You're correct, but the word has been rendered pretty much useless through misuse and now means "anything funny shared online."

Images with added or altered text. Simple enough. If I do a search for "meme" I don't get any of the items above.
This community quickly turned into a garbage dump of no-effort posts that all get upvoted. It sad.
