InterestingPotato640: I sleep like this too. If I eventually feel the need for more storage I'll just buy a new SD card and stick it on the proper hole. No need no mod the deck for me.

I have that exact SanDisk A1 and had been playing Elden Ring til for some reason the Deck decided it needed to be reformatted.
After that though I figured well might as well install it on my new Samsung A2, even though everyone seems to say it doesn't make a huge difference. It definitely does.
Elden Ring used to be a 2min to Main Menu and anywhere from 30sec-1.5min for ingame load times on the A1, To about 30 seconds to main menu and ingame loads have dropped in half.
Doesn't make a huge different on smaller or older games but damn does it make a huge difference on newer games
DarkOx55: Getting rid of the delta fan on my OG steam deck was 110% the right call. I didn’t break a SD card doing it thankfully but if I had it still would’ve been worth it.

AdmiralUpboat: I have ZERO plans on modding or even ever opening the case. I've also seen about a million pictures of broken sd cards so I still ended up putting a little square of pink duct tape over one of the back side screws with "SD" sharpied onto it.

Fitzftw7: I had my BIL install a 1TB internal when I first got it a year ago. Recently, I got a 1.5 tb microsd on top of it.
LilFuniAZNBoi: I have the OG 512 Steam Deck and just uninstalled the games I finished. I mostly play on the new desktop that I recently built with a 4080, so I mostly save my Steam Deck for trips. On top of that, I usually just have games I know I can play at a decent 60FPS, like indie games. I like my desktop to do all the heavy lifting for AAA games and FPSes.

DeamonLordZack: I think I'll sleep just as well with my modded steam deck that now has 3TB for my on the go option gaming or just handheld not docked mode. Just wait you'll change from Homer sleeping soundly with a MicroSD stuffed animal to Spongebob caving in grabbing a entire jug & chugging it down & you'll be looking for a larger better SSD. I only hope your stuffed MicroSD survives the event.

Altruistic-Azz: If you do drain the battery down to 25% first and put into battery storage mode before disconnecting the battery, I didn’t n thought I killed my deck when I popped in my new 2tb 2230.
Wouldn’t turn on at all for like 2 hours but I left it on charge for awhile n it came on by itself thank fuck lol.
Was it worth the stress yes n no but 2tb is totally worth it 😊

I was sweating bullets as I'd never done anything like that before, but it went fine and I felt really proud of myself. Also, it's not just the memory, heavier games run much much smoother off the HD rather than a card

AdmirableMonitor3266: I bought the 512GB version as soon as it was released and told myself that it's got plenty that I don't ever need to upgrade it at all. I remember thinking, it's about time that I splurged on something nice that I can just enjoy and not have to do any upgrades to it. But then I thought it would be cool to switch out the back cover for the clear one and improve the cooling. Then I decided, well, it's not that hard to open so might as well swap out the joysticks for the hall effect ones. I had one get stuck occasionally. Then I decided, I want a 1 TB SSD in there so let's just do it.
I started with the best of intentions but I fell victim to the siren song of upgrades that probably aren't necessary but I'm too much of a tinkerer to not do it.
wrenblaze: I bought 512 just in case but I think that I would be happy with 256. Games I play rarely go over 40 gb and why do I need several games at the same time. At one time I play mostly 1-4 games.
poweredbylight: Bought a 1tb OLED and slapped a 1tb microsd in it. Yeah I have no reason to open this sucker up until something breaks.

Dunkaccino2000: I use a SanDisk Extreme Pro 1TB and it's been great. Steam Deck won't get the full read speed but it runs fast regardless and it was much better than the SanDisk Ultra 512GB I had previously

fds_1: This. I limit myself to 3-4 games at a time, I dont install new ones until I finish those. Once I finish em, I delete em. The feeling of “but what if I want to play it later” is there but judging by my own experience it rarely actually happens

AggressiveWindow6003: I dropped a 1tb in mine the day I got it. Then I replaced the thermal compound with PTM 7950 phase changing thermal pad. Then boosted the TDP up to 24 watts. Not only does it run much much faster but it's been over a year and even a year later temps stay about 10-15° lower then they ever did on a stock steam deck at 15 watt TDP does.
The only other mod I've ever done is I got bored one weekend and hooked up a GTX 1060 to the steam deck. It ran fine but makes the deck become none portable. Now 7 other handhelds later and I still heavily mod every handheld I get and just yesterday I pushed the Lenovo legion go to 60 watt TDP double it's maximum TDP limit of 30 watts. Scoring an extra 25% performance. Hehe.
Half the fun is modding these things forcing them to run at their absolute best ever. 😁☺️. The steam deck is great but it's just too slow for my liking even with the mods it's like 30% higher FPS then my friends OLED deck gets it still feels very slow to me and bugs the hell out of me tbh. Lately I've been really enjoying hell divers 2 and at 800p native medium high I get an average of 58 with 52 fps 1° lows vs the deck OLED 30-35 on low 😢 and it looks bad on top of that. The deck is great for a lot of things. Playing new AAA games isn't one of them. Sure it plays but not well.
brscxs: Eh to each their own. It’s like modifying a car, I’m happy with the performance as is and would rather the security and longevity of keeping it stock, but I know some people would rather roll the dice and have more HP for less time. I have my actual PC for when I want to play AAA titles at 120fps. Having been used to Nintendo and Sony handhelds from back in the day, the stock SD is more than enough.

AggressiveWindow6003: Pushing past 28watt TDP is getting into the dangerous area why I stick with 24w. And yes you have your desktop. But I have the best of both worlds and I spend more time gaming outside in the back yard with a RTX 3080 EGPU than I do inside. I have a desktop too. It's solid with a 7950x 32gb and 2080ti. But even when I do game at my desk I more often find that I am gaming with my legion go and 3080. It has a catering handle and all I have to do is remove the power cable and take it with me. I have a power plug outside at my deck at my friend's and an extra in the bag. Timing takes roughly 1 minutes and 30 seconds to set up and boot and I have all my games settings apps and everything else or I just take the handheld and with a extra 78wh battery that clips into the back can game for 4+ hours anywhere anytime and runs great.
My monitor is only 75hz but it's 1440p so it works out.
Handhelds are freaking awesome and why I have 8 of them. Lol. But I need to start selling them as the wife hates gaming and we're going to have a baby soon 😢😵💫😭

masterlink91: I installed a 2 tb ssd in my 512g OG deck. It was my first modd in computer stuff. Get a good screw set so you have all the right tools. And u have to use a pc program to flash the ssd or something like that. Can't remember, I'm deff not doing it to my oled. I read it's trickier than the OG. And I was pretty rocked doing it. 420. And a 2tb ssd is expensive af.

I have a doc where I write down what to do when opening / modifying a device. My steam deck doc has a step “Check for SD card, remove prior to opening device”

disposable_account01: Man, Amazon had the 1TB Corsair M600 on sale for $70 last week. I couldn’t sleep on that. It is such a brainlessly easy upgrade, and even though I have the 512GB model, those extra 512GB (plus another 512GB microSD), means I can have my entire library with me at all times, without need for internet.

Dawn_of_Enceladus: Can't believe you haven't seen any of the ton of posts about people opening their Decks after forgetting to take off their SD cards. If so, opening the Steam Deck (for modding, generally) without retrieving the SD card first literally breaks it in two pieces, killing it.
I have seen it so many times here that firmly believe Sandisk has increased its benefits since this thing was released, thanks to the people that has to buy not only one, but two SD cards because of this.

Fast-Needleworker923: I’ve held out for as long as I could even tried workarounds but the shader cache thing became a HUGE problem as I filled up my 1TB SD card . I found that the less space u have on your internal drive the slower your deck will run and start getting errors . I have a lot of bigger games, game modding, programs and emulation . I finally gave in and installed a 256gb ssd nvme I bought for $15 myself. It was beyond easy and I’m glad I did . I just purchased a second 1tb sd card btw 🤭

Pfafflewaffle: I have the og 64gb one and added a 1tb ssd, it’s pretty easy as long as you remember to remove the sd card and unplug the battery lol. I did it when I was drunk in my garage, yikes. Anyways no the sd card doesn’t stick out it clicks in. There is no rubber cover for it though.

HoroSatre: No, it's not even leveled to the opening/lid, it's literally inside, so you don't have to worry hitting it in some way.
Hopalongtom: It's at risk of breaking when people open up the case without removing it.
AdmiralUpboat: Oh it's not "at risk" it's a guarantee. If you don't remove the SD card you will snap it in half if you successfully remove the back from the body.
Salander27: Yes, exactly. The back requires a certain amount of force to pry loose after the screws are removed. Considering where the card is during the prying process it would be subject to forces incompatible with its continued existence as a singular piece of plastic and silicon.
