Old man changed the aircon remote language to polish somehow. So, had a crash 2min course in polish and now I'm fluent and can fix all your accidental language changes from polish to english. But seriously, that is a severely difficult language.

16

Sounds like when I bought a phone from overseas and it was set with Chinese as the default. That was a fun experience.

7

I've had a few Polish friends over time and when I have a go at saying things, they all say I speak Polish like a Russian. They've not said it unkindly, but..

Not hungry this morning. Have made a large jug of peppermint tea which is currently cooling on the countertop prior to being put in fridge. Some essential shopping only this morning, then I'm going to sleep the day away. Punctuated by peppermint tea over ice. Cool change is due fairly late tonight so not looking forward to this afternoon.

12

Not hungry here either. Just going to get a blood test done, pop over to IKEA, then hunker down and snooze for the rest of the day aside from doing loads of laundry then taking them to the laundromat dryer (unbelievable in this heat - but no outdoor drying areas here). Maybe assemble my bed frame. I need a day of solid rest, today's probably the best day for it.

5

Today is an inside day. Going out for some drinks when it cools down, but otherwise, just going to chill/zonk out ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Paws out means "I'm not moving" lol

12

Walking in the drizzle listening to music is one of my favourite activities. Fuck yeah.

Edit: Tonight was a good night. Have been feeling extra isolated lately. Saw some friends and just had dinner and chatted. Grateful they came to hang out.

Can't wait to move closer to civilisation.

11
aussie.zone

Not so bad outside as it's overcast rather than skin-peelingly burning hot. Wait for blood test took an hour but at least it was air conditioned inside so I caught up on my crosswords. Grabbed some Argentinean empanadas for lunch on a whim (yum!!!), and a late coffee... Apt has stayed pretty nice and cool so far. I've been running the extractor fan in the bathroom which I think is kinda sorta helping to suck cool air in from the lounge via the bedroom?

Cringing a bit at how much drying I'll need to do at the laundromat. I've put the towels to air dry a bit in the bathroom until I'm ready to go so there's less paid drying involved. So dumb to have to use a dryer on a day like today. I won't be here long enough to warrant buying a dryer for the unit, either... once I've opened up more space here I'll look into some strategic clothes horse positions for drying work clothes and the like.

I will say there is something about living within walking distance to SO much stuff and activity (but not having to hear most of it at home). It's like being on holiday in a downtown airbnb.

What you're describing sounds like heaven to me at the moment.

I cannot wait to leave this area and side of town. It was a giant waste of time anyway.

5

I can definitely appreciate how you feel, it's how I felt when I first came to Aus and the first few years were all in deep suburbia where i couldn't fathom the way of life. I can kind of see why Richmond rentals attract a premium compared to say the equivalent in Hawthorn, simply for the vibrancy and density. Still overpriced IMO and no longer my thing but I can try and enjoy it while I'm here (while trying not to spend too much... none of this fun is for free)

Great. Thatโ€™s all I need.

I think the split system using AC is leaking into the roof and wet spots and stuff have appeared.

Only noticed it today.

No proof that it the AC but I canโ€™t think of any recent rain that could have caused it.

Dammit :(

10

Iโ€™ll have to.

Itโ€™s appeared in strange spots but Iโ€™m not sure how the piping was down and is actually causing the wet spots

5

Just trying not to stress about it but I guess I am and itโ€™s coming out in really bad ways right now

I have shouted at people standing very close behind me at atm and registers. ( this is not like me but when people wont listen to soft words said 5 times I will shout ) Even when you tell them they just don't understand personal space.

8

I may have honed my ability to mimic very wet and juicy fart noises with my mouth for such situations.

Far too hot.

There is also about a 50% chance that the air conditioning at work will end up being too cold at some point today, so I have brought in my cardigan.

8

I've got the opposite problem of working in a large non air-conditioned factory kitchen. It gets stinkingly oppressive "I can't do this anymore" hot. Both extremes of temperature suck. My sinuses play up with too-cold aircon. But I'm thinking of bringing in one of those misting fan cooler things that you put iced water in the top of. I'll wear it lol.

Just got through the first season of Happy Valley. For all the typical story beats, dang is this well acted and the dialogue tightly written... Sarah Lancashire is amazing. And I absolutely want to murder Tommy Lee Royce.

Also strikes me how much technology had changed in ten years. None of the kids are glued to mobile devices...

E: that pizza absolutely hit the spot too, perfectly greasy and salty and spiced and faux-meaty. I'm ready for bed soon I think.

To make up for not feeling hungry this morning I now have a horrific craving for greasy sausages. I wonder if the Coles nearby has the brand of vegan snags I like. But after this morning's jaunt and then the boiling hot laundromat journey I'm not going out again. Ikea and the lot can be left to tomorrow.

...although, despite my recent extravagance^, I think I'll go for that pizza dinner. They do a mock beef Mexican, i have to try it.

Gonna have to work extra hard over the next few weeks to make up for some of this.

I finished The House on the Borderlands yesterday. It was ok. Not as engrossing as The Night Lands but still very imaginative and having all the elements of a gothic novel.

I've read the Poe short stories just a few years back in a lovely edition called Steampunk Poe, so I might skip them for now.

Gormenghast? It's been quite a while since I've read the trilogy, I find the characters and the world engrossing. ๐Ÿ™‚ Greatly recommend. I think I'll do this, then Poe novels and some HP Lovecraft. These are all rereads of course, oh god I did so much reading in my 20s and 30s,

I already had some cardboard Iโ€™d sealed with water based gloss medium, intended for painting on. And a bunch of brushes. So I picked the largest flat brush and painted a thin layer of dark yellow. When thatโ€™s dry Iโ€™ll do another and then a few layers of light yellow.

It bugs me to be using up my paints (especially one colour) but having a practical need did lead to actually using it.

4
aussie.zone

I knew cardboard would be a terrible canvas (hence attempts at sealing) and only for early practice but wow. Even with the layer of medium underneath it basically drank the paint. Which I knew it would but not to this degree.

::: spoiler Paint rambles

Despite trying to coat thinly and smoothly it was impossible to avoid streaking and brush marks because the acrylic Anko paint actually started drying while I was still working and I had to use much more of it at once to spread it.

What I should have done was mix in some of the clear medium so it wouldnโ€™t dry so fast. It would have been less pigmented which is bad because it took thick layers to even show up, but it wouldnโ€™t have looked so rough. Upside is I wonโ€™t mind that this is disposable. But it took most of both my tubes of yellow. I should have just ordered poster paint. :::

ย

Iโ€™ve been trying not to feed them as much but one of the magpies approached me when I went out to rinse my brush under an outside tap. Flew right up close and looked at me. It looked like a female maybe. Broken top beak. I nipped inside to grab some of Melbcatโ€™s pet jerky and threw the magpie some crumbled pieces.

Iโ€™m wondering if Iโ€™ve done a bad and made the magpies too dependent and trusting of humans. Also worried about whether this bird can eat properly. But Iโ€™m not going to be able to catch it for treatment.

fast drying happens on these too hot days

for spreading maybe use a piece of plastic or card , not a brush which is too slow ( I have been reading many books on painting lately , I painted the furniture and am doing watercolours too )
