@Cendana @Seagoon_ @melbourne Wifey has a habit of eating in bed, and then just leaving the bowl on the bed head instead of taking it back into the kitchen.

(I've given up asking at this point โ€” she never listens.)

Anyway.

One night a few weeks ago, after I'd already done the dishes, she decided to eat a bowl of ice cream in bed. And, as usual, left the bowl on the bed head.

Sometime around 3am, I'm awakened by a noise.

Bump! Splat! Scream!

I switch on the light.

There's poor wifey with a bowl on her side of the bed, covered in the melted ice cream at the bottom of the bowl.

Mr Snowy was laying down on the spot on the bed head where the bowl had been moment earlier.

I just looked at her for a moment and deadpanned: "I did say to put the bowls back in the kitchen when you're done with them."

๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜ just got another insight

2

I like planning and organising sometimes, but when things aren't going smoothly and involve other peoples' trust and large amounts of money it takes a lot out of me and it takes a while to recover the energy.

I also find it harder to enjoy planning and organising when it's just for myself and I can't show off or do something for someone else. I seem to be very uninterested in my own well being sometimes

Well here's an ANZAC story from my fam.

WW2 my gramps went to tubruk as a doctor. Aus captured a bunch of Italians late jan '41. The Aus docs and Italian docs that they had captured apparently really hit it off, let them out of captivity for a bit, drank / smoked together and shared advice on battlefield medicine.

Gramps was very quiet about his experience but to my old man he did say a few stories (which to me are only second hand).

He never marched in the parade, never watched it apparently. The blinds would come down when us kids asked about it.

So I think today means something different to everyone.

11

I always reflect on my grandparents stories.

Grandma's barn (Europe) was hit by an errant shell back in 1941 a few minutes before she went to milk the cows. Livestock died, she survived cause her parents were giving her a taking to for sneaking off with a guy....my grandpa

Same grandpa was captured by the germans twice in a span of 4 weeks, and managed to escape both times.

Neither ever elaborated on the stories and we never pressed them.

3

@Catfish @Seagoon_ @melbourne If you ever have to cook for a vegetarian or a vegan, a good substitute for mince is the textured vegetable protein from Woolies with Massel chicken.

For those who've never used it, you find the TVP as a dry powder in the health food aisle.

Basically, you mix it up as per the packet instructions, but add in one teaspoon of Massel, plus herbs, spices, and seasonings. (I usually use a pinch of cumin, pepper, and paprika.)

Best of all, because it's dry, it will happily live in your cupboard for an extended period of time.

1

Atleast it's real chicken. Sorry guys, Massel should be renamed Clayton's. I'm an Oxo gal all the way. I like flavour.

@wscholermann @Seagoon_ my sinuses cleared up when I stopped living in Melbourne most of the time - I still visit very regularly, but I live rurally and the difference has been dramatic. Not tropical, far from it - but I'm originally from Perth, and I developed a few different health issues when I moved to Melbourne. I think it's unfortunately got pretty poor air quality generally compared to many other places in Australia.

4

@luciedigitalni @kudra @wscholermann @Seagoon_ The plane trees makes a lot of sense.

Every time I'm in Melbourne, within a couple of days, I get hayfever. Then when I fly up to Sydney, it clears up within a day or two.

I would be seriously surprised if Sydney has significantly less air pollution than Melbourne.

Sydney has the Blue Mountains, the Royal National Park, and Ku-ring-gai Chase surrounding it on three sides.

So just by process of elimination, that leaves the temperature and pollen from some local plant as potential culprits.

It's possible to froth the milk in the plunger once you've made your coffee then rinsed it out and added warm milk. A lot more work there.

Save up for a frother. They're about $30. Much easier and quicker to measure ingredients.

::: spoiler musings This show is heavy. Each episode leaves you thinking why is he letting this happen to himself. But doing things you know are bad for yourself, day after day, maybe for years, is something that happens to people. And then the shame of the self destruction is intense, so itโ€™s rare for people to talk about. I have never seen it depicted with such rawness. Baby reindeer nails it.

I made a casserole recently and it was pretty good.. none left for the freezer kind of good. So I was going to make another and bought stuff for that. Miniest wanted me to experiment with a chicken and broccoli casserole, so I bought stuff for that too. With today and tomorrow off I'd have plenty of time, I reasoned. Came home yesterday to a freezer which contained a goat's leg, a whole skinned rabbit and some duck breasts. Mr P was so proud, you'd think he hunted them himself (a friend of his has dropped it round). No room for casserole ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. Also not a fan of duck or rabbit. Don't know a thing about goat. If anyone has any tried and true family ways of cooking a whole goat's leg I will need to hear them please!

4
imoldgreeegreply
aussie.zone

I have been told that you can use goat anywhere you would use lamb but slow cook it. I have made goat curry (a massaman type) but don't have the recipe anymore

5

No it's more "Curry disguises the taste of goat well" :)

6

Slow cooking goat is def the best for a 1st time as it's usually pretty light on for internal fat. Go heavy on the flavourings too. The texture is lovely - a little bit more chewy than lamb but still succulent. I like it baked middle eastern style in yoghurt with spices and almond meal mixed in to the yog. Slow cook to begin with, but for the last hour take the lid off and baste with the liquid which forms a lovely creamy/spicy crust around the leg. The meat inside will be incredibly tender and juicy too.

Rabbit is nice when done well, but it's very easy to stuff it up. The meat is very lean, and has a distinctive flavour. I like to joint it, wrap each piece in bacon/prosciutto and then stew it slowly in diced tomato (tinned) with sauteed onion etc. The bacon makes the meat go a nice pink color - if you don't wrap it in bacon or something like it the meat cooks up grey and does not look nice. The I slip the meat from the bones and use as a pie filling - rabbit pie is food of the gods. I would not recommend roasting it to begin with - very hard to get the timing right and you have to baste every few minutes it feels like. Wild rabbit can be spiced up to the nines and maybe should be. Domestic rabbit is a bit more forgiving.

Duck is a whole other ball game - maybe go asian as there's a lot of recipies from those cuisines.

3

Iโ€™ve had goat before, and I found the flavour a bit too strong for my liking. Itโ€™s like lamb, but stronger. Agree slow cook would be the way to go, with some strong seasonings to balance it out. Never had rabbit. Duck Iโ€™ve never cooked myself but had it at restaurants and itโ€™s delicious. Recipes to try might be Chinese style or go fancy with a duck lโ€™orange.

2

It took a while, but the cat has finally discovered that cheese is Good For Cats. Little bugger tried to pinch my smoked cheddar (and gave it a good lick). Luckily he's much prettier than he is smart, it's not hard to outwit him.
