My biggest issue was there was no real way to mark anything as read (in bulk; the mail app just wasn't capable).

I used a free trial of the app "chuck" to bulk clean it up and then ultimately to archive everything and I really appreciate the clean inbox. I keep stuff I want easy reference to read and in the box (pending shipping and stuff I want to act on later), and delete/archive the junk as it comes in. I didn't think the mess bothered me, but having it clean is really nice.

Ahhh I'm too old for this. I vaguely remember it being a fake calculator app and instead some sort of messenger?

You can set any icon to anything you want so doesn't even need to be fake.

That's gonna depend on your launcher, for me it's just long press an icon + tap edit

If it used the notification display to show your most recent calculation reault, that might be useful. I know some apps mis-use the notification counter for other things.

well I always turn notifications off. Not even messages have notifications, I see it when I see it
