Mattress salespeople are absolutely insane.

Kept feeling like I was a hot chip surrounded by seagulls.

I'm amazed we made it out of Nunawading alive

21
aussie.zone

Did you make out alive with a mattress, or was mission unsuccessful?

6
aussie.zone

We're really just dipping our toes in the water to see what we like.

If they'd been a bit more chill we would have stuck around and bought something.

But each area felt too staked out. We had 6 different salespeople try to get us at Snooze.

Massive turnoff. Just wanted to get out.

6
aussie.zone

Ick. That's a large part of why I ended up with a mattress-in-a-box instead, I really didn't want to deal with all that. And I've been pretty happy with it - plus they are sending me a new mattress topper which the Koala matresess all come with now (but didn't when I bought mine) so it might even get better when that arrives!

5
aussie.zone

I've tried floating the idea to Mr Smeg before but he's very insistent on try before buy.

So I feel there will be more pushy salespeople to deal with in my immediate future.

Might try the FTG store next time

2
aussie.zone

I liked that you could try out the mattresses and return them if you didn't like them for a full refund - most allowed around three months. Just lying on them in store isn't the same as actually sleeping on them for a full night. I figured worst case scenario I didn't like any of them and just bought myself some time to make a final decision. But I was happy with the first one.

3

I love the concept but Mr Smeg is a NO person by default.

For the same reason I wasn't able to convince him on certain couches only available online that were the perfect fit for our tiny loungeroom.

If it's not in a physical store it doesn't exist to him.

3
aussie.zone

You should have laid down on the mattress and when they ask "Can I help you with anything?" you reply "A cup of tea would be great thanks".

Oooh, sauna.
One of the things I want to get for the new place if I possibly can is one of those infrared saunas.

5

Ooh sauna! I'm trying to use the sauna at my gym more and more. It feels good but I get antsy very quickly. Probably should take my headphones in.

5

Only take your headphones in if it's infra red. The dry sauna will absolutely cook your headphones.

Takes a bit of getting used to with building up how long you can stay in it. The one I use is super intense. About 80-90 degrees.

I can handle half an hour normally but if they keep splashing the rocks I start fading around the 20 minute mark 🥵

I'll attempt (half heartedly) to do some housework I didn't do yesterday. The mini peelers need their school uniforms washed so that's first cab off the rank. Then I'll produce some kind of chicken dish, maybe my ginger plum sauce chicken.

7

I need to get some housework done today, it's so never ending! What time should we all be over for chicken?!

8

Cats are hounding me while I try and do the housework. Its cute but the kitten plays with everything but his toys when he wants me to play. Vaccuum scares the shit out of them, so that's my hack. They'll leave me alone if I leave it running while doing other chores. Already done an aa meeting. Have loads of laundry to put away, dishes to do... domestic stuff. later go for a walk. My body is kinda fucked up and I now walk with a limp for some reason.

5

Bf's cat has been super demanding this morning, so I've been walking around with his laser pointer to play with him, but now he's trying to drink my Berocca. Good call on the vacuum, good luck with getting your other domestic stuff done!

I did my research last night for where I'd go for breakfast in Bright, walked up to it in the chilled morning drizzle eager for some (reviewer described) fluffy yellow eggs and coffee only to find, to my horror, that a sign on the door said "We are closed for annual leave until June 26, sorry we missed you"

I was so disappointed I left town immediately. I drove without a specific destination, in search of a place of fluffy yellow eggs and delicious coffee.

I find myself now in Wangaratta, sat inside a cafe I spotted as I drove through the city centre. Eggs ordered, sipping my coffee and listening to my audiobook through my headphones. The sun is shining.

Same. Too bad the option isn’t available in cinemas. They should have sessions where the movie has subtitles throughout the whole movie

6

How good would it be to be able to understand the whole damn movie. Like it’s 21 century and yet when they have characters speaking in another language often times instead of translating in English so we know what’s been said it show [speaking in insert that countries’ dialogue] so you’re just sitting there like, wtf did they say though. Ok so it’s that countries language but what’s the conversation if you don’t know that language. Like what is that?!?! How do they get away with doing that so often?!?!

I have solutions for this depending on which device I'm using.

If I'm watching my TV, my soundbar has a Voice button which has 3 levels which it will boost the center channel to help with it, or I can connect my bluetooth headphones and they handle it better.

If I'm watching on my PC, I use some free software called FxSound which is an equalizer for Windows. Even just installing it and using the General profile is a noticeable improvement over the default balances but it also has sound profiles for Movies, TV, Transcription, Music, Voice, Volume Boost, Gaming, Classic Processing, Light Processing, Bass Boost and Streaming Video. I recommend installing FxSound for all Windows users, I have it on all of my computers.

If for some reason I'm using my phone, or using my phone to Bluetooth to my headphones or to my car stereo I use an equalizer on that (Android) called REEQ which has preset profiles or you can make custom ones. That app has definitely increased the quality of the audio from and streamed from my phone.

6

It’s so annoying. But why is it so? Never used to be a problem with regular tv, or dvds, is it a feature of streaming technology, or is it just currently fashionable to make voices indiscernible? I always have to watch with subtitles on.

I have just discovered there is a reference for all the emojis. https://emojipedia.org/

It has an official list of what they actually represent (which is what is read out when using text to voice software) and shows you what they actually look like on different platforms. You can paste an emoji into the search bar to look up what it means. Very handy if you are like me and spend way too much time wondering if that little face is actually smiling or grimacing.

12

I realised yesterday when the blackbird in my name showed as a red bird and a black square on my PC just how different they can display too. And all the little faces are so small, there are quite a few I can't tell what they are supposed to be.

You make an interesting point. I was reading Lemmy documentation and some GitHub discussion regarding gamification. I did like the little fun things/quirks of Rdt, but can also understand the reasoning for why/why not.

I am honestly just impressed that members of the DT have put effort in to keep going. So just seeing everyone’s posts for the time being is enough for me. Funny how when it closed the first time, I had things that I was like, I’ll do my little brain dump/share to DT, and then realised I couldn’t and it was admittedly silly and sad at the same time.

Wait so the reddit CEO is now going after mods? My dude, you can disagree with them all you like, but don’t piss off the folks who keep your site from becoming bloody Twitter when they do it for free! Oh and he praised Elon…. Whilst Twitter are getting evicted from one of their offices for not paying rent.

Get comfortable gang! Looks like we’re not going home any time soon. And even if it were, suspect it’d be temporary!

9
aussie.zone

That's the thing that gets me: they had mods working for free, people contributing content for free.. they rammed ads down people's throats to the tune of about $500 million in the past year and he goes after 3rd party app devs, some of whom were students (who also made their apps for free). I get it, people like to make money but JFC!

7
aussie.zone

I understand that if something is free, you're the product. Of course, you're still the product when you're paying for content. But in general, I get the idea. But why the fuck would you piss where you eat? Your content is created by and large from people. Whether it's original content or news articles, or whatever.

2

Users are both the product, but they are still also the consumer. It is an unstated contract that Reddit are breaking. As users we provide content that Reddit can use, and they return a part of the money they make from it to us in the form of the service they provide. Done right both sides benefit, but I think Reddit right now want to keep all the benefits they get from the content without returning a reasonable amount in the term of service provision.

3

Not only is he getting evicted, but he's getting fucking sued! Like my guy, why are you praising a man for cuts when he's getting evicted and SUED!

Yeah. They're really quite handy.

Wonder when Lemmy is going to implement an API, or whether that's another thing to go on the big pile of "soon" features.

Honestly, I thought most of the old mods moved over here and created the whole community in the first place.

2

It is possible to do automatic posts and things now, but it requires programming knowledge that makes it a bit hard. On Reddit people had developed tools (automoderator) to make it easier, and I'm sure there are people working on that for Lemmy too.

I'm slowly getting my head around the basics of what applications are needed to create some automated tools, but I'm coming from a very low starting point as far as programming knowledge goes so I'm not sure how long before I can actually do anything.

I've got no idea about the old mods - they always seemed like unknowable mythical creatures, my brain struggles to believe they even exist outside of Reddit🤣

7
aussie.zone

I'm not sure what your experience was, but I'm finding it frustrating in certain particular ways. I feel like it's getting worse in that every time I take the kids out I'm unfortunate enough to encounter someone absolutely off their heads. The kids look to me for an explanation. Sometimes it's mentally ill people having a bit of a tough time, and some understanding/sympathy is called for. Sometimes it's a case of, "and that's why you don't do drugs, kids!" But sometimes people are just jerks, and it's hard to explain.

4

I think the time of day / on the w/e is a huge factor. In the middle of the day I'd say it's likely at its worst depending on route.

Usually they're crawling 6 to 12 months. Around 9 to 12 months they're pulling themselves up using furniture to help them stand up and from there they try a few steps. Some kids don't walk until they're 18 months old. It depends on how motivated they are. My son was highly motivated to get around and was walking before 12 months, but my daughter took longer.

Watching a new to me movie everyday, not just lotr & hobbit 😏

Today was Good Will Hunting. I had been putting off watching this for decades because ... "reasons"

Yes, it hit as hard as I thought it would. But I'm older now and can see that movie was written by kids, genius kids but kids. 😉

It's true, easy work is relaxing, it leaves the mind free.

Luck is more important than most people know.

Choices in life aren't usually dichotomous, you don't have to choose between a person/people and opportunity. If you can, choose both.

Still shits me that society thinks smart people have a duty to self actualise and serve society. If there is duty the duty goes both ways. You want what brains can give, then give brains some support and respect their freedom of choice.

This is true. Find your people.

6

I recently read "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell, which looked at what leads people to make extraordinary achievements. Basically, genius is not enough, there is also a lot of luck and social support required. I highly recommend it, and it definitely supports what you are saying here.

3
aussie.zone

I agree on the pacing, I'm on ep three and there's a bit of a drop.

Maybe it's because I watch lots of foreign language stuff and I used to listen to accents all day everyday for work so it doesn't bother me at all. Obviously I hear her jumping around but it does wreck my immersion or anything.

On the Melbourne page I was able to sort by new posts and find the one Raven posted here and click on the thread. I can see that it exists and see that there are 40 comments but I can’t see any of them. Not even sure if posting will work.

When I try to change the sort order of the Melbourne page or view the posts, I can only see the stuff made by mods. Last time it fixed itself the next day but idk 🤷‍♀️

Oh it worked. So odd. I seem to have it working now but I don’t know how. I fiddled with the settings, changing them from the default to something different and then changing them back and that seemed to work. Still not working on Mlem at all though.

Maybe something to do with Mlem being beta? I’m not using Mlem, I’m pretty iffy about installing beta stuff on my phone. I just use the browser on my phone.

Nah it was/is doing it in not just Mlem but every web browser on every device I own. So it’s some glitch with my account specifically. Mlem has completely shit the bed for me and just errors out every time I try to use it, so I’ve deleted it for now. I’ll try again when it’s out of beta

Do we just go with this one now? Please don’t make me retype my manifesto against social media haha

Spose so. I said I'd do it, but procrastinata beat me to it. Let's run two and see what happens? Could be fun. Didn't work out how to pin it to the top though. Any hints?

"procrastinata beat me to it"

You can't write this kind of comedy

Pinning is a mod’s ability. We can create a thread but cannot pin. So it’s just a wait. They’re pretty quick

Any hot tips on how to put a smoke alarm back after changing batteries? The Bunnings lady makes it look like child's play but the top came right off (rather than being attached via a flat cord) and I'm struggling to align the top back to the body and slot it back in :(

Cook the base in a frypan until sticky then cartoon pancake flip it onto the ceiling.

they are not symmetrical. Match the hole with the protruding bit..

5

Lol yeah I feel like they didn't really think about this when designing these because unless the whole thing is transparent you can't really see and try to align the bits that fit

Not much help, but my approach is to stand awkwardly on a chair and just mash it at the roof part until it catches.

My solution was to buy one of those smoke alarms with a built in battery that lasts 10 years.

This is not helpful information in anyway though.

I'm just too short to have to deal with changing batteries every year (or reach the top shelf at a supermarket) so I feel your pain

4

Lol even if you have a ladder to reach the design is just too stupid so I agree with built in batteries

Here is a good one.

At the p's place helping them get a few things ready for our trip to bro's wedding in JK. To say things get tense is an understatement before trips. Been a while seens I've been with them but same ol..

Old man bought some 'tiles' the find stuff airtag type things for their luggage. I set them up all good to go. Work great.

I leave them on the table next to the passports and he freaks out saying I need to put them in an envelope so they can find them before we leave...

I'm an original pearl jam fan. Was in the first wave over the fence in 95. Burnt into my memory that night. I remember Eddie said something like, there's a whole bunch of extra people in here now, everybody be cool and we'll keep playing........ everyone was cool and they kept playing, and it was amazing.

I'm so unbelievably envious, that is awesome. I've seen them every time they've been to Perth since 1996, except when the came with BDO most recently. Come to think of it, they're well passed due for another tour here...

But I did see Soundgarden at BDO `97... acoustic encore from Chris was... amazing.

I missed seeing him. I had tickets but couldn't go.

Edit. I saw EV a few years ago on his solo tour. His support was Glen Hansard. I fucking love Glen Hansard and seeing them perform together was incredible. You should check out their (sort of) collaboration soundtrack album - Flag Day

Looks like we have 2 DT for todays date. I asked if someone was going to take over and Thornbury witch offered. So now we have 2 separate ones?

4

G'day again DT peeps! So, the steam "summer" sales are coming up at the end of the month (AKA the time I can spend a shitton of money on games and not feel bad). My Steam library feels a little lacking, does anyone have any suggestions? My only thing is I'm not big into shooters or survival type games. But I'd love some reccos!

3

Noita doesn't look too bad. Not 100% sure I'll enjoy it, but it does look kinda fun. Might grab it one day. The graphics in Binding of Isaac look cool, but not sure it's my sort of game. FTL looks like a great game, and I reckon I'll grab it, but it also looks like the kind of game I won't have the brain cells to "win", but will enjoy nonetheless. OW looks interesting, but I'm not sure I get the objective from a flick through on the steam listing/the trailer?

Lots of reccos there! Thank you!

I personally really like the True Fear Games, so far there’s two out of three released. The last has been held up by funding and development issues. The games are hidden object type games but with an actually good jump scare side to them. Very atmospherically creepy

Have you played Unpacking yet? It's an Australian-made game that'll take you about 4 - 5 hours to complete. It's been my favourite casual game for the past few years. Very sweet little game.

I'll second the recommendation for Divinity Original Sin 2, and I'll add to that the amazing Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (fun mechanics & story! good lgbtq rep!), and the upcoming Baldurs Gate 3 (which has its full release in August). Rimworld is also an absolutely mad game that you can do just about anything in. Hit MMO Final Fantasy XIV has a steam version, but be warned - it has the best story I've ever played through in entirety, it's very long, and it's very, very, good. If you have an addictive personality, maybe handle that recommendation with care.

Have you played any of the Dragon Age games? They're all fantastic. Inquisition usually goes on sale for like $15.

Dorfromantik is another really chill casual game I like. You place hexes good. Yep.

I got quoted 520 to 580$ to do a pink ombre on virgin hair (pretty short, just below chin length) and I know they use Olaplex etc, but that feels excessive? Am I wrong?

2

There is, but contextually it’s a much more positive symbol. The Nazis ruined it, as they ruined everything they touched

12

Yes but it was originally a religious symbol used in India among other places that the Nazis appropriated.

7

OK, I'm a dumdum, but doesn't the Nazi Swastika spin widdershins and the Hindu symbol spin dexter? Or doesn't the direction matter for the Hindu symbol? I do note that the Nazi symbol DOES spin widdershins/sinister/anticlockwise.
