I think the chunky lighting was probably mostly from me having smoothing lighting turned off, which is how I often play. Something about the lighting being chunky just makes it feel right I guess.
Man I forgot how C H U N K Y (and dark!) the lighting engine used to be. It really did bring out the blockiness in the game.
