G'day all! Time to sit down with my dinner and read back through your day, as I do when I've been too busy to Lemmy. I look forward to reading about your adventures!

Couch came mid afternoon, delivery guy obligingly carried it into the lounge (would have been bloody hard for me to get it in on my own.
Zooks was already sitting on it upside down when I was putting the legs on, and purred for a solid hour once it was all put together.
We're now happily stretched out while I watch random stuff on YT.

13
aussie.zone

Newcouch Zooks tax? 🥺 I love it when cats glom onto new items and take prompt ownership of them

6

Yes I wasn't sure about it at first since the walls are kind of a light sage but the Ishka cushions I have have green in the pattern so it ties in well.

It’s not the shopping, it’s not the cooking. It’s thinking what to cook and cleanup that tires me. I know someone that eats the same meal on each night, eg pasta Monday, taco Tuesday etc. Planning is easier sure but I think the boredom would kill me. And the endless life chore of dishes is soul sucking.

12

this is why I got a giant freezer. When struck I make ALL THE THINGS

when meh, I pull a lasagne or bolognaise or curry or dumplings or whatever out of freezer and cooketh.

Dishes are worse than scrubbing the loo! I despise it. Never ending cycle of ick.

7

I don't like it but I don't hate it, I don't think about it, just do it. Which I suppose is a way of coping with doing doing something tedious and ick.

4

I keep a google sheets list of things I know how to cook. then fill in the blanks with youtube shorts that look interesting enough to tackle.

6

I get this. I feel like I just washed up and then… Where did all these dishes come from?

6

Go to Aldi and look in the freezer dept. There's a shit load of stuff in there to give you ideas. Pair freezer stuff to fresh stuff.

there have been studies!!

It's not boring to eat the same food.

It helps reduce stress as there is one less choice to make a day and people learn to enjoy a reduced menu.

4
aussie.zone

Can confirm. I was the subject of a focussed study where I cooked and ate green chicken curry every night for 12 months. I loved it. Still love it. Probably couldn't do it again though on account of family members I've picked up since then saying things like I don't like it, it's boring, we had it last night etc....sigh

6
aussie.zone

Whoa, 365 nights of the same meal?? I love green curry chicken, but that sounds horrific! I think I’d be an exceptionally bad candidate for those studies. I need variety.

My husband I each have a couch facing each other and he likes to fart up a storm on his side lately so I have told him if his filth breaches international shores I'm gonna unleash my nuclear power aka lavender spray. Tensions have eased today since it's Friday. A ceasefire if you like.

I've seen the kid come in to the room and go "nup" and back out.

12

It's been a really really long day of talking and meetings but mostly worthwhile. Some genuinely thought provoking stuff. But it really, really stretched out the day :/ At least I get paid for the extra hours (or take it as time in lieu). Having two g&ts and walking home helped take the edge off a lot.

On my way back I also reported an expensive fancy car that was half jutting out onto the footpath of a main road because two other cars were already tandem parked on the driveway. I usually never bother, but eff it. These are rich people in an expensive area, it isn't some back road, they can cop a fine for being lazy shits.

This weekend has some social stuff but also a lot of financial decisions. Got my bonus and tax return today - yay 🤑! Now come all the expenses 💸... Energy bill came in - big jump in use, 9.42kWh (~$3) day. Need to organise replacement of radio in car with android auto. Need to organise car service. Need dental clean. Need drs appt after like 7 months. Need to rebuild savings. Need to plan how much longer I'll continue working FT...

But I think about where I was just over a year ago and so many years prior, and I'm SO grateful that I have all these choices now.

11

Was just shaving and noticed a HAIR protruding from one of my nostrils! NOOOOOO I'M NOT OLD YET!!

4

I've had to stop plucking the greys out of my eyebrows or I'd have no eyebrows left. Not a single grey in my hair though.

3

bruh. You aint got shit to complain about so long as your temples are looking ok!

3
aussie.zone

Apparently it has been a year since I last changed power/gas companies, so I have just been through the whole energy compare thing again. It is annoying how much of our lives we have to waste on this stuff, and it sucks that we effectively penalise people who can't do this. People like to call it a "lazy tax" to put the moral responsibility on individuals, but in reality it is primarily a penalty on people who struggle because of literacy issues, disability, age etc. A civilised society should be able to manage a fair distribution of essential services, instead we have created a system designed to take more from the most vulnerable people.

If you like slay the spire type stuff there’s one called Monster Train, it’s a little bit different though.

I play Honkai Star Rail so there’s always that.

Cheers! I'll suss em out. I try not to play games on my studio PC and leave it only for music, but it can run recent games quite well. So it's a struggle lol

2

They can both be played on iPad. Honkai Star Rail is free but it’s a gacha game at its heart.

Monster Train is a paid game on the ipad

Just wanted to say I'm really enjoying it! Thank you for mentioning it, I've been playing it quite a lot the last few days! :) just wanted to pass on my thanks

It's insane to me that there isn't an age cutoff of the standard retirement age for the highest-level job in the country.

If the party steps him down now, it'd be the responsible thing to do but it'd show weakness and go back on everything they've been saying (that he's fine) and they seem too arrogant to do that. Plus the fickle media/voters would probably label the party as unstable (which maybe they are) and lose them the election.

If they leave him on and he dies soon, the party looks stupid for not standing him down sooner and if he dies after winning there would be a lot of talk about the intention of getting the VP in as president without people voting for them.. another issue with their entire system of voting for the "president" and not the party/policies.

If they leave him on and he keeps kicking and wins, you'd have to trust that serious people are actually running the country and he's just rolled out to flub through speeches and shake some hands. If he loses then they have 4 more years of a cartoon-supervillain president assuming he lives through them.

I don't see a way back for the USA from the crips vs bloods level of division their people are in plus their need to make politics into entertainment. The hero-worshipping of their politicians is baffling to me. They're politicians!

11

If they leave him on and he keeps kicking and wins, you’d have to trust that serious people are actually running the country and he’s just rolled out to flub through speeches and shake some hands.

This is essentially the scenario if Biden wins. He's been in politics long enough to know how things work and what can be done through which channels. He's good at putting experience people in the right positions in his cabinet. He's got contacts and is still very much a 'Statesman'. I doubt he has a strong guiding hand in many of the policies, but rather acts in an advisory capacity.

Trump is the exact opposite, where he has no idea what he's doing BUT wants to be involved.

Best case scenario, Biden wins, governs for a while, resigns and Harris is Pres until end of term. Her legal background might make her much ruthless than Biden in dealing with Trump and his ilk.

6

I can't imagine wanting to do a job that big at that age. If I make it to 80 I would like zero responsibility thank you, time to potter around or travel or whatever fun looks like in the moment. Not running a bloody country.

that will leave Joe to run his own campaign

3
TinyBreakreply

the problem as I see it is Trump could have a stroke on stage and his people would still vote from him. President Biden sadly cant rely on insanity of his supporters, the downside of being the "good" guy I suppose.

6

Yeah true but I wanna see someone competent to whip his arse in the election. I wanna see sore loser.

  • One thoroughly sprayed with neat vinegar on both interior and interior of lid, closed, left 24 hours
  • One closed with an open container of bicarb soda, left 24 hours

I actually have a UVC sterilising cabinet, but it's....not designed for these. Dammit.

(For anyone interested, voila. and well worth it if you do stuff that requires regular sanitising. or even just want to nuke water bottles)

2
aussie.zone

In order to assist, 1. What are totes? 2. What does barbies arse smell like?

3
Taleyareply
aussie.zone
  1. plastic storage totes. heavy duty storage containers with lids. These ones, for precision

  2. it smells like an ancient tyre fire site. I can only assume without penetrative holes they get real fuckin' weird with it.

3
aussie.zone

It’s probably plasticisers and other VOCs coming out of the freshly made plastic. Something with degreasing ability will get the surface stuff off (like a kitchen spray, dish soap, windex, etc) but since the smells are embedded in the plastic itself, it may take some time for the smell to dissipate completely. Leave out side to air out for a week.

2
Taleyareply
aussie.zone

how about industrial degreaser? 'cos I have that....

2

Test it first, some chemical cleaners can be too strong and ‘melt’ plastic. (Not melt but will etch it or make it sticky). However cleaning agents can only ever remove the surface smells. Depending on the type of plastic (ie the ingredients the plastic is made of) it may smell for a shorter/longer time as the smells slowly dissipate. Some plastics can smell years later, some are fairly inert smelling after a few days.

3
aussie.zone

Put them in plastic bags and pop them in the freezer for 48 hours. The cold should kill any bacteria that cause the odours. I used to do this with my boxing gloves and worked quite well.

2
aussie.zone

Ah, I assumed 'totes' refered to tote bags. Should have read your descriptions more carefully.

If you've scrubbed with dawn, perhaps fill it hot water and dawn AND leave for 12 hours or so.

3
Taleyareply
aussie.zone

concerns about deformation on that front though. Hmmm.

3

Generally storage boxes (I'm assuming we're talking about those) are made from thermosetting plastics that should not deform under heat. Don't use boiling water, just hot from the tap and it should be okay. Unless you want to get extra scientific and check the plastic composition.

2
aussie.zone

Do you have any coffee grounds? Soaking with used coffee grounds is my go-to for odour removal.

2

4

Sorry for the rant:

Stressed about the water leak from my washing machine. I reckon I might be able to fix the connection, as it's leaking from where the machines drainage pipe connects.

I don't mind if I have to pay the call out fee for the plumber, as it wasn't an urgent repair. Just stressed about how long it had been going for and the water in the carpet. I've had the AC on the dry setting overnight and will be picking up a dehumidifier this weekend. Gotta dry it all out before I can figure out how bad any water damage may be for the skirting board and carpet.

Sigh, I think my RE is gonna hate me now. Least I'm not planning on moving any time soon so maybe I can fix it up over time, bit by bit. Idk. Or the RE is gonna lose their minds and take us to VCAT or some shit. Idk how this works. I've never had this happen before.

Whatever, I get my tax return soon, so does my partner, and he is due for a big bonus soon. So if we do need to pay for extensive repairs by a professional, then we may be able to.

I've just felt so anxious and sick since yesterday, couldn't sleep, just stressing out over everything now.

Worst comes to worst, I could prolly ask my dad for help. But that just brings with it the feelings of being a failure of a daughter ugh. Ugh!

I know it will all be okay, we'll get through whatever comes at us, but I just feel a bit overwhelmed right now, I think.

Edit: I'm gonna call my dad tonight when he's done with work, I need some moral support from him I think 😭

6
aussie.zone

I would expect the damage to be covered by the landlord's insurance. In the past I've had both significant water damage from a roof leak and smoke damage caused by an accidental stove fire I caused covered by the landlord's insurane with no real issues.

7

That's a bit of a relief tbh. I reckon they would have insurance as I'm think this apartment is owned by the owner of the RE, or he's managing it for a good friend, iirc.

Thank you raven, I'm just a bit naive about this as I haven't had something like this happen before. I really appreciate this!

3
aussie.zone

Leak fix might as simple as tightening the hose clamp, or patching the hose. Biggest issue is actually moving the washing machine cause those bastards are heavy.

I wouldn't be calling a plumber just yet. They'll charge you a few hundred bucks for a $5 fix.

DIY YouTube videos are your friends in this case :)

Don't stress. This shit happens to everyone at some point.

6

Thank you 💜 I needed this. And yeah I wasn't gonna get a plumber for the washing machine, was gonna do what you suggested and find a YT vid on it, and research a bit on repairing it. Dad said he would help me with it if I need :D

Edit: oh the washing machine isn't that heavy, it's a refurbished top loader and dad reckons they're easier than front loaders 🤷‍♀️ but yeah it moves surprisingly easy. Side note: I always forget my massive fridge actually has little wheels, it looks heavy but it moves easy too lol

Thank you 💜

3

No worries :)

And if your old man is willing to help, he doesn't see you as a failure. Knowing when to ask for help is a sign of a sound mind. I low key love it when my kids (they're teens, but still) ask me for help. Us middle aged/older folks like to feel useful at times.

5

Try not to worry too much - like raven said, the landlord should have insurance to cover things like this. They might ask you to pay the excess, but check with the tenants’ union (or whatever it’s called) before you do this.

Do you have a fan heater? Running one of those pointing at the floor should help dry the carpet. A room at my work flooded twice and the cleanup involved running heaters for a couple of days. It stunk while drying but was fine afterwards.

4

I don't mind paying the excess or whatever, it'll hurt but it was my responsibility lol. I'm just waiting to see what the RE says about the plumbers report. I should have asked him but I wasn't thinking.

I actually don't have a fan heater. My anko one caught fire last winter so I checked it and never bought another. I've been running the split system but it's on dry ATM. It's old AF though, hence why I'll be getting a dehumidifier this weekend (we have issues with condensation as well, the whole building does). I check for a fan heater as well, but it won't be a fucking anko again hahaha.

4

Back in the 70s, a bloke named Len Evans was a notable wine expert. Consulted all over the world for his fine palate yada yada. A snobby USA reporter asked him what he kept in his cellar - expecting a list of fine vintages. Len (bless him!) replied 'Oh I don't keep a cellar - all the cardboard boxes went soggy".
Seriously, our cask wine just outperforms all other countries on the cheap but good standard. Do not, I beg you, drink cheap wine in France. It's called vin du table because it's made from real tables. Of the chipboard variety.

5
aussie.zone

I believe cask wine was invented (the cask part) in SA, so it'd make sense we're quite good at it!

I don't really want the pressure to drink the whole bottle in a few days. Sometimes that's easy, sometimes I go ages without a drink. 4 litres on tap, that's cold whenever you want, is super convenient.
