E: also, holy COW the Medicare safety net is amazing. 475 psychiatrist appt, would've been ~265 out of pocket with the normal rebate. Today the full safety net rebate came through - I've paid $46 out of pocket for a 90 minute consult. That's less than 10% of the total fee. Awesome.

I miss living in Melbourne. And there is so much more options for my little one. If (and when) I finish my education degree I'm going to seriously consider moving back. At least working in school I might avoid the ridiculous travel times like I had when I had to work in the city.

18

Haha, were in opposites here. My MIL is DESPERATE for us to sell and move to Launceston. And TBH, if I could find work it'd be a tempting proposition. I don't know why I life in Melbourne any more. Its great till you have to deal with the people. Heck even Drouin/Warragul is more tempting at this point.

8

@danwritesbooks @Thornburywitch where are you? I moved to La Trobe Valley a year ago and love it (though I still am back in the city every second week for work) and hope the local school stays open (heard rumours it might close) though once child is high school age will consider moving back for 5 years.

I have just spent way too long comparing electricity plans now that my Lumo contract is about to run out. Looks like I'll be moving from Lumo to Sumo for power, and to Alinta for gas. I hate that we have to contantly be doing this to get a decent price, and it sucks that the people who can't have to pay more. Why do we allow people who can't constantly stay on top of this sort of thing to be taken advantage of? It might be popular to call it a "lazy tax" but it is really an extra cost burden on the vulnerable.

14

Im currently jumping NBN provider every 6 months to get the best deal. its crazy, when you call them at the end of the 6 month deal they go "Oh we cant possibly match the price we've already been giving you!", ok well, someone else will so like, byeeeeee.

5
aussie.zone

yep, $475 a year just to have the electricity connected. The impact of time of use pricing is interesting too - I save a few hundred dollars a year by having time of use instead of a flat rate. One with demand pricing - time of use, plus more expensive over summer - was also a close one. I might revisit the idea after summer, it could be worth changing to it for winter but if we have a hot summer and I use more air conditioning it would be expensive.

2
aussie.zone

Are you me? I got the email from Lumo last week saying my current rates will go up in August.. spent the morning trying to compare different ones and signed up to AGL as they offer the cheapest 😳

2

I think a lot of people changed to them just before the last major increase. They were cheaper and they locked the price until August - although at the time I was more concerned about the gas increasing.

It's not the high heels! Also a sore boob. I had a bra disaster when I ran for a tram. Was badly bruised from a pinch and tore my underboob. Had to use savlon and dressings for a week. The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them.
To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.
To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.

And yes, I was channelling Zaphod, I love the Hitchhiker series, I have them all and read them multiple times hehehe

Hard to feel sorry for Actors in this cost of living crisis. I know its more about the writers, and TBH larger issues in general. but this is capitalism. Its a system BUILT to exploit workers. The SAG is more than just the big-name celebs that come to mind when we think of "actors/actresses". It also covers all the extras and up-and-coming talent who aren't powerful enough to have negotiating power. One of the causes behind the strike are the parasites wanting to pay extras a day's work ($187) to come in and get a full body scan done so they can continue to use their likeness in perpetuity.

15

Yeah, obviously you can't feel sorry for the big name actors like Meryl Streep or Leonardo DiCaprio. But the actors who have to be on multiple shows or movies per day, per week just to break even. There's an actor on a show (I forgot the name P Nation? I could be wrong) who got cheques in the mail from SAG and the royalties don't even make $10USD. Like, yes, obviously the big name actors who weren't out striking with the writers, sure. But the smaller ones, the extras, the ones who are trying to get even a speaking role, I do sympathise with them.

I also obviously sympathise with the writers, as someone who is a writer myself, their concerns are 100% valid. Especially with AI, the amount of stories coming out of publishing magazines who have to shut down submissions because so many dickheads tried to get their story written by ChatGT and whatever else AI out there is staggering, so much that it affects writers who have never been published, or like me, have only been published in a few things here and there.

6

Understand that. But this is the way its been for years. They've all been fine with the struggling actors living paycheck to paycheck for generations. NOW they care? Great. But like, where was that 10-20 years ago?

3
aussie.zone

So they're organising boycotts and funding more union movements too right?

4
aussie.zone

[Anakin Skywalker face]

In all seriousness, basically the strike stops actors from promoting their work as well as just not working. So They can't be in press junkets, they can't even go to San Diego Comic Con next week, and they can't promote whatever thing they're in on their social media account.

One or both of the cats chewed my keyboard cable through. I semi fixed it but just went and bought a cheap bluetooth keyboard. I was out for many hours and they were bored. They are not fooled by the birds youtubes anymore. This mean I'm finally going to have to put all cables in under rugs and gaff others plus put the mouse away when I go out. The kitten got himself locked in the closet for a little while and mumma was scratching at the door. She's so protective and knows how to communicate with me through her movements. It's pretty special. Two months with the little darlings and I'm loving them very much at this stage. Crazy cat lady I'm becoming. New work is better than expected and I can leave it at work.

Still haven't heard confirmation from my old manager which is par for the course. Just terrible at communication, but always a fucking know it all. I'll escalate it to his group manager on Monday, if not. He'll have had all weekend by then. Stupid cunt. Most spineless piece of shit I've ever had the displeasure of working with. Sleazy, lazy and badly trained. Nuff said. I've decided I will got through with some further action against them as well but I'm not sure exactly what, work safe wil be called first anyway. Artists don't have a very good union but I have no desire to let them get away with the bullshit they get away and the constant sexual harrassment of staff is just fucking disgusting and I've always spoken out about it but no one else has. Everyone sat in my car talking about how bad it was, then did the same thing when it suited them or they were intox on booze and whatever other drugs they could find on the floor. Resentful it turns out I still am.

The only decision I have to make tonight is whether to wear my cute new little denim skirt over my leggings to the aa meeting or not. Tough call.

This place is soothing though and putting it down in writing is therapy indeed.

Again, thanks to all you good humans for endless words of support over the last year. Its been a challenging and rewarding year and I'm so glad I've had people I don't know all that well to journal with. You all rock and I wish we could all be in a room together right now so I could cry and tell you how much I've grown to love you all in person individually.

Seagoon's Friday night movie review. The First Man. Biography of Neil Armstrong.

I love this movie for the way it has rewritten the narrative of the first man to walk on the moon. For the first time in a movie it shows an astronaut as being an experienced intelligent, active pilot of a space vehicle, not just some person who relies on the engineers and mission control to get him there and back. Not just a warm body that could be replaced by a monkey.

And brave, so brave, even under terrifying and deadly situations he keeps his cool, uses his experience and intelligence and keeps trying.

Everything's ok, just some monitoring equipment and lines but it's fairly important because of her delicate health.

I am itching to try it out because I haven't been able to treat myself to any self indulgent food in awhile.

Also I want Dim Sims!

I don't mind so much what the meal is, but I'd like to eat it with a few famous historical figures. Can you arrange that?

Jesus did exist and I suppose his followers too. No potato in that meal unfortunately. Just body parts.

Botbot is ok, but resting after a long hard night. I have taken out some code changes that obviously were not working like I thought, and we will be going with the Strictly Ballroom "no new steps" mantra for a while.

I'm a winner, I'm a sinner, do you want my autograph 🎶

That driving rhythm and consonance of the lyrics is so good, one of my favourite songs.

You can have them dear daughter dear daughter.

You can have them for breakfast, lunch or tea. 🎶

Lordy today has been a long, intense, mad day. I'm just about ready to delete my brain. So many fires to put out. Oh and somehow the confidential chat I had with my senior colleague somehow turned out to be not so confidential and there's a long waffly email from my boss sent at 5pm on the dot that I'm not even going to bother looking at until Monday.

Only got back 20 minutes ago after yet more driving - thankfully much easier at night and with a full belly and a box of leftovers after serendipitously visiting a not particularly close auntie (I will never be too old to appreciate being sent home with a food packet like I'm still a broke uni student). And I got almost all my errands done.

And because I've been so behind on everything and these site visits were much more complicated than I thought, I need to work on Sunday AGAIN to get urgent deliverables across on Monday. Stg I'm going to be liberal with my timesheet so I can take next Friday off

Finally finished Arkham Origins after god knows how many years of owning the game. I adore the Arkham series and have 100% (or 120%) every other game multiple times but I could just never get into Origins enough to play it through. Done now though! Still have the collectables and DLC content to go through but that can be another day.

Now I don't know what to do with the rest of my weekend... hmm

Hey can someone help me out with this cunt. I don't even know what this is about.

Okay as much as I love the infrastructure upgrades to Melbourne, some small things have been ticking me off about it.

  • Multiple occasions where the the west gate bridge says two lanes have been blocked and to go 40km/h only to find out at the end that no work was being done at the bridge at that time (zero signs of any relevant vehicles)

  • Yesterday Williamstown rd inbound was blocked, google maps said it wasn't. Tiny detour sign to say take Grieve parade to come around. Millers rd (before Grieve parade) was actually open as a detour but no mention. Also zero detour signs before you hit Grieve parade exit. I suspect an uncountable number of drivers would have made a mistake there

  • Planning is unclear on PTV app with all the bus replacements, showing you train data on lines that aren't running. Google maps isn't any better either, giving you false information on what trains lines/stops actually available

This on top of an exhausting day was the cherry on top

Waiting on a work call from London before I can sign off for the week. I said 6pm Mel / 9am London. A Friday night work call is bad enough, now they're late. They've got until 6:15pm, then my working week is over. Too bad.

Damn Europe and their time zones. I prefer meeting with my US east coast colleagues vs Europe as it’s 7am but i got up at 6am today and just fired up the laptop before a shower and finished at 2pm today!

There's a YouTuber/writer I really like, I subscribed to her Patreon for a bit when we were getting the 1k a fortnight from Centrelink. She had like a monthly live discussion thing. Sometimes it was to talk about stuff, or it's coworking on things etc. However she lives in like England or Ireland and it was always at like their nighttime so thus it'd be like 5am - 7am and yeah no I'm not doing that. I had to end my support just because I wasn't using the benefits of what I was paying.
