That's a really great visualization that immediately cuts off responses of "but el niño!". No, this is historically atypical, even including periodic effects like that.

Water takes way more energy to increase in temperature than land does. There is a lot less land in the southern hemisphere. The global temperature difference between January and July is ~4-5°C

But the southern Hemisphere has less landmass which can warm up during summer.
