I tried it in a VM. It's very quirky. This post actually just triggered me to look around for Open Solaris.
I feel like that would be a great contender as an alternative OS since more software runs on it.
OpenSolaris was insanely wonderful. I still have a collection of original, from Sun Microsystems, DVDs and CDs for Solaris, OpenSolaris and Solaris Express.

Any idea when the R5 is out? It is listed as 95% ready.
No idea, it will be out when it's out. Meanwhile, you can keep using the R4 and updating it.
