Am i missing out on anything other than porn by disabling NSFW on lemmy ?

Like am i missing out on big boy talk, gore, news etc that are adult ? Lemmy should seriously get a second filter like one that filters porn and the other that filters the rest if that is the case . Anyway what do you think ? Should news etc. be put behind nsfw ? I know i am straying far off the primary question but i am just talking casually and pulling it out of my ass as i go so thoughts ??

Edit : Is there any issue open in lemmy git for additional filters ??? If not can someone less lazy than me open one ?

Some people use NSFW tags as spoiler tags, so possibly. There's also varying definitions of NSFW (language, news articles that might be upsetting, etc).

Agree, there needs to be more granularity with post tagging.

Best compromise I've found is using a Lemmy UI that will blur NSFW stuff and let you click to reveal it. You can also block porn instances / communities if you don't want to fight through those (browsing /all on many instances is a minefield of porn lol).

You can also just add "lemmynsfw.com" to your blocked instances. 90% of the porn posts come from there.

(one of the older non-granular breakdowns was NSFW versus NSFL)

The problem with that distinction has always been advertisers. Letting users label content for adults is one thing, letting users specifically say their content involves disturbing content seems like a tacit approval of the behavior. Most advertisers have little interest in doing business with those platforms

Which is to say that lemmy might have an opportunity there because the platform is less ad centric!

It's a little naive to assume there's zero advertising on lemmy. Plus at some point someone has to pay to keep the lights on here, especially if we're going to continue growing. Historically we have seen that users don't like to pay for content and that advertisers will pay to be on the platform

I mean we're already discussing porn, so I'll just point out most of the "gonewild" posters are just advertising their onlyfans. Do you think every single article posted here is done so with pure intention? Several of the popular apps for lemmy have banner ads. I hate ads more than the average person (in real life not on lemmy) and even I acknowledge that you'll never escape them. Even when you totally ban them, they still will be present

I think we all know there's going to be a few bigger instances that people use for lemmy and those ones will eventually resort to ads to keep the lights on. Historically, that doesn't cause users to run away screaming and lemmy instances not federated with the most popular instances will face a tough uphill battle retaining users

It works* for peertube, one of the largest (if not the largest) instance is bestgore.

Just block the instance lemmynsfw.com and a few communities that pop up, then NSFW is usually not porn.

The Ukraine community has quite a lot of war footage that is tagged nsfw. The truly horrific stuff usually has 'nsfl' in the title, fyi.

12

That was the thing that came to mind when you asked because there's so much of it in one community.

But there are quite a number of videos posted that are marked NSFW because of cussing, too.

I absolutely support this. Idealy, we'd have 3 NSFW tags: One for porn, one for gore and one for everything else.

Side note: I'd also very much welcome regular tags for posts. Have you tried to search for a specific meme you saw a week or so ago? It is impossible. I'd love to have tags for different meme formats and templates, so you can more specifically search for an image post with an generic title.

This may come close to what OP is looking for as it includes reasons for the tags such as gore or spoiler

Some people randomly mark a thread NSFW for no particular reason. But, yes, porn.

I don't think that's how it works. It should only block the communities on those instances, but not the users. At least that's my understanding.

On the desktop web UI; how the hell do I actually block specific instances? Because I'd certainly like to figure that out. I've been using my adblock to remove anything hexbear or lemmynsfw - including users.

5

Settings > Blocks, instance blocks are at the bottom so if you already have a long block list you might have missed it down there.

Did anyone answer the question, OP, of if you are missing out on big boy talk or adult news?

Personally I would never like to see gore, but the other two things I just assumed are safe for work since they wouldn't contain images.

Are people on lemmy using NSFW as a way to hide discussions on sensitive topics or things like that?

3

Good to know.

For me that's not as big of an issue but it would be nice to have a tagging system that could separate those things.
