My best effort so far has been throwing my back out very badly by bending down to pick up a tea towel

4

I know a guy who sneezed in the shower while bending down and twisting slightly to pick up a shampoo bottle off the floor behind him, and put his back out such that he never worked again.

2

People are so surprised when you tell them, too. It’s like they expect you were lifting boulders or stopping a runaway bus, when it’s, nah, I just sneezed/bent down slightly. So unfair

2

Was supposed to study today but have a migraine. Hopefully it'll be gone soon.

Landed another interview Thursday so that's 2 this week!

15

I was just thinking.. imagine heaven like they show in movies and shows and stuff where there are people in white clothes up amongst the clouds with harps and stuff. Except imagine the weather is like it actually is at that altitude. Just super windy and really cold.

Anyway just thinking about my grandad. Miss you, pop.

aussie.zone

Ideally it'd be B. as it should have been from the beginning, but that's unlikely. The next best option is C.

A. is not an option, you really do need to be plain with them about how badly it's affected you and you're well within your rights to crack the shits. Tell them even that you keep getting woken up by the cops and with the lack of sleep could lose your job. Really be straight up about what's been happening or they possibly will allow the same shitshow to continue.

You're not entitled or a snowflake. Don't let them gaslight you into tolerating this situation because it's more convenient for them to be lazy.

They screwed up and put this kid in a setting that he wasn't suited for and it's disrupting your stability. They need to fix it.

8

I get it. It's very normal though. There's a difference to being in a situation for so long you kind of numb out a little vs experiencing something better and then losing that hope. Also some of what you're experiencing could still fall under the heading of institutional abuse.

IANAL and not familiar with the eligibility criteria, whether there's a child protection specific instance, but I do know there are organisations to protect vulnerable people in resi. Perhaps you might be able to find an independent visitor or someone to advocate for your best interests in all this. Because this current bunch aren't...

This one is in Queensland but perhaps there's a Victorian equivalent https://www.publicguardian.qld.gov.au/i-am-a-child-or-young-person/who-can-help-you/community-visitors

Ok, if you scroll down there's an entry for the Community Visitors Program in Victoria https://providers.dffh.vic.gov.au/useful-contacts-supported-residential-services https://providers.dffh.vic.gov.au/useful-contacts-supported-residential-services

Whether or not you want to contact them is up to you, as you've seen there can be blowback from mismanagement and complaining is risky when the organisation controls where you live. But definitely keep that in your back pocket if they try to send you back into an unsafe situation. Perhaps even call them now with a view to asking if they can help you

1

A is not a goer imo. B sounds like it was dreamed up by an honest politician (which does not exist). C means the department has to acknowledge it has fucked up - again. Which may not happen. Not a lot of good outcomes on offer here. For now, the hotel is looking more and more like the better short term solution until the kid either goes or cleans up his act. I really hope this situation works itself out in a way that you can cope with.

6
TinyBreakreply
aussie.zone

So I dont really know the specifics of the situation, but guessing there is a good reason they cant say "B, and if you stuff up one more time you're out on your ass" to the other kid?

Thanks for all the lovely wishes you guys 🥲 I had a long day at work which isn't how I usually like to spend it - but it was a really good day nevertheless; I got a free bun quietly added to my bag at the bakery on my walk to work, my colleagues utterly spoiled me with gifts, had a few wins, and I treated myself to Inside Out 2 which was awesome (if a little pat near the end). So many emotions thinking about how it's been so hard to accept parts of myself. It's just the film I needed to feel more accepting about where I'm at and less torn up about where my sense of self and core values went...

Moobeans has had more painkiller/antinausea shots and has started eating a little more! Cracking open a tin of Fancy Feast also helped. Vets say it's like feeding them McDonalds but if it gets her eating and taking her regular medication that's fine.

Bit of a disappointing work today. On Friday I messed up a spreadsheet by simply copying and pasting things wrong. However, I didn't pick up on it until late today, when I had already done a heap of work on it (and spent the whole time wondering why it was throwing so many errors). I really felt like I dropped a notch in my manager's eyes, as I had to bring them in to work with me to fix the sheet, not to mention other people who I showed the report to who picked up on the same thing. Ever since my interview for this role, i've been approached by people in different departments saying 'they've heard a lot of good things about me' - apparently someone on the panel has spread word that I'm some fantastic contributor to the role, and now I feel like that reputation has been tarnished because I couldn't figure out a very simple mistake. Sigh. Wish I could just undo the last few days.

9

These kinds of mess ups really feel so big at the time, but I reckon... You'll be able to look back on it and laugh in the future. It might feel really far away, but I promise this absolutely won't define you!

If you reckon you thoroughly messed up, maybe an upshot is people have a more realistic expectation of you and it won't feel like you have as much of a burden on your shoulders. And then maybe you'll get to prove your worth in unexpected ways down the track 😄

2
aussie.zone

That sounds like a pretty good result, all things considered. As much as living in a hotel in the short-term isn't ideal, it's your own space & safe.

And not great that the kid's now angry at you, but it sounds like you won't have to see him again?

Hopefully everything stabilises quickly.

5
aussie.zone

Apparently they also told the other kid a number of my concerns I’d expressed in my email (but hadn’t actually told him) and he got angry and started threatening me. So that’d probably be why I’m staying here until he leaves. Before this we were on more of a neutral footing, now he has an active dislike for me.

Ugghh. They mismanaged the hell out of that and actively aggravated the situation. Whoever is doing this sucks at their job.

Also this kid needs to take some responsibility - there were conditions for him living there so if he broke the rules and has cops coming around then that's on him.

4

You should read "The Trial" by Kafka if you get the chance. Great critique on bureaucracy. It's not a long book.

3

Good morning friendship pals! The sun is shining(somewhere), the birds are chirping(but not so much), and HOPEFULLY my delivery is coming today. "Transferred at Sunshine West" yeah you BETTER BE.

I had a dream where robots invaded the earth so that was cool and I fully support then in their hobbies.

9

Did they send it via couriers please? Every time I've gotten something from them they have, and couriers please has managed to fuck something up.

5

That sounds like them. I swear they've never managed to deliver anything well.

One time they broke one delivery, and then broke the replacement that was sent.

3

"Your delivery is coming today" message received. There's construction across the road so time to look out the window every time I hear a van for the next 4 to 8 hours

Edit: Est delivery is 2:55 to 4:55 noooooo

I usually get deliveries by 1pm due to being in a good spot on the usual routes. This suffering is immense.

High in both senses because I was laying on the roof of a tall apartment building and it seemed to be bending over to tip me off. Washed my hands after throwing away the corned beef plastic wrapper. Water was cold but think nothing of it. Realize I need to pee so I go to the bathroom, stand there, pull it out (as ya do) and then YELP and jump 20 feet into the air. Yeah so turns out the water had made my hands VERY cold...

7

I decided due to my current cough/sniffle combination to call in sick for tomorrow. Risotto will be cooked in a few minutes and I plan to waste the rest of the evening watching videos before going to bed happily knowing I can sleep in as long as I want to. It would be a lot more relaxing plan if I didn't keep sneezing. Mr Woof is not a fan of sneezes and has already evacuated the lounge room.

Hope you’re feeling g better soon

there's a road closed off near my house. Its well documented, signs everywhere ect. And the amount of people who drive past 6 or 7 signs only to get to the actual closure and go "Oh. shit. I guess I have to U turn" is crazy! The cops should just stand their and just be taking licenses off these folks cause they are showing 0 situational awareness.

6

I live near one of the railway crossings they turned into an overpass, and the whole time our street was blocked off at the train line people kept doing that. They would drive up to the barrier then get shitty because it was hard to turn around due to parked cars. It’s like they’d read the signs but still think, nah, I’m special, that doesn’t apply to me.

5

The road closure is not in Google Maps. This is the same reason the Montague St bridge keeps getting hit - Google Maps sending people down that road.

4

Ah but the closure MIGHT be further along the road from where they are going - and so they take a chance and lose it.

4

There was one on the corner of Duggan St and Albion St, Brunswick West.

I rat run that intersection 8 times a week.

That intersection had "road closed" signs on all 3 sides, but in reality every time I drove around it at all hours of the day, it was open and cars were flowing freely.

So I just started ignoring it until they actually sealed it off and started digging 2 weeks later lol.

3

It's been a very exciting day today. I have folded laundry, emptied the cat litter bin and sprayed poison liberally around the yard. Now I'm pondering the question of whether to change into a slightly heavier top before walking the dog.

So one of the things I found out while cleaning out the garage was that my old childhood teddy had been left out there - and of course in a spot where it leaked 😖.
A soak and then a run through the washing machine on a gentle cycle didn't shift the dirt, so I tried putting him in another pillowcase and running the normal cycle - which got the dirt out but also half the stuffing.
Any suggestions for repairs? I seem to remember there was a discussion recently about it.

Here's a good guide. https://www.instructables.com/Stuffed-Animal-Restoration/

However a seam ripper might be safer than an exacto knife if you have one. Pick a relatively straight/flat seam to open just to make it easy on yourself when closing him back up. I'd also recommend not wringing his skin out but rolling it in a towel and pressing that under a book to remove water, and then air drying. (Wringing can stretch out fabric and dryers can cause shrinkage or permanent shiny spots where the faux fur got flat ironed against the hot drum.)

If you feel a bit out of your depth or don't want to take your chances you can take him to the Doll Hospital https://thedollhospital.com.au/

anyone got any good recommendations for where to get a sturdy long lasting couch? looking for a 2 + 3 seater +/- recliner. time to replace our 8 year old ikea options

5

I bought a couch from Koala 3 years ago, and it has barely any wear and tear from the cat. Super easy to put together too.

2

NOT fantastic furniture, lasted 12 months and had to be replaced. Took a punt on a Focus on Furniture one (they were next door to fantastic, we are not imaginative) and so far seems to be going really well. We're only about 12 months in though.

Get checked at a physio if it's still bad in a day or so. The Melbourne sports medicine centre has an physio by the name of Simon Nelson.

I swear by this guy. He figured out what was wrong with my neck after other physios were telling me "it's all in your head".

It wasn't. My shoulder was out of alignment.

I bought a puck light from Reject shop for the kids to play with. I thought they'd all be the same but apparently 'you get what you pay for applies here too'.

The button is already busted and hard to press, and the magnet can barely hold the weight of the light itself. That's the sort of thing I assumed would be the same everywhere

4

I had a bunch of these from Ikea when the kids were little. Very useful when the kids awoke in the middle of the night. They were strategically placed around the house, I remember one being in the kitchen another in the bathroom. One in their room.

They were <$5, used 3x AAA batteries that lasted ages and had great magnets. If you have a real use for them, I recommend the Ikea ones. Of course, the real challenge with Ikea is actually walking in and out and only buying the $5 you went in there for. I've never managed it.

4

I have some other lights around I use.I'm sure I could find some at Jaycar or bunnings as well.

The kids just love to turn them on and stare directly into them

2

I recently bought a medium size candle from a dollar store, cost $5, it won't burn properly because the wick is too thin for the wide candle. This is a bit of manufacturing cost cutting that is surprising and annoying.

Just say voting in this year's logies is compulsory, who are you voting for to win the Gold Logie for Most Popular Personalty on Australian Television? Nominees are:

▪︎ Andy Lee
▪︎ Julia Morris
▪︎ Larry Emdur
▪︎ Robert Irwin
▪︎ Sonia Kruger
▪︎ Tony Armstrong
▪︎ Asher Keddie

4

I dont know who half these people are, and the other half I dont know what shows they even have on.

7

I'll just pay the fine and not cast a vote. I would also match the fine amount with a charity donation to make sure Julia Morris doesn't win.

Obviously Tony Armstrong. Talented, charismatic, seems to genuinely not be a dick.

But I would never actually vote.

If you have the budget, I recommend you get yourself an air fryer. I know that doesn't really help you with your present problem. I don't know whether you can cook it up in a frying pan. I've always had access to an oven.

You can probably cook it up in a Microwave, but take it out of the foil first.

3

Bread is easy to do in a pan. I once had a very small kitchen and tried to do one-person meals with a single pan and minimal prep or washing up.

I would cook a few fried eggs then push them over to the side (moving that half of the pan a little off the flame) and fry the unbuttered bread on the open part directly over the heat. Toasting the bread like that soaked up the leftover oil from the eggs for easy cleanup and kept everything warm. Cheese is a good addition, but salt and pepper (and maybe dead horse) is enough.

You can also microwave a potato til soft and roughly chop it up. Serve with butter and seasonings (salt, pepper, and paprika), or a little tin of tuna drained of oil. Or fry the pre-zapped pieces to brown them and push them to the side to do some eggs.

If you’re careful you can cut and stir/flip with only a fork, season the food in the pan or bowl, and eat straight from what it was cooked in. Leaving you to wash only one pan and one fork.

2

Should be ok. Separate all pieces first and if you can put more butter or oil on each piece, that would make it better. Low to medium heat.

They are always scabby on the butter.
