Canadian Grand Prix Race Weekend Thread

Welcome

Hello everyone and welcome to the Canadian Grand Prix Weekend thread.

Details about this race can be found here.

Sessions

This thread will cover all the sessions this weekend, so that's all 3 practice sessions, qualifying, and the race.

We will monitor how this goes to see if we need more granularity.

Spoilers

The rules around spoilers are not yet in place, therefore we won't be enforcing anything around spoilers this weekend. This goes beyond the scope of this thread too.

If you do not want spoilers, please do not look in this community this weekend.

The aim is to have a finished set of rules ready by mid next week.

These conditions really bring out the chasm in ability between Stroll and Alonso.

17

Between Alonso and almost everybody else. Stroll was nowhere, but Alonso in his 40's is sharper than 75% of the current grid. His reactions when the car snaps on him is unbelievable.

6
Sentaureply
lemmy.one

Which is weird considering the fact that a few years ago stroll was pretty good in wet conditions

3
ibasawreply
lemmy.world

I always felt Stroll isn't good in the rain per se.. but he was very quick to change from wet/inters to slicks

He gambles and it paid off a few times

2
Sentaureply
lemmy.one

Well he has front row starts in Monza 2017 and Istanbul 2020. Both were wet qualifying with almost everybody on same tyres. Stroll gambled during neither of them

3

It might be that he has been Vandoorned already. His spirit has been broken.

You have to believe you're the fastest or you can just hang it up. Lance does not believe he is faster than Fernando it doesn't seem. If your goal is to do slightly worse than Alonso, you're always going to do worse than Alonso.

Wow, Williams with the big balls strategy, nicely done

15
sh.itjust.works

I respect it. They saw a small window to put in some fast laps on softs and they capitalized on it in a big way.

6

Nothing to lose everything to gain, and they took the opportunity brilliantly.

3
Tronsoreply
feddit.de

Just the perfect timing. Got the tyres into the temperature window before the rain got stronger. Not sure if those who put on the softs late will be caught out by the rain now.

4

Sainz and Tsunoda have been tripping over people all weekend. It's shockingly bad.

3
lemmy.world

Williams with 2 fastest sectors, just like we ll predicted.

Was weird, Sky did a reply that was cut to imply he was mimicking George’s crash.

how do y'all feel about race weekends with these later than usual session start times?

I hate them, give me my 8-9am sessions!
How about you Euros/Asians? Are these times better or worse?

9
itsmikeydreply
lemmy.ml

UK. Love them. Nothing like having a good weekend ending with a live race on a Sunday evening.

8

As an American, I greatly dislike the later times when races are on this side of the world. I don't mind waking up like 6,7,8am or whatever to watch a session. Or even staying up very late til like 4am. Even on Fridays for FP1 and FP2.

Idk, I like getting F1 "out of the way" so to speak, then I can do whatever else I need to do for rest of the day.

Like right now, it's 12:30p for me. That's not terrible since it's lunch time. But FP2 is at like 4pm; I tend to take a nap around then. If I was still working from the office, I'd be leaving the office around then.

5

there's nothing better than going to bed after being let down by ferrari

5

European here, if I don't have anything planned for the weekend, I love them. If I plan a night out on Saturday, I hate them. Right now, I love it.

3

I'm liking these liquipedia pages, so much context. Plus the session times posted there.

Rawe ceek, here we come!

8
feddit.de

Wow, can't believe just a few races ago we were talking about whether this would be Perez year. And he is not even close to Verstappen.

13

If we’re all being honest with ourselves, that was only ever hopeful thinking. I don’t think anyone actually believed it.

2
lemmy.ml

This new wall in the wet is pushing drivers out on to the racing line when they rejoin.

If its wet during the race, this has some dreadful implications.

8

Yeah, I’m almost afraid of watching lap 1 tomorrow

4

Yeah, those rejoins look really unsafe. This might cause a massive lap 1 incident even in the dry. Or when dive-bombing into turn 1 (which I don't like, but it happens quite regularly here) goes worng, this might force contact instead of a bail-out.

3

They should have stuck the wall on the inside to make sure drivers are duly cautious having crossed the finish line.

Right now, its insane.

7
feddit.de

Wow, Perez missings another Q3. Changing conditions give you some excuses, but overall that is not a good look against a team mate that is dominating the championship.

7

Yeah it's like a switch was flipped. Hope he pulls it together, or we'll see him being replaced.

2

Imagine him getting fired before Zandvoort. Not even getting to drive your home race is so cruel.

2

Driving too slow during the safety car so they could double stack.

1
feddit.de

I know that this post is for the full weekend. Could we still have a separate race discussion? I think this would make it a bit better to keep an overview.

6
itsmikeydreply
lemmy.ml

There are a couple of reason why I'm going to say no to this now.

  • I don't want to change how we're operating a race weekend during the race weekend.
  • I'd like to see the experiment of one post per race weekend through.

If we get enough feedback asking for more granular threads then when will absolutely consider how we change things for future races.

Tomorrow there will be a post-race discussion. Perhaps in there you can make this point again?

11

Not OP, but fair points.

Let's see how the discussion goes tomorrow. Enjoy the race!

3
lemmy.sdf.org

I see this post is apparently pinned, but I have to scroll way down in the community to find it

is this happening for anyone else? I think the pin feature on Lemmy is broken or something

2

Good call on not changing things as we're going! I personally do prefer to have separate threads, definitely easier for me to avoid spoilers that way when watching after the fact as opposed to live.

1

He got so unlucky last time. Let's hope the team got some good data from their upgrades kicking in!

1
lemm.ee

So it's effectively over now with Hulk on the front row?

6
itsmikeydreply
lemmy.ml

Session probably restarts, but if rain continues track will be slower.

6

Decent race if you ignore P1. Good overtakes and battles all over the grid.

My first race weekend in the fediverse was pretty nice. Still lots to improve like the experience of refreshing the page and getting comments from other instances in a timely manner but it was fun.

See you next time 😊.

6
fire202reply
lemmy.world

The session times do not match with weekend warmup because F1TVs coverage of practice sessions now includes a 15-minute preshow. 13:30, 17:00, and 12:30 local time are the correct times.

1
itsmikeydreply

Nice formatting, how did you get the red text!?

I can't see red text on my browser, but looking at the source it looks like they used backticks ( ` ) for code blocks.

I didn't realise the different code block implementations would give different colours. Very useful!

Stroll just isn't cutting it on Aston Martin anymore. Maybe his dad can give him a cushy office job so we can get a competent driver.

6

Send him to WEC. He's clearly got the talent for a top drive in any series except F1.

3

You think at some point he'll throw his hat out. This must be killing his professional pride, if he has any.

2

To be fair he never went to the softs. A question for AM themselves perhaps?

2

Max only feels something when he almost bins it. He must be so bored up there.

6
lemmy.world

Can you sort comments by new in Jerboa? Otherwise difficult to find new comments.

5

I haven't figured out how to do that which makes these live threads difficult to keep up with

2

Agreed. When we initially discussed session posts, I was open to a weekend discussion post... but we have the comment volume to support post-per-session, and the sorting is primitive enough that a I'd much prefer it for next race.

1
Omgarmreply
lemmy.world

Yeah I haven't figured out how to do that reliably yet.

1

What’s great weekend. Canadian GP, US Open, and the Ashes. F in the chat for my wife and kids’ TV time please.

5
lemmy.world

Is it 0% chance of race before and during the race or just during?

I recall the weather prediction a few days ago said rain during the race is unlikely but there could be rain a few hours beforehand.

5
midwest.social

I look forward to McLaren raising my hopes, and then dashing them quite expertly.

5

Gutted for both Lando and Oscar though, would love to see them in the mix.

1
sopuli.xyz

Leclerc eliminated because Ferrari decided not to switch to softs when he wanted to. Stop inventing!

5
lemmeinreply

Leclerc's problem is that he is always too submissive. Should have overruled the pitwall

5
itsmikeydreply

Just like Seb was doing whilst he was at Ferrari.

4
dylanreply

Exactly, Sainz seems to have taken that on board more than Leclerc

2

Sainz being failed by his engineer not letting him know of cars coming is another problem that needs to ge adressed.

3
Omgarmreply
lemmy.world

They would fold a winning hand before their opponents could.

2

I can imagine Xavi leaning over to the guy next to him: "Do you think this is a good hand? Question."

3
feddit.de

With the ongoing rain, that has to be the final classification. Great work by Hulkenberg and Alonso. Verstappen delivering as expected.

Unless the rain stops before the track is green flagged again. But it currently looks like it would take more than 7 minutes to form a dry line again, even if the rain stopped right now.

5

Maybe something behind the first 3 can change. But it looks to be way too wet.

3

Max just being able to laugh off nearly beaching himself on the kerb because God knows no one's catching him

5
feddit.it

Lol, Crofty couldn't wait to say red button.

4

Yeah but this year he's usually talking about the "Interactive" button so you could hear he was happy to say it.

3

If the rain picks up now and the softs take 2 laps to get to working temperature, those who just came in might lose out heavily.

4

Thanks to the mods for making this thread!

Hoping for a good race, though it's bit late in the evening for us Europeans

4

Oh boy, really hoping Alpine are just getting their mechanical issues out of the way before the race. Not a good sign with both cars bringing out the red flags...

4

At least 3 yellow flags

welp.. thats 1 virtual and 1 full one already

Ferrari amaze us with a strategy we’ve never seen before

Did they not just put under safety car unlike everyone else?

2

They are calculating on the hards being bad for the front runners.

1

Russell hit a wall so unlikely that they will have issues. Hamilton did just cut off Alonso in the pits!

1

What is this race direction? We're missing albon and Norris soft lap. Who is in charge this weekend? Seems worse than other weekends.

4

Yeah, pinning a comment seems pretty meaningless at the moment because Lemmy doesn't seem to be respecting the pinned status.

3

It's not just you. I think there is some issue with sort order and community posts. Nothing we can do but ride it out.

2
lemmeinreply
lemmy.world

Might be faster than being stuck in a DRS train so will be interesting to see how it plays out

3
💡dimreply
lemmy.world

another safety car might mess them up though.

This one is bunching the field up. Another safety car in 10 laps or whatever and Ferrari could end up dropping right down if they pit then.

Im surprised they did not split the strategy and pit one of them. but, its ferrari, we arent meant to understand

3

Aw, man, went to commercial right as Gasly was about to tell everybody how he felt about Sainz being in the middle of the track.

4

Lec was his team not listening to him when he said slicks were the way to go. They screwed him yet again with a bad call.

Woah look at mister going out on a limb here with the risky predictions. I like it, five schmeckels on my boy's pick, Max.

5
lemmy.ca

For those of us in Canada I hope one day we get coverage without Ads... That's my favorite part of the US GP weekends. :D

3

We do, but TSN (sports Network here) carries it all. So if you have cable why pay extra :)

Just that they shrink the race down into picture and picture and show you ads, always when something key is happening too.

1

We had ads in the UK for a few years. I hated coming back to the race to Murry Walker announcing "drama in the German grand prix..." only to get a replay of a major incident. I feel for you buddy!

2
lemmy.world

Anyone aware of any communities similar to r/motorsportsreplays or r/motorsportssteams?

3

Notice

We shall be banning discussion around F1 piracy in this community next week.

We will not take any actions until the rules are posted in their entirety in the sidebar.

4
SimpleDevreply
lemmy.world

I’m not aware of any communities yet, but I’d recommend taking a look at SportSurge. Easy enough to use, and should have streams for F1 sessions.

1
florgereply
lemmy.world

Yeah I'm aware of sportsurge, can never seem to find an F1 Live commentary stream though.

1
SimpleDevreply
lemmy.world

Interesting, I’ve used it for years for full seasons and never missed a session. Just be sure to use the new V2 version. Best of luck!

1

To clarify I meant F1TV's commentary, plenty of sky streams on there though.

3

What's French for "clutch"? I don't know, and it appears Alpine don't either.

3

🟥 Red flag. Ocon stopped with some mechanical issue, told to stop the car by radio.

3

I noticed that two teams had different orange lights outside their box. I've never really noticed it, but I wonder if all teams have their own unique light (shape, flashing, animation).

I'd they do, this should so be a feature in the game as a customisation.

3
sopuli.xyz

🟥 Red flag. Gasly stopped on track, with a broken driveshaft

3
jorgereply
sopuli.xyz

The track is clear, but the red flag is taking a long time.

4
jorgereply
sopuli.xyz

According to the Spanish broadcast, there is something wrong with the security cameras

4
feddit.de

Wouldn't it be more desirable to just stay in the box instead of risking a crash? Obviously the lap times will not improve in the next few minutes, right?

3
lemm.ee

Seems like lemmy.ml is having some trouble pushing out comments to other instances from this post 😬 Many comments here are missing on other instances

Might make sense to host these threads on a less overloaded instance?

3
Omgarmreply
lemmy.world

Are comments from other instances coming through alright though?

1
sunaurusreply
lemm.ee

Others pushing to lemmy.ml seems to be working as far as I can tell (except for some brief errors about 10 minutes ago).

But if lemmy.ml does not manage to push some of these external comments out, then they will only be visible on the source instance and lemmy.ml, and nowhere else on the federated network.

2

Bwoah what a quali session. Too bad about the penalty for Hülkenberg, but still a very good result. The Q2 Albon gamble was also amazing, as well as both McLarens being up so high in Q2.

Big names dropping out, small teams rising to the top, constantly changing conditions, this is peak entertainment imo. And somehow Max always comes through and puts the car where it should be, it's so impressive.

3

Is this the "official" race discussion thread? I couldn't find anything on my instance so came here.

Great race start by the way. Should be a good one. Enjoy!

3

Yeah, this week there is only this single thread for the whole weekend

3
lemmy.ml

I can guarantee Max is not letting anyone pass him on the outlap.

3
lemmy.world

Perez should have finished his soft lap, would have been easily enough for Q3, what an idiotic decision to come in.

3
feddit.de

Sainz should get even more then a 3 grid penalty. This was not only impeading, but crazy dangerous.

3
itsmikeydreply
lemmy.ml

The penalty is given for the infringement, not the outcome. Not that I disagree with you, but that is how the rules are applied.

6

Yeah sure. I honestly don't expect anything else. But they should really add some additional penalties for this very dangerous maneuvers.

2
sopuli.xyz

Alonso has to lift and coast, and de La Rosa in the Spanish broadcast hints that he has to save fuel due to the high race pace.

3
lemmy.world

Perez is losing on the Ferraris with softer tyres. How?

3
Omgarmreply
lemmy.world

Wonder what the issue is. Hopefully he can recover tomorrow...

2

Must have still fucked with his pace. Starting 20th is better than from the pits at least.

2

Either one hell of an experiment in aerodynamic creativity or someone forgot to screw on a nut this morning

3

Good race. Sucks for Russell to have to retire after that comeback. Albon did excellent.

3

Smashing into a wall must not be optimal for brakes if your car already has weak breaks.

3

That wall is going to create chaos if somebody doesn't make the corner.

1

At least they didn't lose out much compared to the other teams. Some poor tech is probably wraslin an NVR installation trying to get the cameras to work.

1

Some issue I think? But he's making up time with those hards.

1

Oh I almost forgot we were in RAWE CEEK! Came here to see that the sessions are already going to be very wet. Hope not another one gets put into red flag hell again...

2

How do the marshal's know when to show their flags. Are they connected to audio to F1 central?

2
SyJ
lemmy.ml

Sky spending a lot of time showing us this corner...

2

Probably allowing Russell time to figure out how to maximise options lol

1
itsmikeydreply
lemmy.ml

AF Corse are an independent team, not related to Ferrari. They just have Ferrari cars.

3

lol. Both Red Bulls with inters, but it isn't raining (yet). They use them for one lap to prepare them for tomorrow. And Mercedes copy the strategy.

1

::: spoiler early Q3 results VER HUL ALO HAM RUS OCO NOR SAI PIA ALB :::

1

Brundle was honest - he noted how far ahead Max would be if the race was clean without incidents. So in pure race pace that would be at least 10s faster than the next two teams.

I'm all for Alonso this season with his stupendous performance, but Max and RB's package is still the package to beat. AM need to be smarter to beat RB and Merc later into the season. Sucks that Alo's strongest performance yet was hindered by a rear braking issue.

If you wanna see how fast Max is, just compare him vs Checo...

2

I wouldn't say he had to push. The only actual pushing he did was to get out of the DRS zone and make a healthy gap, which he achieved with ease. The rest was just managing tire temperature because it's a track where you have to push to keep temperature in the tires. He couldn't cruise the laps like he could in warmer climates with tracks that have more corners.

1

FP2 will start 30 minutes earlier than scheduled (16:30 local, 20:30 UTC) and will be 90 minutes long.

1

Ocon pushes off Norris, and Stroll overtakes Bottas in the last lap

1

Through all the excitement, I completely missed that Lewis and Alonso are starting next to each other. I'm delighted for that prospect tomorrow, when Max diseappears and Hulk drops out of the points.

1

Interesting race and nice podium. Also happy for Albon, always nice to see him in the top 10.

1

Lewis is keeping up with Max. Oh wait as I type this he lost a couple tenths. Still, great pace of the Merc.

1

monaco marshalls would have cleared the track in a couple of seconds by raising that car by hands

1

FIA doesn't like Concertinas. He played the field by backing them up for a McLaren double-stack pitstop.

1
