MADE IT TO ROUND 2!!!!!

Now I have a week to brush up on some tech stuff (active directory mainly), and we should be good!

I've found a good 6 hour tutorial on YouTube that'll do the trick.

21
aussie.zone

I did it ages ago at uni but haven't really had to use it much. Got my VM setup and a few 6 hour videos ready to go lol

Ad? Or AAD? Remember for bonus points call it “extra id” these days. Throw in a reference to conditional access policies. If that don’t give the security guys a semi nothing will.

2
aussie.zone

That's fucking hilarious 🤣 but you're absolutely spot on. They want basic AD knowledge which is pretty straightforward. Just brushing up.

I actually did work on IAM and conditional access at my last job, but only as a project manager.

2
TinyBreakreply
aussie.zone

Absolutely bring that up. Fair to assume they are directory synced to the cloud. honestly conditional access is one of the coolest things Microsoft have done in the last 10 years!!

For inside knowledge: Microsoft apparently working on enabling more complex passwords in entra id. I’m very excited about this because it’s stupid that you have to have an on premises active directory to be able to set minimum complexity requirements.

2
aussie.zone

Interesting! I've been hearing that two factor isn't enough anymore is that true?

This job, it's linked to the courts, so everything is still on prem. Although, maybe if I get this job I can start an initiative to move to the cloud.

2
TinyBreakreply
aussie.zone

Correct, mfa ain’t enough. Especially in sensitive settings like the courts. Government gets twitchy about data going out of the country. You might even find dealing with the courts the mandate IS on prem.

But I’ve had clients/customers/whatever click on links and have their auth token stolen from the browser, allowed an attacker to come in totally bypassing mfa. I’ve also had customers have their phone number ported away to steal the sms auth. Shit is scary.

2
aussie.zone

Pretty sure the court is mandated to be on prem if I recall from the interview. Browser stuff can be mitigated to a degree, but how the fuck do you stop number porting and Sim cloning?

2

So MS are dropping SMS auth totally. MFA requires an app, or it will. Its a VERY slow rollout.

Initial Assessment for Psych sessions done. Now on the wait-list for a bulk billed session.

Holy crap, I want to cry and laugh.

Looking forward to TAFE starting in July, too.

Still feeling wrecked. Am kind of wondering whether it's related to (an unpleasant road related incident)

::: spoiler spoiler an accident yesterday. I was riding home and had to u-turn as there had been accident involving a motorcyclist just several minutes before. I didn't see anything, but I saw the bobbing of a head and I knew they were desperately doing CPR. A witness said they'd been trying for 5 mins and didn't know when the ambulance would arrive. They were on the way when I was riding back in the opposite direction. The news reported that he died at the scene. I'm trying not to think about it, but it's hard since I ride there almost weekly. I mean, I know that it can happen anywhere, but most people on the weekends are sort of chill. It is a winding 60km that increases to 80km, but most people on the weekends take it pretty easy. Hell, I rode Black Spur yesterday and one of the drivers was literally driving half the speed limit. sigh Just that constant reminder of life. :::

Sorry, just needed to offload it.

Edit: Oh no. The spoiler isn’t working on mobile? I’m so sorry. 😔

12

It's hard to witness, your feelings are valid. Make sure you take care of yourself, self-care. Sending you good vibes

5

Thanks, StudSpud. I guess I didn't really realise how it might have affected me. I had a pretty bad sleep last night and didn't put two and two together.

2

Mate, being so close to the scene like that would absolutely have residual effects on your nervous system. Definitely take it easy, it can be a lot to process

e: btw your original spoiler worked, but I think you edited it wrong. You need to write it like this:

What a frickin dumpster fire. The EBU f’ed up hard. Also so much for not politicising Eurovision, Israel got over 300 points with one of the worst songs of the night! in the same 24 hours it warns of inceasing its bombing campaign in Rafa. I just….. I don’t even have words here. What the f is going on in the world.

The purpose of the UN is to get people talking in a room, as opposed to standing on opposite sides of the battlefield. To try and talk it out.

It's not perfect. nothing involving humans is. People seem to think it's like World Police but it's not.

The purpose of the UN is to get people talking in a room,

till one of the permanent members of the security council use their veto anyway.

People seem to think it’s like World Police but it’s not.

But hear me out, what if it was? Syria. Ukraine. Palestine/Israel. Georgia. Somalia. Civilians dead under the current system. I get nothings perfect, but fuck man we gotta do better than this.

2

The veto only applies to security council, not geberal assembly and is a bit of a two edged sword.

But in regards to world police? You're trying to use a drill as a hammer. It's not designed for that.

Ok, UN as a world police. How does that work? What actions do they take now?

Took a pretty heavy call from a friend this afternoon that is going through a rough time. She had an altercation with some friends in our group which I think set her off into a spiral. I had no idea about any of this. It takes a lot of courage to reach out to someone.

I used to get affected by the same friends too, but then learned to stop putting disappointing people on a pedestal, thinking they do the same, and rely on them for emotional support and wellbeing which was always one way. I made some new friends. I discovered that healthy adult friendships actually exist and instead of being upset about certain behaviours from those people, I learned to pity that behaviour. I hope she learns this too.

12

so many many hugs

it was a very sad day for me when I realised my family of origin would never be a support . I went non contact because of abuse, and my husband's family? I will do nothing for them anymore other than grunt oh noes when they tell sad tales. I am lucky to have a few people in my life I can rely on and I think that's what it's like. In life we only get a few people.

8

I used to get affected by the same friends too, but then learned to stop putting disappointing people on a pedestal, thinking they do the same, and rely on them for emotional support and wellbeing which was always one way.

Big hugs. Relate to that so very painfully. I still feel pangs of sadness over the loss of an entire friend circle over covid; I shared lots of values and experiences with them and we had lots of great times, but I could've kicked myself for being so reliant on them for that support/wellbeing when it turns out that they were supremely unwilling/unable to show up in the ways that mattered most when the chips were down.

It was impossible to have an honest conversation because they would beat themselves up in a show of contrition and shame but not actually acknowledge any issues and work on them (or anticipate them better). I know a lot of that is a trauma response from them but after a certain point it just wasn't healthy to be around any more and I couldn't handle continuing to be the only one willing to forgive and accommodate.

I'm still in the phase of not really having made any new friends on that level, though I certainly have strengthened my friendship with a couple of other rock-solid people in my life and it's made me so much more grateful for them.

6

Hard relate. I’ve learned to try and be happy in my own company rather than deal with that, but humans are a social animal and those behaviours are so pervasive

Mimi is such a brave little kitty.

Yesterday, wifey noticed that Mimi seemed to be winking a lot. After some further inspection, she noticed that one of Mimi's eyelids was swollen.

So today, Mimi went on a big trip to the vets to see Dr Paul.

Dr Paul took a look at her eye, and thankfully there's no scratches on her eyeball.

Because it's one eye that was swollen, it's unlikely to be an allergic reaction, and our babies are all indoor cats.

Most likely, it was that some individual — who may or may not be named Spunky or Snowy — got a little rough while playing with Mimi overnight.

After an anti-inflammatory injection and some eyedrops, Miss Mimi was sent home.

She's now happily playing in a box.

10

@CEOofmyhouse56 She was so brave when I took her down to see Dr Paul though.

Sat still while Dr Paul weighed her, did the eye drops, and gave her an injection.

He was very impressed.

No way would I be that brave in the same circumstances 😂

In answer to your enquiry, Sir, I am happy to see that you've had the good sense to hire Mr Fluffybutt. He is and will be an excellent employee.

11

@Thornburywitch @bacon To all whom this may concern,

I am writing to express my strong and sincere recommendation for Mr. Simon Fluffybutt as a candidate for this position.

In his previous role, Simon unlocked substantial value, leading both directly and indirectly to a strengthening of the sales pipeline, while leveraging and fully capitalising on synergistic new opportunities for revenue growth.

In a dynamic, fast-paced, lean, and agile environment, Simon demonstrates a natural flair for delivering outcomes while expertly liaising across multiple internal and external stakeholder groups with divergent expectations, while diligently managing competing priorities.

He is both a dynamic self-starter who thrives when taking ownership of projects to drive strategic results, as well as a collaborative team player who works efficiently towards shared goals and KPIs.

I have full confidence in Simon's extensive expertise, knowledge, and skillset, which will contribute meaningfully and substantively to the long-term growth of your organisation going forward.

If you have any questions in regards to this letter, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Kindest regards,

AJ

8
aussie.zone

First 40 minutes of work today really soured my tone for the week. Had a chat with my boss and he felt the same.

Reason - we have some team members who are getting a bit too big for their britches, and causing a bit of friction. One particular person cannot stop themselves from interrupting others when talking. Happens daily, they have been reprimanded and it still happens. I think we're getting close to an HR chat or a director telling them to pull their heads in.

8
dumblederpreply
aussie.zone

Talk to them like a four year old and say its rude to interrupt you need to wait your turn?

Make an office talking stick thing. When they interrupt the person holding the stick gets to shake it at them, something tambourine-esque.

Start interruption tipping, where everyone goes into a draw for how far into the meeting until this person will interrupt, when the condition goes off, everyone slaps $5 on the table and says who won. Danny had three minutes, everyone hands Danny a fiver.

Move to zoom meetings and mute them.

Sponsor everyone in the office to learn sign language except them.

6

They have been reminded not to do it numerous times. Falls on deaf (or just stupid) ears. I have muted them on virtual meetings and will continue to do so

There’s set standards about how loud fire alarms must be to be compliant. It’s meant to be really loud and piercing because it’s supposed to wake people up and be something that’s hard to ignore. Hope you feel a bit better today and that your arm settled down too.

I am listening to Magic Pill for the second time ( book about ozempic weight loss drug ) https://magicpillbook.com/

here's what I think after listening one time, it's a great drug that actually works and it's best used short term as an aid to tackling the psychology of eating and resetting eating habits.

I would totes take it if it were available here but it being Australia drug companies can't be bothered and we have an over cautious government . I would even considering going to Canada to get it if possible.

Why is it good? It actually helps people regain health and reduces risks of age and weight related illnesses. This is proven .

One of the scary things I learnt in the book is how fake nearly all manufactured food is.

eg, bought cheese cake is just emulsified milk products, added oils, sugars and thickeners and flavour. Home made I used ricotta and eggs and real lemons or cherries. Real pastry base too.

One is fake food with practically no positive nutritional value, the other is real food that has some nutrition but should still be eaten sparingly as it's high in calories.

The other sad thing is that the author's parents worked so hard they were too tired to cook healthy meals. They ate premade meals zapped in the microwave. I will not fault the parents, that fault is in the work that tired them out and the food they bought being misrepresented as being healthy .

5

Be careful with the food chain details, they vary wildly from country to countey.

US food manufacturing is insane at the best of times.

7
aussie.zone

I thought about ozempic. I decided to do it the hard way, but those extra benefits for heart health etc are really interesting.

I'd be keen just for those secondary effects.

3
Seagoon_reply
aussie.zone

Most people use it for ever because they also don't change their diet , they still eat the same crap just less of it, and don't exercise. Once they stop using ozempic they go back to eating more bad food.

I think using it as an aid to help develope new good habits or reset your body signals is the way.

80% of my diet calories are very good, home cooked food using real basic ingredients, I eat fresh fruit and vegetables everyday. It's that 20% of junk that's bad, bikkies, lollies, occasional desserts, fried food.

And the side effects, absolutely minimal and unproven . The side effects of obesity are guaranteed, debilitating and often fatal .

3

That makes sense. About 5 years ago I did the whole body transformation thing and it was great. But! It was too extreme and I ended up (also due to lockdown) putting back about 40% of what I lost. It can be really easy to get carried away with the whole gym/eating/aesthetics thing, almost to the point of giving oneself an eating disroder. This time I'm trying to be smart by offsetting the junk I eat with healthy main meals and not religeously counting calories.

3

Boogerman got me good.

Best part of wfh i'm huddled on couch with doona, cats and comfort tv and a loose eye on work emails with volume turned up so i can nap.

Listening to Magic Pill and the author describes animal testing of effects of different foods on appetite. I can't help thinking of Ted Cat.

When Ted Cat came here I noticed he was quite short for a Nieb breed cat and he was ravenous. He would not stop eating. He would attack anyone who came near him. He only wanted packet food with gravy and would leave good food uneaten. He wanted to eat 3 times a day.

Over the months I slowly changed his diet. One packet food and some fresh food. He rejected good food and would get angry. I put out a huge bowl of crunchies to last for days, he ate it all in a day, his poor tummy was distended. He now eats fresh Fussy Cat meat and Fussy Cat kangaroo crunchies only. I now measure it all out carefully, I gave him a slow eating bowl so he wouldn't wolf it down then start on Bill's food. I fed him outdoors.

Then I got sick and husband fed the boys, they got unlimited food. Ted just went crazy and ate and ate, he's now on a diet and it's working.

The positive thing is that Ted Cat now eats healthier food , not packet food with gravy. I don't know if he would choose gravy if offered. That's the thing, Ted Cat doesn't need will power, he doesn't have the ability to make choices between foods, for him it's eat or have nothing

5
Cendanareply
aussie.zone

so he wouldn’t wolf it down then start on Bill’s food

I need that and a microchip activated feeder. Our tortoiseshell does just that - inhale the wet food, then barges through the tuxedo's, before finally stealing the fluffy one's.

3

My family had a dog like that, in her previous home she’d been constantly underfed.

Once she had regular access to food she couldn’t adjust and believe there would be enough/that it would be consistently available so she had some food issues with overeating. Unfortunately a common issue in rescue :(

1

@Seagoon_ Feeling really annoyed at an acting middle manager at our workplace right now.

He's terrible at communicating. He refuses to listen to people. He makes decisions and orders people to do stuff without asking anyone if the thing he wants to do is even possible.

There's a whole string of bad decisions as a result, and everyone else is left to clean up his mess afterwards.

For example, there's an event that was scheduled on a particular date. An email was sent out to the people (outside the organisation) who are likely to attend.

Before that email was sent, he decided to postpone it. Just he didn't let anyone know until after the emails were sent.

Another example. One of my colleagues was told she had to drop everything to find leads for a new product that he decided to launch in two weeks. He then blamed her for not coming up with enough leads.

He's decided the IT team needs to roll out a new automated reporting system right now. The IT department has already said it's not adding any features to that system because they're getting rid of it in the next year or so. They don't answer to him, and will just refuse to do it. So there's a whole series of meetings now planned because he's insisting that it has to happen.

There's also a whole marketing campaign that the marketing team thinks is a stupid idea that won't work, because they tried it last year and it didn't work. He's insisting they do it anyway.

And there's a whole string of decisions like this.

The thing is, I'm not sure he's aware at just how demotivating his unique management style is to those around him.

Sorry for the rant, I'm just feeling really frustrated right now.

5

@StudChud Even though I'm not directly in his department (thankfully!), I am affected by his decisions.

I mentioned to a colleague today: "Have you noticed <manager> has a habit of springing decisions on people, and not taking things into consideration even if they have been explained to him?"

She said yes, and gave me some of her own examples.

So it has been noticed by people — although unfortunately the people who he answers up to are new in the role as well.

Earlier today, I was in a meeting with <Manager> and some people from the business sales team.

Marketing had wanted to run an end of financial year promotion for business customers.

<Manager> overruled them and decided that they should instead run a discount campaign aimed at consumers. (It's a small team that doesn't have the resources to do both.)

(This despite the fact that he said himself a couple of months ago that he wanted to focus more on business sales.)

(<Manager's> idea is the stupid campaign they don't want to do.)

I explained to the sales team that because the consumer discount campaign was happening — the one marketing doesn't want to do — there wouldn't be a promotional campaign for business.

This apparently hadn't occurred to <Manager>, even though it was clearly explained to him. (I was in the meeting when it happened.)

"Well, ummmm, maybe we can do both?"

And then this afternoon I had a meeting with a colleague. One of <Manager's> brilliant ideas is for her to cross-promote a product from <Manager's> division with a product from another division.

"Okay, well before you go too deep into this, you might just want to be aware that the IT systems in <Manager's division> aren't integrated with the systems from the other division."

She gives me a mildly horrified look. What do you mean not integrated, she asks?

"Many years ago, <Manager's division> used to be a completely separate organisation. So it has its own separate IT systems. That means its own customer database, its own accounting package, its own content management system. Many of the platforms are different to the ones the rest of the organisation uses.

"*Nothing* is integrated.

"IT is planning to eventually move everything across to the same systems, but in the meantime any data that you want to move from one system to the other has to be done manually.

Her face dropped as she realised her workload was now at least triple what she had expected. Why didn't <Manager> tell me any of this?

And that's a very good question...

3

sounds like a relic from the old organisation... this is the problem when mergers/takeovers/restructures happen and there's too much autonomy left in the wrong places.
