The final result was randomly determined first then the animation is built based on that random result. So technically, it’s rigged. Still random but rigged.

Edit. I was wrong is Super Mario World (GameBoy) that does that.

I don't think that's true. I got pretty good at this as a kid and was able to hit the mark much more often than random. The trick was pressing the button a bit earlier than center.

You’re right I got confused with Super Mario Land (GameBoy) which is rigged.

It’s pretty easy to do really, just time the presses right. The first one sets the puzzle, and you just make sure the others match.
