It's not hot take Tuesday but here's my hot take anyway: eggplant is terrible. How do people like it?!? It's so soggy and bland no matter how you cook it 🤢
Best reframe the discussion to 'creamy and delicious'. Does absorb other flavours well. I quite like eggplant cut in 12 or so lengthwise wedges, then the cut surfaces dipped in lemon juice and dusted with seasoned flour, then sprayed with a bit of oil and then put under the grill cut sides up. Leaving the skin on keeps each wedge together, so you get the creamy inside and the crunchy coating. A hawt dipping sauce goes well with this. Sort of eggplant chips.
sitting and thinking on the train about who I am, who I wanna be and where I'm (metaphorically) headed. Anyone else feel like there is all these versions of you crowding around almost like ghosts all trying to fit into the one vessel?
Yep, all the time. Lifelong condition. I blame being a Gemini. I forget which philosopher said 'Do I contradict myself? I contain multitudes' but it is so bloody true.
Tragedy has struck the Raven household. My faithful beaters will beat no more. Over 20 years of faithful service, rest well my friends you will be missed.
Ours died last year. I wouldn't have it. I took them apart, cracked out the soldering iron and repaired them. I broke the slow/fast switch and the blitz button in the process, but they work again.
Good thing, as they have mixing bowl attachment and it'd be so wasteful to throw the whole thing away over an internal switch wearing out.
Hot take Wednesday. When a recipe says to scoop out the seeds in tomatoes or cucumbers for a salad or whatever. No. I paid for those seeds. They are going in. I don't care if it makes it soggy. Plus that's extra work that I'm not prepared to commit to.
Fully agree. I quite like it grated with a squeeze of lime/lemon on it and some black pepper. It has a unique sulfur laden burn but is also cool and refreshing. Peeling the turnip reduces the burn.
When I was a kid you used to be able to get a tray of soup/stew mixed veg from Safeway. I used to eat the celery, someone else the carrot. I can't remember what else was in there but all that would be left would be the turnip and the parsnip. No one wanted them.
I have successfully aquired new bulbs for my headlights, after realising one of them was out last night. If I can now motivate myself to actually install them this may be my car's shortest cyclops period yet. Usually I am terrible at getting myself organsed to actually buy the bulbs.
As a bonus Supercheap Auto is next to NQR, so I have also replenished my supplies of cheese, butter and fish. Also a couple of bonus meat pies.
I do agree with recycling in principle and I do my bit regarding aluminium, glass and cardboard but everything else is just not recycled by industry or gov.
my bit for the environment is to consume less, a lot lot less,
I'm also trying to make choices that result in less waste, eg, a cardboard box is better than a plastic bottle
my bit for the environment is to consume less, a lot lot less,
This is the most important bit of anything for the environment. We're so primed by our society to consume, to want more. It's almost rebellious to go against it and deliberately consume less.
In the continuing saga of trying to get the business verifed on google, we finally got the video call working, but the banner signage I had was deemed inadequate and 'you need a permanent sign'.
I explained we never had one for privacy reasons (it was Mum's house after all) and I'd be moving mid this month anyway.
So more or less back to square one. At least I got some clearing and sorting done.
Literally one of my fav sites. I was reading it back when they just started the competition for the 1000 series. And to see it grow the way it has is just incredible. There are so many amazing entries, tales, GoIs.
DjKaktus remains my favourite writer, especially their newest set of SCPs tying that flesh cult in with demons and folklore.
The Stairs (in the 000s iirc) was one of the first I read and it creeped me the fuck out. The Old Man as well. And anything that involves SCPs and archeology, hell yeah dig up that creepy-ass temple in Egypt/Persia/Mesopotamia and then make up a bunch of rituals from all the Abrahamic faiths to keep the "scary unknown" contained. Right up my alley.
Sorry for gushing! I just get too excited about that site 😬😅
What are your favourite ones???
I remember when 179 came out and I followed it on and off for years then lost track. Came back and was blown away by how far the whole thing has come! Series 1 was sooooo good, but the intense and really long Kaktus ones blew me away as well.
DJKaktus and Harry Blank are probs my favorites currently. Harry Blank has a cannon for site 54 which is really, really good. Just finished it the other night and it was basically a novel.
My personal favorite has to be the one where it's a Sopranos DVD, and you can keep going into TV screens in the show. So they zoom into a TV in the Sopranos house, then zoom into another TV in the show that's on and so on and so forth. It's really, really good. SCP 2614.
Oh and the basketball game, SCP 1733. Read it tonight if you get a chance. Actually scared me.
My other favorite is probably the whole thing about the fairy queen that gave her heart to the SCP1000 children of the night. It's a Kaktus one that's really epic.
The canon ones can be really good too, but problem is a lot of them are unfinished, so you get really into it, then it ends on a cliff hanger.
Oh god, 1733 😭 I'd forgotten until I went to the page and saw the picture. Never play that again, every request for testing should be denied.
Alright, I don't recall reading 2614, but I now have a severe case of the heebie jeebies. Utterly creep-inducing.
And now I'm back to reading this site, hooked again. I like series 1 just because they are quite contained, but the later series' where an over-arching lore is established over multiple SCPs and tales is so damn addicting.
It was just afternoon and nearly home from the shops. A ten minute drive. I was thinking about nothing in particular when suddenly flames erupted from the engine bay. The smoke was whispering out of the air con vents as I was maintaining a reasonable speed. Should I ditch it or press on?
The car was still operational but the smoke was getting thick inside the cabin. I didn’t want to lose her and only the fire brigade could help me now.
I pressed on. Faster now. Flame wasn’t visible past the smoke. I needed a phone urgently, to call the fire brigade . I felt like a WW2 fighter pilot limping back to base after being shot to shit.
I had to ditch.
Brigade arrived but it was just too late. Write off and move on.
::: spoiler Cat rambles
Did a lot of the odd cat jobs last night. Melbcat's ears were so grubby... I had to do a wash, wipe them out, and then even more wax/dirt came out with a second wash. There's still crevices I couldn't quite clean out. Not sure if it's just because I'd been slacking or if there's still an issue with her ears. Perhaps an infection? Maybe older cats get more buildup or need more help grooming?
I'll get them checked when she goes for her next Solensia which is soon. Today I also need to clean her eyes and give her the flea drops.
:::
Not sure why it's so hard to do art when I want to. It's hard to be alive and do anything really. I have to fight against so much physical and mental stuff to even have a hobby. I'm even taking high dose vitamin D supplements.
I'm so wired and tired from events of the last three days. So many thoughts going round my head and big feelings. At least it's not the debilitating kind of tiredness, I still had enough go in me to whip up upma, dal tadka, and a guar bean + carrot sabji. And clean up all the myriad dishes and the kitchen!
Tomorrow will be a long day too, as I have a big dinner right after work with lots to talk about. Need to start early so I can take the car and leave work early + directly... Sigh
Ahem, re: mystery liquid. This is probably a random gift from the cosmos, but MIGHT be related to a recent flyby by Cthulhu. If so, washing the liquid off with a mild dish soap solution followed by your preferred exorcism ritual will probably take care of the problem. It's a good idea to remove any other vegetables from your fridge before trying this - potatoes have been known to grow eyes if you know what I mean.
That hypothesised, but very likely exists, Planet 9 (sorry Pluto). The one with the massive elliptical orbit of Sol the approx size of Neptune, is such a cool theory. Evidenced by other Kuiper Belt objects behaving in a way that would make sense if there was a huge planet we haven't found that pulls on them.
My partner and I were thinking of names it could be called, in the recurring theme of Roman gods (sorry Uranus, they should have called you Ouranos). I think Terminus is a great name for it, the god of boundary stones.
That's my entry for naming it. Terminus. Besides, it's a cool af name imo
I try but it is also extremely gross lol. You can pop the keys off and clean it like that, just make sure you note where the keys are meant to go so you can put it back together.
At my old job (call centre with Computershare) one of my managers had a skin issue? Dandruff maybe? Anyway, he moved elsewhere in the business and I took his desk and computer. There was a thin layer of white dandruff skin all over the keyboard. So I used the sticky part of the office post it notes and cleaned it like that, while trying not to reach so I didn't embarrass him. 🤢🤢
We had a lovely lady who used to like to eat servo kranskys wrapped in pastry at her desk every morning, along with a collection of other flaky things (admittedly her homemade sausage rolls are missed!). Occasionally I would need to use her work station when she wasn’t in and every time I went to TOWN on everything with disinfectant wipes, sprays, air freshners. She loved always coming back to a clean office, but goddamn did it get disgusting again within a day or two,
Her replacement has beard dandruff. A lot of beard dandruff.
Seems like there's a real shake up afoot in the industry I work in... processing interesting news about a big player taking over a few smaller firms. Tried the paramount indian place. It was nice, but for 15 bucks vs 20 at Chilli India I think I'd take Chilli India.
Also everyone seemed to have like sweet and sour pork or honey chicken or whatever with plain rice, but the only place I could find (on the left as your walked in) that had the deep fried meat/sauce combo had fried rice? Am I missing something?
Indian. yeah the line at Ceylon was a turn off. Couldnt even see the food. Shame about the no dumplings thing. I also recon I'd make a friggin killing opening a toastie shop in there.
Ah yeah, the indian joint is okay, but definitely not the best curry place in the court. For dumplings it's hard to beat ShanDong Mama, but you need to go with a group. Getting one plate there isn't worth it.
Honestly try the Lankan joint next time if you can. The devilled chicken/fish are soooo good. Kottu rice as well.
What the others said about comparison measures. Coles probably did it differently deliberately…
It ends up cheaper delivered from [various] online Pet stores if you are in their free delivery zone and get the big bags.
-Barn has a $0.95/L thing on now.
I hate it when they randomly do different units of measure, or put unit pricing for different quantities -_- Genuinely didn't pick that up for once.
Their non-member price is $1.17 for the 30l and I don't often shop with Barn due to their prices on other stuff, so I might just stick with the supermarket when I get the cheap delivery slots or Circle (as I get free postage over a limit I always hit) or Budget Pet Products. But thanks
Been a bit lost and depressed lately (see spoiler), so could do with a bit of distracting/cheering-up.
::: spoiler Thanks to uni shenanigans.
Spent somewhere close of 3 months of back and forth, only to find out that my WAM is 0.25% too low to qualify for the honours programme I was hoping for/need to do for job/further study reasons.

It's not hot take Tuesday but here's my hot take anyway: eggplant is terrible. How do people like it?!? It's so soggy and bland no matter how you cook it 🤢
I like eggplant. Moussaka. Babaganoush. In curries. Yum.
+1
I can’t eat them, they make me want to throw up :/
Just like many other foods....it's dependent on how you prep it, cook it and serve it.
Seasonings are your friends.
Dad used to slice it, bread it and shallow fry it. I remember enjoying it, but, then again most anything is good when fried innit.
Brinjals? Yuuuuummmm…
Another vote for eggplant being vile
Best reframe the discussion to 'creamy and delicious'. Does absorb other flavours well. I quite like eggplant cut in 12 or so lengthwise wedges, then the cut surfaces dipped in lemon juice and dusted with seasoned flour, then sprayed with a bit of oil and then put under the grill cut sides up. Gets the go ahead in a fresh thai curry but the next day it is mush.

I think mine might have a broken/worn gear. The motor still works and they sort of still turn but slowly and with little power.
So I don't qualify for the Sydney role because they require someone in office once a week.
Got some really useful feedback and info from the recruiter though, so that's something.
Another interview tomorrow at 2pm. Not super excited about this one, but if it comes through so be it.
Hot take Wednesday. When a recipe says to scoop out the seeds in tomatoes or cucumbers for a salad or whatever. No. I paid for those seeds. They are going in. I don't care if it makes it soggy. Plus that's extra work that I'm not prepared to commit to.
it's good food , plus it's nice on a hot day
Save more time and just throw out the whole cucumber. Genuinely the worst vegetable ever.
I believe that dishonour belongs to the chokoe
I nominate the turnip. There's a reason why it gets pickled. Because it's weird.
Turnip isn’t the most exciting vegetable but it’s certainly not the worst
Fully agree. I quite like it grated with a squeeze of lime/lemon on it and some black pepper. It has a unique sulfur laden burn but is also cool and refreshing. Peeling the turnip reduces the burn.
Tzaziki. Pickles. You shut your whore mouth.
Cucumbers are just expensive crunchy water, does absolutely nothing for me. Delete this vegetable
No way. Cucumber soup on a hot day is the best. Cucumber, yogurt, mint, bit of water and salt & pepper. For those days when it's too hot to chew.
Try this:
Yogurt
Salt
Squeeze of Lime
Black pepper
diced tomatoes (optional)
Grated cucumber (into thin strips)
Give it a nice whirl and it makes an excellent side on a warm day!
I like that!
Correction: celery is the worst vegetable ever. I will die on this hill.
Nope. ‘Tis the perfect vehicle for conveying peanut butter into one’s mouth
Apple, cheese, & peanut butter!
If I ate peanut butter I would maybe, just maybe, feel differently. But I don't.
When I was a kid you used to be able to get a tray of soup/stew mixed veg from Safeway. I used to eat the celery, someone else the carrot. I can't remember what else was in there but all that would be left would be the turnip and the parsnip. No one wanted them.

No, Ringwood. A smaller store, but convenient location.
In Ringwood they hang out with a Vinnie's op shop, so its the ideal cheapskate shopping place.
I happened to be in the kitchen washing my dishes at 5 pm just now. The cleaner came in and emptied the organic waste bin into the general waste bin.
I'm scandalised. If the organic waste bin weren't there, I wouldn't think much of it. But to have it be there and be a total lie isn't cool. 🤬

You definitely need the sour cream. Absolutely. For sure. It'll be a worthy mission!
Fuck
sour cream on enchiladas, on any Mexican food, takes it to the next level of deliciousness
and there is lactose free sour sour cream too
I have so many of those tasty chillies I should be making lots of Mexican recipes
I went and got it and I got corn chips too to go with the salsa so it all worked out in the end.
I dont have sour cream with mine for what its worth.

Just looking at the Coles listing... it mentions 21L. So probably $1.09/1L.
Amazon suggests that the 24L is about 8kg, approx $3.75/kg.
Huh, well spotted. For some reason I didn't see that. :/ Or perhaps my brain glossed over it, not realising there was a big difference.
can't really compare them, one is kg and one is L
Three thirty-itis strikes again
What the others said about comparison measures. Coles probably did it differently deliberately… It ends up cheaper delivered from [various] online Pet stores if you are in their free delivery zone and get the big bags.
But thanks
Anyone got some pet pictures to spare?
Been a bit lost and depressed lately (see spoiler), so could do with a bit of distracting/cheering-up.
::: spoiler Thanks to uni shenanigans. Spent somewhere close of 3 months of back and forth, only to find out that my WAM is 0.25% too low to qualify for the honours programme I was hoping for/need to do for job/further study reasons. :::
