikes again.
I have a Melb Uni tshirt with 'minimise sesquipedalian circumlocutions' written across the front. I cherish it.

10
aussie.zone

'minimise sesquipedalian circumlocutions'

I want one. A quick google search revealed that I can buy many tshirts with just the word sesquipedalian on it in a variety of fonts but not that tshirt :( can you still get them or no?

3

It was from the early 2000s. Doubt if MelbUni has them anymore. I got it from their shop on campus, even though I wasn't a student.

Blue cheese. Cheese in general. More cheese than you think is reasonable, and then a bit more after that

6
Duenanreply
aussie.zone

Sweet corn kernels were always my favourite in a tuna mornay if you weren’t already using it.

Maybe peas?

3

Water chestnuts for crunch. Just don't chop them until they resemble fingernail parings, which can lead to domestic disagreements. Ask me how I know.

2
aussie.zone

Ok, lunch is packed. Camera battery charged. I'm ready to head off for the day. Be good while I'm away, and keep your finger's crossed that the rain holds off long enough this afternoon that I don't come home a soggy Raven.

Just drove back into the city from Ballarat and yep, absolutely pishing down coming in from about Brooklyn. The Westgate Fwy was a swimming pool.

The clouds have rolled in over Thornbury. The soft undersides of the clouds are beginning show the warm glow of approaching sunset. Well, either that or Footscray's on fire, and I'm sure someone would have mentioned it if that was the case.

8

e: ....and it's all over.

5

And as you are commenting about it, therefore you are in a position to do so, so Footscray is NOT on fire. This is reassuring.

5

This is all because we got a bullshit summer last summer.

Doing the springers for dins.

Wrapped in lettuce w/ some sweet chilli dipping.

I was a bit wasted making them and it was very late so we're rolling the dice.

Day 4 and it's a rest day, so I just did my tummy exercises. Now Mr Peeler is up I can put on some washing. The Miniest Peeler this morning said, "you're going to have to get new clothes soon Mum." 7

My skin has been a lot drier this winter so I bought this product called Glory Oil by Eco Tan. Holy crap. It basically instantly fixed my skin and I have never looked so smooth and glowy in my life! 🥰

I really neglected my self care and appearance while pregnant last year because I was sooo sick. I couldn’t even stand to shower for more than a few times a week. Just miserable. But now at nine months post partum I am finally finding the time/energy/willpower to do morning AND night skincare, regular hair washing and styling, a bit of exercise, and I’m going to try and cut down on my insane sugar consumption (craved it so bad when I first started breastfeeding, now it’s just a bad habit). Oh and I need to cut down on screen time because it’s baaaaaad 🙈

7

Sort of funny but ever since the housemates cat came home from the vet my cat is not happy with him, 9yrs doesn't matter when you're gone for a few days. Also my cat is doing this thing where he approaches housemates cat and just sort of hisses in his face and walks away, and it's so stupid and funny.

Digital or not, it still involves a projector that can fail.

Yes, good point. I was imagining the actual physical film failing rather than the projector system.

Kind of hoping for climate change to result in what happened in The Day After Tomorrow. Can I be stuck in a flooded, frozen city, in a library, and get naked with a hottie to keep warm? I'm looking forward to re-enacting that hot af scene tbh

4

Sorted out the delivery. Thankfully this time when I said no to the chat service I got a human. A few items were out of stock which was a pain.

Still been trying at digital because pencils and paper require me to sit up for too long. It’s frustrating though. While I picked the controls up quickly and have been managing to ‘paint’, sketching smoothly or with any precision is near impossible and kind of forcing me to relearn bad habits (pressing too hard just so the stylus will register, and chicken scratching).

It’s probably the limitations of the basic program and small equipment (it’s an on the go visual note taker for phones with fewer features than the standard version) plus my posture. But it’s really hard not to take poor results personally.

Edit: I went into the settings of the pencil and turned ‘streamlining’ up to 100 which helped a lot. Much closer to a real pencil. But yeah. That control has to be manually trained for a real pencil so it feels like a skill issue :(

6

Spewing that I’m not in great physical condition now and can’t really garden. Seed libraries are around if anyone wants to try it.

Also I’m not sure of the heavy metal in the soil (the tested map sites on either side vary) so I’d have to do raised beds which don’t move house well. And if I went outside the furry baby would either be crying inside or follow me out and take the chance to abscond. Melbcat’s a fully indoor kitty now.

I know that leafy veg have shallow roots and require less light so maybe that’s a go, window box inside. Maybe more cat grass. Paris Market carrots are also very short and round for containers, I think root veg also need less light than fruiting plants. But I have to fork out more for either self watering pots or watering spikes for bottles because I’m not going to remember.

It all adds up at Bunnings 💸 But I’m just trying to think of something constructive but not overwhelming while I feel like shit

reddit has turned in to a steaming pile of crap. or maybe it was always like that. thankful we moved away for our special kind of banter. A gig is a job, a kind of horse cart but I'd never heard of being a sticky beak slang term, learn something every day. I'll never quite understand why people bother to waste time being jerks online.

7

'Initial public offering'. Just means they're going from a private company to a public one where you can buy shares. Also means it'll probably go to (further) shit. heh.

4

Reddit was better when it was just the tech heads using it.

The normies ruined it.

2
aussie.zone

People enjoy shitting on others to make themselves feel superior. It's gross. I have not heard of 'gig' in that context, but I didn't grow up in every single state, city, and town in Aus simultaneously. OP is just trying to the slang-etymology for that usage, doesn't mean they're wrong. Netizens can be so cuntish.

6
aussie.zone

What's wrong with saying nah mate. I've never heard of it instead of nah you're wrong?

4

I was sufficiently moved by the confidently incorrect assertions of some of the respondents to this post to add my own contribution. Yes, I know people that use the word "gig" in this manner, and u/Positive_Complaint had to dust off her 3rd party app and add her 5c!

I was actually a bit relieved it was cancelled, as I was pretty tired from walking so far. The morning was absolutely beautiful for it, lovely and sunny without being too hot for walking. Now I just need to spend some time getting my photos off the camera.

5
Seagoon_reply
aussie.zone

I think burrito means little donkey , so they are meant to be little 🤷‍♀️

6

I looked it up in the britannica

Lumpy and cylindrical, the burrito takes its name, according to one theory, from the bedroll that Mexican miners and travelers would drape across the saddle of a donkey, or burro in Spanish. Another possible origin suggests that street vendors sold burritos from baskets attached sidesaddle to their burros, the conveyance transferring its name to the thing conveyed.

2

Product recommendation: image: Bull's-eye Carolina Reaper and Black Garlic hot sauce. It's the hottest sauce I've ever bought from a non-specialty shop. It's also insanely tasty, and a little goes a long way. Available at Woolies for $4.75. side note: I do not recommend their less spicy bourbon infused one - not very tasty.

5

I have outdoor garden lighting that stopped working. I have narrowed it down to the transformer. Ordered one online and that was a no-go. Tried Middys. They were no help. Maybe Beacon can hook me up today. I might have to build my own.

On another note, I've never seen this doctor before and they asked in Straight or gay?? I answered without thinking and it wasn't until I left that I questioned the necessity of that question. Lol.
