I have some tradies in the house today, and I've just walked upstairs to find two of them giving Gwyn a belly rub and Gwyn lying flat on his back, loving life. Was so funny. He's such a little belly rub slut and I love how friendly he is.

20

To be honest a two hands belly rub from tradies sounds pretty nice

Thanks for being so supportive guys. Honestly, it's been a real blessing to have all your kind words ❤️

Congrats! Does that mean you dont have to keep applying for new gigs? or still wanna get out of dodge?

4
aussie.zone

Gives me some breathing space to only apply for gig I actually want, instead of anything and everything. I'll keep my eye out still, but will be very picky. My manager is supportive of me getting a higher paying role and might advocate to make my current role a level higher.

At least I don't have to deal with interviews.

8
aussie.zone

That's definitely a great position to be in! The feeling of desperation and having to sell yourself is really demoralising.

If I wasn't so burnt out at my last place I would've definitely preferred looking for jobs while knowing I still had my existing job, but I was in no headspace to look for new jobs without first quitting my old one

4

I've done that once in the past. Had enough and quit. Found another role fairly quickly, but it wasn't fun at the time.

Nice! Yeah always better to job search without the metaphorical ticking clock hey.

2

Had an interview recently and was shortlisted. Didn't really vibe with the role and the team, but work is work. Glad I can withdraw from that process now. Two years of certainty is very welcome :)

I have not thought at all about what to do with the weekend yet and then I realised next weekend is a long weekend and I also have no ideas for that.

BUT I am finally getting my dashcam installed on Tuesday so maybe I should hit the road for the long weekend and see if I can get some Dashcam Owners Australia footage of some dickhead doing dickheadery.

10

In my experience you won't have to drive far for dickheadery or arseholitude. They're everywhere.

Considering blowing out the Easter long weekend into the next week and doing a significant drive. Back to looking at the map and thinking about where's new and interesting. I have never been west of Adelaide city in SA, or really anywhere in SA besides Adelaide city and a suburb around it or two. Adelaide is barely worth slowing down for but maybe Port Lincoln or Flinders Ranges could be alright.

I've done the east coast up and down a bunch of times so it's not super appealing to me unless I decide to go FNQ which I've only visited twice but I do like me some tropical holiday.

Will have to do some pondering.

2

I did some googling into what that is and although slightly intriguing.. I'm not sure that's something I would be comfortable attending solo. Also I feel like I'm already judging imaginary attendees in my mind as poseurs and phoneys and I can't handle people like that very well. I'm pre-gatekeeping a community I'm not even a part of and that's a me problem.

Have you been to Victor Harbour? Or anywhere on the Limestone coast? Nice drive at this time of year. Whale watching etc.

1

aussie.zone

Nope I haven't spent any time in SA besides Adelaide and traversing to/from it by car without detouring. Could definitely be an option though. FNQ is nice and all but it is a lot of driving to pack into a week.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into that area.

Don't miss Coffin Bay and the oysters. Particularly as a lot of Tassie oysters are dying right now so won't be cheap or easy to get for some time.

Buying a tiny personal wheatbag for the cat was a good call. I've heated it up and tucked it in next to her. Hoping at some point she'll put her head on it so the warmth can help the ear pain and let the antibiotic drops sink in deeper.

It bugs me that I didn't notice further problems until now, but I thought the first round of drops had cleared it.

8
lemmy.world

The amount of pinned daily threads is starting to get a bit silly. They're not even from this year!

Managed to write a whole bunch of emails and applications (10+), so yay me, although I'm completely knackered.

Also feel like I might be mildly cursed. Every time I contact an RACV drive instructor, I get asked for details, and promptly ghosted afterwards. 2 more, and I'll be out of the ones that serve the local area.

Joke's on me for buying the vouchers first, and then trying to schedule an instructor, rather than going the other way around.

8

I think it's a federation bug, when I still was on my lemm.ee account, the unpinning isn't getting synced.

5
Nathreply
aussie.zone

What a fascinating issue! No, I have no idea what's going on, here. It's clearly some sort of federation bug. The pin request is federating, but the unpin is not.

I've checked six other lemmy instances, they all have extra Melbourne Daily threads pinned. They each agree that

  1. Mar 22 2024 (Today)
  2. Dec 26 2023
  3. 26 Nov 2023

Should all be pinned. I don't know what November and December 26 have in common, I wonder whether they're Lemmy version upgrade dates? There was one at Christmas time, I'll have to double-check the exact date.

Beyond those dates, five of the six instances had random dates pinned (though two of them had 01 Jul 2023) still.

This isn't affecting aussie.zone users.

4

Upgrade dates might make sense, or it's a left over when aussie.zone was having a few synchronisation problems with servers that weren't on 0.18 at the time. They might have just not unpinned properly.

1
db0reply
lemmy.dbzer0.com

Is this a thread where posts are only allowed by mods?

3

Yep, I basically get the first one on lemmy.world.

1

In my experience with the Lemmy.world instance, sometimes pinned posts will not “un-pin” the next day. You need moderator status to unpin them I think.

6

That's unusual because with in 10 minutes of me posting the thread at midnight some kind soul pins it and unpins the old one.

3

Ok, I won't say I've fixed this bug, but I have managed a dodgy hack around it that fixes it sorta. In the immediate term, it has been fixed it for lemmy.world and lemmy.dbzer0.com users. I'll look at other instances soon.

The answer is to re-pin the post, wait a while (10 minutes is enough, but I might try reducing it and experimenting) for that to propagate/federate across Lemmy, and then Unpin the post. Doing it this way unpins the post properly.

It appears the original unpinning for some dates didn't get exported to other instances. I'm still not sure what was special about November and December 26, I got a bit distracted with the solution and not bothering much with the cause.

Note for anyone catching a tram down Flinders Street, one of the trams made a most horrible squeaky noise before breaking down/stopping. According to the driver, something got stuck under the tram, so watch out for delays there.

6

::: spoiler Rant I had to wait a period to apply eardrops after washing out the cats ears, so after all the hassle physically getting hold of the damn wash and then falling asleep I missed the drops this morning. (Reminder to self. Stay on top of the first aid kit regularly to have this stuff in date and on hand. The second bottle coming should help. But I'm so angry that her ear infection resulted from medication used to treat another infection and it just won't go away.)

I got home and crash napped with loads of wet laundry waiting to be hung. The washed and dried laundry is piling up waiting to go into space bags against moths and fleas (and to contain the damn clothes). I cleaned up the cat vomit and comforted the separation anxiety when I got home and had put dishes in to soak this morning. But a sink leak flooded the floor and everything in the cabinet underneath while I slept.

I'm so fucking tired. My mental state has been fucked for weeks. Like, bad bad. I've now overexerted myself badly two days in a row when doing it even once has real consequences. Fuck my shit body. Fuck my disability supports so frequently falling through for the past 2-3 weeks, and of course extra shit has to be happening on top. Of course it's labour intensive stuff.

But the cat has had her supper and pain meds, and her evening eardrops. The latest fresh load of laundry has been chucked into the energy inefficient dryer, the very bottom items pulled out of the soaked cabinet and an already damp towel that was possibly due for rewashing has been thrown down on the puddle on the floor. I'm folding dry towels and puppy pads to clear the clothes horse and empty the wet basket. I'll check if the towels need to be rewashed and use them for further mopping up first.

After a rest I can maybe do the cat's bowls. Then my dishes. Then fully empty the undersink cupboard and wipe it out with spray cleaner, and sort out the soaked cardboard packaging.

I've booted the pot plants back outside for floor space and watered them because they were dying. I needed them out from underfoot and the space for a second clothes rack.

I am going to be in so much pain the next few days.

This is what happens when extra stuff hits me and/or I don't get the help I'm supposed to - I'm pushed into an overexertion/crash cycle. :::

6

Alright, got kiddos artwork in the post for his Nan. Shes gonna love it. Also, 5.20 for an a4 envelope!? Yikes!

Movie Review

El Conde. Netflix.

this movie is awesome. First thing. It's different and new. The hardest thing to do in the world is to make something different and new.

Imagine Iñárritu ( I googled them tildes ) made a parody of Isabelle Allende's tiresome sickly sweet books ( yes I have read some ) , Sound of Music, Interview With a Vampire, Knives Out and Judgement at Nuremberg .

Visually, it's really very beautiful. Tawdry scenes in horrible places with horrible people look like art. Even the dialogue of the English translation is very good, the Spanish must be like poetry. The story is a mind fuck.

Scenes that really stick. The nun learning to fly was lovely. A joyful mind using a gift from Satan.

The scene where Pinochet is describing some of his crimes against humanity. I have been hearing this stuff for decades and have to intellectualise or I get too distressed.* At the same time * he is blending a heart and then drinks it. Which makes me feel disgusted and sick.

!!! Shouldn't the description of his crimes have made me feel the same? Am I numb. 😔 Not unwillingly, but I have to make myself numb or I can't function to do good in the world/fight these bastards in my own way.

I will watch again.

5 Hobbits

6

the message.

Sometimes in life there are no good choices.

Sometimes we have to get in bed with a devil, pinochet, to kill a another devil, galtieri . 😔one devil is better than two devils

I do understand the Chileans were not happy 😔 But their turn at freedom came. Just had to get the soviets/kgb out first ( those nice guys who are committing war crimes in ukraine right now ) ( fuck, i'd forgotten how complicated it all was. The nazis were there too 😵‍💫)

My kids know my affinity for comfy warm clothes and forced me to buy an Elite Eleven hoodie late last year.

I am very glad I listened, as it's the most comfy fleece garment I've ever owned.

Also, I may be the oldest person to wear one, if yesterday's trip to the footy is anything to go by.

When my wife needed a new car, I said to her "do you just want my new SUV and I'll buy a shitbox for myself?" "No no no, I want my own". Ok. sure, i mean you helped pick the SUV but whatever. I subtly pushed her into a compromise we'd both be happy with on a hunch, and boy was I right cause she's nicked my car again! Officially, the reasoning is "Diesel is a lot cheaper at the moment", Fair! but would that really stop you driving your new (to you) car? I'm not buying it. I think I just got screwed out of another car by her haha

Anyone here sleep with noise cancelling earbuds in? Looking to cancel out some snoring next to me. I'm a side sleeper though, so not sure how that'll go with earbuds in. Currently do not own any so can't really test it....

4
Catfishreply
aussie.zone

Speak for yourself. I’ve been informed I can impersonate a MAC truck.

5

Hahaha.

Sometimes I wake from a nap to a blaring tv because "someone" can't hear it. Usually it's because I'm exhausted.

3

Have you tried a fan or similar? Sleeping near noise I find it to be partially an anticipation or regularity problem. A broken snore pattern isn’t too bad, a regular one is. The drip hole in the gutter pinging at precise intervals is unbearable!

3

Side sleeper and regular washing machine/snore like truck = Llab. Although I myself can’t sleep if someone gets to a snoring before me.

So I’ve tried a few, though YMMV. Anything hard is a no: EarPods, Loops, Earphones etc., all hurt in time.

Soft plugs for me take time to get use to. Ones I have used for riding have been Alpine and Surefire. ATM for riding I love the Surefire Sonic Defenders EP5. Haven’t tried them in bed, but they might be a bit too suctiony.

Honestly though, if I was a flat out back sleeper and could get my Sony 1000XM5 headphones to stay on… That would be heaven.

3

I have some Loops and side sleep. Haven’t tried the combo. You might get too much pressure which can cause damage.

2
aussie.zone

I do - I am also a side sleeper, but having used earbuds for a while, and a pillow that, while firm, has a cushiony layer, I'm used to the feeling of them. I almost need them to sleep, now

1
aussie.zone

What earbuds do you use? I'm looking at some Soundcore A10s. Not noise cancelling, but seemingly tick the boxes.

I got some blue blocker spectacles for the dark morning dog walks to take out some of the high intensity headlights and they're working a treat. It seems to have become fashion round me to have auto-high-beams on, which is a cunts act in suburbia with pedestrians about, IMO.
