This just makes me want to go back even less.

Definitely not going back, and I had a 9 year old account.

That guy is riding so hard to be the next Zuckerburg. I really hope everyone agrees to go indefinite on this black out after tomorrow. His tactic is to wait them out, so not giving any definitive date of return seems like the way going forward. I also kinda hate that Reddit is now being capitalized for the resource of its "community." Fuck you Spez, you malignant little weasel.

I won't be. A couple /r/'s I will check from time to time but no more doom scrolling.

Yeah this is pretty much what I plan on doing, still checking a few super niche subreddits with old.reddit that there isn't a replacement for, no more phone with RIF

He's probably right unfortunately. People seem to still be using Twitter despite the shitshow that is rapidly becoming. The vast majority of users will go right back, but I think damage has been done to trust in Reddit overall.

I read on Mastodon that they have started replacing mods and reopening subreddits already.

Sounds great. Who is going to moderate them? Reddit can't even seem to do the things they say they will do (Modtools).

12

Reddit admins have big "No other communication exists outside of reddit" energy.

9

That is kinda funny because Reddit just laid off a bunch of employees recently. There is no way they have the man/woman power to pay attention to all of the subs.

2

It passed for me. Deleted my account today and now it's all over.

5

I certainly hope not, but unfortunately they very well may be right. Reddit has a pretty short attention span. Hopefully the critical parts don't just reopen though.

4

I'm so much happier after this move. Its a more niche community which is what I'm looking for. I started my Reddit account maybe a couple years ago to balance the harm my work has caused (adtech tracking). I'll leave my account up and unintended so searches will remain accurate. But I don't see myself going back.

Can we get a choice quote from the Digg CEO in 2010 saying something similar?

Love this one:

"Soon after Digg released previews of its new version, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian posted on his personal blog an open letter to Rose[17], where he speculated that "this new version of digg reeks of VC meddling", and that it is "cobbling together features from more popular sites and departing from the core of digg," which, as he quotes Rose's statement from Digg's debut in 2004[18], "give the power back to the people.""
