A Third of North America’s Birds Have Vanished

cross-posted from: https://beehaw.org/post/2196737

Like many of you, birds are very special to me. I connect with them like I don’t any other living creature, save my wife and kids. I photograph them. I’ve covered my body in nothing but bird tattoos.

To see that a THIRD of them have disappeared is like a knife to the heart.

It's no surprise really. Insect populations are WAY down and just try to suggest to someone that they keep their cat inside. We can make a difference though. I've transformed the majority of my backyard from lawn to natives and I can see the difference. So many insects I've never seen before as well as prolific bird activity.

I know it's accurate, but as a relatively younger birder and wildlife biologist, that's just insane to me. I too have a few bird tattoos (and another next weekend). It's hard to imagine more birds out there, but easy to imagine more species going the way of the ivory-billed.
