Well, Meta Went and Blocked The Tyee. That’s a Big Deal | The Tyee
Question: I'm guessing this blocking is all based off of IP address, can anyone confirm?
If so, does a VPN with (say) a US endpoint get around it?

People shouldn't be getting their news from places that manipulate algorithms to prevent you from seeing a full spectrum of information anyways.
This is a good thing for Canadians, even if it seems inconvenient ATM.
I agree. My first reaction when it broke about them blocking news was 'I don't see them or use them as a news aggregator anyway, so who cares'; let them take their click bait promotion and dwell time algorithms elsewhere.
Right? I got Facebook years ago to see pictures of my friends’ cats and tell fart jokes, not to argue about the news.
They aren't blocking you from going to Canadian news sites, they're blocking you from posting links to them, because they don't want to pay the news sites for their content. They probably have a list of domains that are blocked; I doubt they're blocking particular IPs.
The best thing you can do to support The Tyee is subscribe to their newsletter with the link above and, if you can afford it, support them financially. This is all about denying the news sites advertising revenue from the increased traffic that major platforms provide.
Just subscribe to the Tyee as it is free.
lol, you can get around it by typing the address into the URL bar, or even just clicking a bookmark. No VPN required!
Canada needs a domestic social media service. That much is clear. The only question is how in the world it will compete.
I downloaded a Canadian news app after RIF went down, it has the most vile comment section I have ever seen.
Ask yourself who would comment on a news app instead of Reddit. The answers write themselves.
Care to elaborate? I feel like I'm missing something
They're typically less tech savvy, older, and trend Conservative. They're also the segment of that demographic that wants to write comments (i.e. they have stronger/more extreme beliefs)
It's likely to be the more extreme rural Conservatives.
It wouldn't and if by some miracle it started to someone would purchase it.
government funding? Canada has a pretty good track record of separating journalism from the government
lmao! Who do you propose to run it? The Liberals? LOL The Conservatives? Even bigger LOL
The only people we can trust less than industry to handle this is anybody we might elect to government.
I mean... the CBC is doing pretty alright for itself.
Should be able to. That's kinda the point of most VPNs
Although I just saw this.
