I think it would be better to use the existing lemmy.ml community. You don't need to be on lemmy.ml to access it from world. Also it would help reduce the number of communities crammed into world, which is already overloaded with communities and users.
In my opinion, I don't like the idea of hosting the sublemmy on the lemmy.ml instance because in the end, you'll be under that instance's rules, and I've heard not-so-great things about them. I don't know why the instance owners would want to interfere with something like unixporn, but the idea that they could if they wanted to doesn't sit right with me.

I have lots of previous experiences with being inactive on reddit, so I should be perfect for the job! I also have a rust job, if that matters.

I don't know about the others either, but I guess we'll see if they move over here or stay on reddit. Reddit isn't dead yet either, and the reddit moderator team hasn't abandoned it. Only time will tell how the future looks.
