Threads joins X in blocking posts to apparently leaked documents about JD Vance

Threads is following X's lead, blocking links to purportedly leaked documents about vice presidential candidate JD Vance.

Meta says the links could come from hacked or leaked sources — and it's blocking them because of the potential connection. The FBI and other intelligence agencies last month warned that Iran-backed hackers had sought to access information from the Trump campaign.

Purportedly hacked documents have been floating around various media outlets ever since, and while the existence of these documents has been reported, almost all outlets have refused to publish the details due to the potentially illicit way they were obtained.

Interesting how documents from democratic campaigns are fair game. Even dick pics of the president's son are fair game. But when it comes to Republicans Suddenly It's all off limits. Strange.

I believe the former is the reason for the policy affecting the latter.

In a rational world? Perhaps. But if this were a rational world and that were actually the reason. They would have done it after the Clinton campaign leaked documents. Or 30 times before that. So I highly suspect that isn't the case. It's that it's impacting the people they want to win personally. Therefore it must be censored. And for all the many faults Democrats have. They're not being hypocritical on this point at least. The Biden campaign was contacted with this information previously but didn't publish it or run with it. Not like any Republican or specifically Trump officials would have.

Similarly in 2000, Gore campaign reported a leak from the Bush campaign to the FBI.

15

They have a rule in the House specifically to prevent anyone out talking disparagingly about the Cheeto Mussolini. Well former Presidents I believe, but the point stands.

This is part of a whole reckoning over the banning of the Hunter Biden laptop during October of 2024, which all these platforms took part in.

In short, you are either misremembering or purposefully spreading misinformation.

They didn't ban it. They were the ones spreading it. Literally I can give you page after page after page of evidence. Twitter and Facebook were the main vectors it spread through unabated. The Biden Administration rightfully asking for them not to make exception to their revenge porn rules. To no avail was not the same thing.

Sorry buddy, the entirety of the historical record disagrees with your flawed memory of events.

-32

It doesn't at all. It was a nothing Burger the whole time. And if you were ignorant enough to believe the Twitter files. Well that's on you.

during October of 2024, which all these platforms took part in

Are you from the future?

16

Here from a next month to warn us about presidential candidate Hunter Biden.

I read the first few sections and it's not that interesting

18

That's because all this was public knowledge before! So, why do they block it?

It's about one of the most disliked VP candidates in US history, a dude that wears eyeliner (I guess), doesn't know how many eggs are in a dozen, and is almost as bland as the last tRump VP pick! You don't even need to read a couple sentences to know that!! ( ˘ ³˘)

Yeah, but bland as the last one was, can you imagine Vance doing the right thing and certifying the election after the shit show on Jan 6th?

I may not be a Pence fan, but he earned a ton of respect from me that day.

6

Right, he was shit all other times in his political carrier. But that one time, he did his duty, despite the threats.

4

The noteworthy items in that dossier make me wonder what kind of decisions they made while picking Vance. I initially assumed it was because he was a project 2025 groupie, but given that the dossier highlighted his anti-Ukraine stance, maybe project 2025 was just a nussance worth putting up with.

11
lemmy.world

The stupidest part is that there's nothing in that dossier that isn't already public information.

Let me guess, it's about...leather-upholstered furniture?

29

If only it were that interesting. It's literally all the things we already knew about Vance that made him a liability even though Trump picked him anyway.

35

Has it ever been confirmed that he only identifies as being attracted to leather couches? I was of the impression he didn’t have a particular type, but I could be wrong.

5

Public knowledge vs. common knowledge. They want to prevent it from being the latter.

Threads doesn't really have a track record when it comes to things like this, so I don't blame them for enforcing their terms and conditions. The difference here is that Twitter has allowed such things to be posted time and time again but won't allow it in this specific case. It's selective enforcement.

Maybe Threads doesn't, what about Meta?

30

I'm not too sure, maybe this is Zucks first pivot after that warning from Trump.

You can find The Truth^TM at TRUTH SOCIAL. See, it’s right there, in The Name. The Bigliest Truth you’ll find anywhere it’s great!

lemmy.world

First of all the docs are NOTHING. There's nothing of interest there.

So why the News Article about the Social Media?

Well, it's a horse race, innit

-25

The story here is right-wing-billionaire-owned centralized social media trying to push society into fascism.

32

If it's nothing, then there's no harm in linking to it. Why block it?

By taking this action, the Streisand effect has taken place and now people are actively looking for it.

Edit: clarified my comment

Well, I don’t have either, but if you do you could post it?

Again, so far as I can tell there’s nothing of interest - including his 2006 ticket for speeding.

He owns a 1.3 million dollar house and paid 30k in property taxes. He’s a right wing shitheel just like it says on the tin.

The story here is about keeping their names in the headlines, imo.
