My highly intelligent cat woke up from his nap, walked past his (full) food bowl and came to tell me urgently that he was HUNGRY and he needed to be FED or he would WASTE AWAY AND STARVE.

He would last maybe 10 minutes in the wild.

Tommy:

aussie.zone

Oh, but look at that gorgeous mane and regal expression. Sir Tom clearly needs FRESH food that he can SEE YOU SERVE because anything else could be a poisoning attempt on the king

11

He needs an attendant to watch him eat. Perhaps he might choke? Who am I to question it, His Fluffiness is clearly in charge.

5

I have a Tommy too. He’s, um, 32 and full of polystuffing but 😺🧸

8

Oh Tommy. Does no one love you? You look absolutely mistreated and neglected. If you didn't see the food go in your bowl then it obviously didn't happen, poor boy.

5

Knock off oodie update. Washed it. Gave it two spins and popped it on the rack in front of the heater yesterday. No need to spin dry - it's basically dry this morning. The cuffs are a bit damp but I'm just gonna roll them.

This has been your PSA from snuggled land ...

12

Today was good. Lots of great food and family time. Talked to my cousin's daughter, a 4yo middle child, about Pokemon and I think she really likes me now :D

Got my birthday presents, one of which is a book called 'Mickey' and it's about a cat, so I'm stoked.

10/10 day, would do again lol

So I spent 15 hours in bed only to struggle to get maybe 8 hours sleep? Jeez. I just couldn’t get my brain to calm down. I wasn’t raging or anything, but just constantly distracted and unable to chill.

My mental health feels ok… so I wonder if the COVID’s messing with my brain?

Glad it’s not just me. Did you find anything to help? Or just had to face it?

3
aussie.zone

Just faced it. I put on soothing podcasts/audiobooks and just dozed. Kept reminding myself it was just the inflammation and it would get better.

4

Yeah good call. I think I was trying to fight it all night which obviously got me nowhere.

1
TinyBreakreply
aussie.zone

Yeah, I feel that. Assuming none of your usual coping mechanisms worked either?

4

Yeah I tried that for a few hours but ended up feeling worse cause I think I THOUGHT I should be asleep. Might just chuck on some spa music tonight and not even try to go to sleep but just plan on listening to music in the dark.

1

I recorded my little guitar jam on my phone yesterday just so I could listen back to it. It's actually good and I'm turning it into a track.

It's kind of about being fucked over by that guy who called me "family" and then turned on me for no reason.

It's cathartic.

the old school queers have been having tremendous fun with that on tumblr. The eggs, not so much "omg guys it's so bad that he's calling us this, it's not a joke"

I kindly reminded them that I pre-date the AIDS crisis, the pope calling me a removed doesn't even register past background radiation.

Maybe the potato thing was a rosti - the scandi take on hash browns or latkes. Rosti are super yummy.

Fingers crossed it can be mitigated somehow, and things can settle or he can go somewhere higher support

3

they got a bunch of people through lockdown. You can get them at Aldi in the frozen section.

Oof, I do find most Indian is expensive to eat out for one person as the curries are really expensive if you want to try a couple but then one serve is enough for two people. You don't get as many set meals or single-dish meals for dinner unlike Chinese or Southeast Asian places. Bring on more South Indian restaurants with thaalis! That's how Indian curries should be enjoyed imo 😋

Flying to Melbourne this morning, boy are my arms going to be tired.

Going to see my favourite comedian who was originally not coming to Brisbane... But then all of about 48 hours after we committed to tickets and accommodation in Melbourne announced Brisbane dates too. Funny joke, this is why he's my favourite comedian.

Jokes on him though - I'm still going to go to Melbourne and get me a parmi, and then I'm going to see him in Brisbane too. Now who's laughing? 😎

9
aussie.zone

a parmi

Get thee to the outer darkness, you heathen. In this town it's a 'parma' and collectively we will all die on this hill.

13

The real State Of Origin is Parmi versus Parma.

I mean obviously you guys are wrong, but it's neat to argue about.

3

I'm sorry, I don't speak the local dialect. It's a, how you say, chicken breast with crumbs? Or as the French say - le parmi. And chips on top. Always on top, or the side. Never under.

5

You will learn or go hungry. A schnitzel with tomato sauce, ham and grilled cheese on top, chips on the side and an excuse of a salad - this is the glory of a parma.

12

Last Parma I had was at The Standard in Fitzroy and it sucked. Try the Union Club or The Napier, also in Fitzroy.

It's gonna be a stunning day out there. Can't wait for that sun

7

The song is coming along. It's been a while since I've written something whose foundation is guitar.

What I usually do is stop working on it after an hour or so, make a copy to listen to and come back the next day. Less likely to get too caught in the details.

Went to the Coburg Farmers Market today (we haven't been there in ages) specifically to get Temple Road Wellness Blend Chai. Miniest absolutely loves it and it's great when you're feeling a bit off colour. Can't resist buying soaps, it's one of my weaknesses, so I bought a rose geranium & grapefruit one and a lavender & peppermint one. Aside from that there wasn't much of interest to me specifically. Elder loves the Gorgeous George probiotics stuff, and there used to always be a stall there, but we discovered that he sold the business to someone (Mumma Made) who will be at the Essendon Farmers Market tomorrow. Funny coincidence was Mr P already said that he wouldn't mind checking that one out tomorrow, so Elder is really excited for that. He loves the chilli hommus and I love the beetroot kraut and the basil pesto 🤤😋 I can see this is going to be dangerous! I like farmers markets a little too much lol.. Sometimes I think that if I had some good bread, cheeses, nice simple hommus and pesto type dips, some pickled vegetables or kimchi or sauerkraut and odd seasonal fruits and vegetables, that I could just live off endless variations of that stuff for the rest of my life.

Could barely see 200m ahead during this morning's 6am.

Craving veggies... no fancy seasoning, just loads and loads of roast broccoli, maybe carrot, and steamed corn. Want to make something with my scotch bonnet sauce so I'm thinking some kind of jerk fish. Plus herbed rice. That'll be tomorrow.

I'd scarf down so much broccolini but that shit is so expensive :c

People are talking like it's so cold I'm thinking like I should dress as I did when I lived in Detroit where the weather would be -10C for days and days on end. Warm hat under hood, feather knee long puffer, scarf, double layer gloves, knee high socks and snow boots. Jumper, pants and thermals.

6

For some reason, I feel that -10°C in Europe was a noticeably more pleasant than anything <10°C anywhere in Australia.

That was based on using very similar set of clothes, and measurement taken outdoors.

On another note, during the daily 6am drives in the recent 2 weeks, I would feel like I'm burning up while my wife is still shivering in the passenger seat while I got the heater on.

I've gone back to wearing a watch when out, it's just more convenient to look at my watch than dragging my phone out of my bag.

4

If you end up talking yourself back into getting a watch, I would highly recommend a semi smart watch like a basic Garmin. Notifications and quick replies without getting your phone out of your pocket are a game changer. Plus all the stats, which are cool ...

Yay, the fog has lifted to a beautiful sunny day - so much easier to deal with even if the air temps are cold. Am vindicated in putting my sheets out to dry before heading to meet a friend.

Energy levels are temporarily elevated from socialising, coffee, and sun. I NEED to get some physical movement in to keep it going... making all sorts of excuses not to do other things but I find sone enthusiasm in getting the carport cleaned. So it shall be done!

6

Gosh, it's been lovely so far. The forecast looks disgustingly grey so I'm spending as much time outside as I can. I'm thinking my next load might have to go to the laundromat to be dried, I just dont have enough to wash this weekend.

3

Crazy how the US can just admit to things like this and nothing ever happens.

I think there was already some anti government psychosis the pentagon could have easily exacerbated. The anti Vax movement here was also supported by most of the Murdoch newspapers and TV channels as well.

I heard a good take about this on Chapo that most people are not used to government intervention being a good thing in their lives. Neoliberal governments have spent so long stepping back and trying not to be involved in things that they were ill equipped to step in when they had to and people weren't used to having the government in their lives in that way

I've been thinking about how Coles has introduced an egg buying limit due to bird flu and what it's doing to cattle in the states.

We'll probably end up with vegan diets, not because it's the right thing to do, but because we completely destroy animal products through factory farming

6

Yeah. I'm not vegan (because my body can't tolerate a lot of the staple foods you need to stay healthy on a vego diet). But factory farming is cruel, excessive and leads to high density environments that mean serious problems with containing outbreaks and zoonosis. I'd rather things dial down a little and people eat less meat than whatever the hell this is.

Aaaand I changed my mind again and I'm now at a resort in NSW which looks suspiciously like a motel. Nice though. Has Foxtel so I've got the NRL on and a nice cold beverage.

They even have stubby holders! Cheers!

5

I was very against them and bought steel straws to carry around but now I can tolerate them with my iced coffee on the road.

I do still have a stash of plastic ones I brought home from America last year in my pantry. I haven't thought to use any yet (don't use straws at home).

Hungry Jack's soft drinks now have a cool flippy spout thing on their plastic lids so you don't need a straw and I wish everyone had them.

Edit: after writing this I tried to drink from my can while laying down and spilt it all over my beard. Luckily I have a steel straw with a bend in my travel cutlery kit!

3

I can't either. It's the texture. Bamboo is okay though if you can find them.

Pretty therapeutic cleaning out my carport after 3.5 years 😬 binned a whole lot of old crap from my old work car, swept up a huge pile of leaves, dust and debris, removed the years of neglect. Now it's unrecognisably clean and tidy! So much less depressing to look at! I'm sure my neighbours will be happy too.

Aint much for a Saturday but I definitely feel like I've earned the right to chill for the rest of the day. Not gonna push myself too hard this weekend...

Almost finished restoring the kukri (gurkha knife) last night. Interestingly when placed in vinegar several times overnight, it's the edge (hardest bit) that's most affected chemically.

A word of advice is don't tackle the edge after a few drinks. Looked like a murder scene.

5

Coming away was the right choice. Just pulled $1000 profit out of the club.

Motel was $160 and this trip uses about half a tank of fuel so let's call it a $790 winner. I've got enough points on my RSL member card to get a big free breakfast tomorrow.

aussie.zone

Just for the benefit of anyone who doesn't know: aussie.zone is "free" because we (the users) pay for it. We don't need to serve you ads.

We won't sell what you say or upload, either - but keep in mind that everything you say here is federated and essentially public. Someone will probably come along at some point and scrape all our data. We won't know it has happened and the open nature of the fediverse makes it impossible to prevent. So keep all that in mind.

4
bull⚡reply
aussie.zone

How much is hosting? I'd be happy to chip in and pay for a month or a percentage of the year or whatever. Sometimes I wonder about hosting charges when I upload images.

2

Our present costs are about $85/mo. We're pretty much funded at this point with existing donations through to the end of the year.

Lodion does periodical updates in the Meta Community on how hosting and finances are going.

2
aussie.zone

Indeed, and I did hear that many years ago. I interpreted that to mean that ads would be served. And potentially they would also spy on you to serve targeted ads. Furry nuff.

However they're taking data and personal photos from as far back as 2007 and nobody knew about AI back then. Changing the terms (often retroactively) and not allowing opt out is not cool and you won't convince me that anybody signed up for this. The overreach is insane.

3
TinyBreakreply
aussie.zone

Is it though? To be blunt: these fuckers are evil. If anyone was still harbouring under the illusion otherwise needs to wake up. It’s a bit like people complaining about Optus: how many times have they gotta screw their customers before the customers go “oh, I’m getting the raw end here!”

2

I know all of this. I've been knowing this. Unfortunately these practices are reaching into every platform, just ramping up and being forced into every conceivable thing possible (not just social media) and it's becoming inescapable. Refusal to engage is becoming less of an option.

I remember participating in citizen science programs helping to train AI to recognise cancer cells, and being excited at seeing how it was being used to generate simple legal forms for people who couldn't afford a lawyer. Now it's just being used to strip mine for profit, undermine workers rights/cut jobs and churn out deepfake revenge porn before regulations come in.

2

I used to use FB to keep in touch with friends but don't use it now because it's turned to garbage. Getting really sick of mainstream social media

Best of luck finding new rollers cos that won't be easy. Might have to get them relined or something. Impressive little mafchine though. There's a thought in my head that you could do some cool stuff with lino printing with it too if you're into that sort of thing. Sort of negative impression quasi silk screen printing on t shirts etc.

Sounds like your body needed the rest to recharge from the week's stress? It's good that you were able to relax though. This weather definitely makes it easy to not do very much at all. It's not even 5pm and I'm seriously feeling like falling asleep as well. Low power mode...

I was wondering if there was a function for threads to be bumped back up to the top when posted in? Just so it's easy to see active threads, there isn't a lot of duplicates, and similar stuff is more easily consolidated into one thread. (ie. Cheap eats)

No worries if not - I don't know how much work implementing that would be or if there's even the option on Lemmy.

3
lemmy.ml

I'm not sure if it is. Activity will bump threads when the person looking is sorting by active, but I don't think there's a way to bump them otherwise.

3

That's good, maybe not as easy to encourage other people to add to the threads but it's good for when you want to find active threads yourself

2

Went out and managed to pick up some chicken drumsticks early in the morning with a gift card.

Also scored a free hash brown, yay.

Couldn’t sleep so went out early while it wasnt crowded so chicken’s on the menu tomorrow I think.

Something involving me telling someone off for blocking and emergency vehicle and not letting them pass then my boss pulled me aside to tell me I shouldn’t have been so angry with them and to calm down.

Does anyone have suggestions for vacuum space bags that stay compressed please? The budget ones I bought somehow keep reinflating themselves no matter how carefully I seal them and suck out all the air.

Ps. Is there any difference between the Sard brand laundry soap bar and the pack of generic laundry soaps next to it? Is it just the inclusion of eucalyptus?

2

Slightly different fats used in its construction. Velvet is just as good and much cheaper imo. Velvet is lard based, Sard uses the lighter fraction hydrocarbons left over after petrol production. As does Pears soap. Generic brands usually use either lard or palm oil - you pays your money and takes your pick.

If you want something specific for stains, I find the Exit Soap sticks work better than sard. Can’t comment on regular wash usage though, for that I rotate between whatever powder or liquid is on special.
