I got the job!!!!!! General manager rang to congratulate me. I'll feel better once I have the contract, but still.

The search is finally fucking over. I was down to emergency levels of funding as this makes a huge difference.

It's the day for good news hey? Congrats to us both!! Hope that contract comes through soon, I can't imagine they'd dick you around. Definitely feel you on starting to scratch around a bit for funds, you'll sleep well when those paychecks come through :)

Yeah I mean if the GM rang me to congratulate me I can't imagine they would fuck me around.

Background checks went through, got the official job offer call, nego'd a slight bump, contract should be through tomorrow and with any luck I'll be starting next Tuesday! And how good is this: they said after a few weeks I can change my specified working days to suit my needs, so I'm not fixed to the two days I pick at the start. How good is that?? Ultra flexibility!! Feeling very good about the job ๐Ÿ˜„

Then in the evening she stole my cash.

My indoor cat just dashed through the door as I was going out. First time she has done this. I only adopted her almost a month.

Panic!

She jumped my fence which borders a large park. I grabbed a blanket, some food and went into the park, yelling her name but not really hopeful.

My son comes out yelling "Mum! She's at the back door!". He let's her in and she bolts for a bed to hide under.

She can have all the pets and treats tonight. My heart rate is gonna take some time to recover.

My girl broke through a flyscreen while I was out. I got home and freaked the fuck out. Ran around in a panic.

Found her hiding from the rain, meowing sadly next to the window she broke out of.

Aww! poor girl! I bet the relief you felt when you got her back was intense. Sounds like the rainy weather kept her close.

My girl just bolted. When she jumped the fence my heart dropped. We're close to Scotchmans Creek and the foxes there that have been known to attack cats. She's not much of a climber inside so seeing that just told me how panicked she was. Or determined.

Since she's been back inside she's had some bonus treats and resumed sitting in her favorite spot by the window.

6

I don't think I had ever panicked like that before in my life.

I think inside cats have this incredibly optimistic view of being outside cats, then reality kicks in and they want their treats and brushies lol

Well it's sad to see the Bendigo Hotel closing, they have also done a lot to pee off the metal scene recently.

Things have been really sus there since the start of this year. Booking less metal, removing metal merch on the wall, and trying to change the vibe of the place.

Looks like the Ungrateful Dead fest also has to find a new venue as well.

8

Long term booker was sacked (there's reasons), but their replacement knew nothing about Metal. Hardly any gigs got booked since August last year, or if there is a gig, its was a shitty Destroy All Lines lineup.

Due to poor sales, the Bendi then tried to move away from metal. They also put on normie events like industry night and non-metal trivia nights. Metal merch on the walls was slowly disappearing as well.

This pissed off metal heads, as they felt they weren't welcome there anymore. The $17 dollar pints also added more insult to injury.

Meanwhile Old Bar and The Tote have fucking killer lineups, and way cheaper drinks. Way better to just go down the road.

Zucchini slice in da oven..

First time making it.

Suffice it to say I'm hoping I don't fuck it up.

After reading some pointers a few said to strain the zucc after grating so it's not mushy and I have to say the raw juice was delicious.

7

Zucchini slice has been my go to for kids lunches for a while. I never strain the zucchini. Has never come out bad.

Pi day pide dough has been made and is now rising. I'm going to do a mix of eggplant and tomato with a bit of roast lamb with moroccan seasoning and top with some slices of bocconcini.

Oh man, what a pain. Good luck!!!

And +1 about the Mazda diesels... good friend who is a mechanic also says to avoid them like the PLAGUE.

Exact opposite of the petrols, which are rock solid (and having owned five, including two that went north of 300k before replacement and my current daily at 120k, I can confirm).

Not that it helps 5 hours later but slap the skin around it lightly instead of scratching. Thatโ€™s the go to for tattoos

Edit: Do it really light around the itchy spot, little taps! Just enough to ease an irresistible urge to scratch or rub. Don't do it a lot or to the extent you irritate or pull on it, and don't slap on a healing wound itself

Has anyone here ever changed jobs without qualifications/experience and was successful in getting a new job in the new field? If so, how did you go about writing the cover letter?

Since I'm studying teaching and realise it is a lot of theory, I thought I might apply for a job as a teachers assistant but I don't have any experience in the field. I've been working on my cover letter and covered how I am studying my education degree, relevant skills I've picked up in my current and past roles, why I want to change careers and how I want to get some hands on experience so I can be best prepared to be a teacher and even mentioned it as an investment in both (the school and me) our futures.

I also mentioned Ive done work with kids for school talks with my books

I said I don't have any experience and someone told me I shouldn't mention that. But I figure being upfront about it is the best way to go. They're going to see it on the resume and even in the cover letter.

Any thoughts on including that part or anything else I should mention?

And should my resume cover my past work roles and all I've done or things that might be relevant to the role I am applying for?

Thanks,

5
Nathreply
aussie.zone

The answer depends a lot on who you're applying to, and how they recruit. If you are dealing with a larger organisation or one that hides behind a tier of recruitment agencies, you'll be better off being less upfront as to your lack of experience. AI bots going through applications are looking for buzzwords. If the position description is asking for skills a, b and c - be certain to have those words in your application.

Once you reach a human, the best general advice I can offer is: Explain how you can solve their problem. They have two problems:

  1. They need someone to do this job.
  2. Recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training/onboarding a person in this job is heaps of work.

You're here to solve problems. Not create problems. If you lack the experience they're looking for, explain how you'll solve their problem anyway. It sounds like you're already doing this a bit, but really focus on it. I don't know anything about the education sector to give you specifics, but I know how employers think - I've been that person hiring people. That person wants someone who wants to be there, will be reliable, and who won't be a problem. Ideally someone who will be around for as long as they need (whether that's long-term or a school year etc). They most especially don't want to be back in this place a few weeks from now because you suck or you were over-qualified and got a better offer a few weeks after being hired.

So yeah - tell them that you don't have experience being a teacher's aid, specifically. But also tell them how that's not really a problem because you have worked with kids before, are studying an education degree, and whatever other skills you bring to the table. That's the sort of stuff they're looking for - and your honesty on the matter of experience will be appreciated.

As to the resume, I'd list employers and expand with dot points under each job anything relevant to the present position.

3

That has been pretty much my focus. Really on about the benefits and I am taking this career change seriously since I am studying, over anything else.

Pretty sure there is an Ask a Manager post about exactly this

Whatโ€™s your go-to toilet paper brand? Usually get Quilton in bulk from Amazon but they have no stock and I have no idea what to buy, itโ€™s been my choice for ages.

4

The Aldi double length 3 ply Confidence brand. Comes in a four pack or an eight pack. Good quality, cheap and one roll lasts quite a long time. Yes it does fit in my roll holder. During covid I was getting the triple length rolls from colesworth and they only just fit the holder. My holder is a suction one from Bunnings and is not a permanent attachment but works fine on the tiled wall of the toot. And I can move it around if I want to or to clean the walls.

Do they fit in a standard roll holder? Not that I know what a standard holder is, but mine donโ€™t go very far off the wall.

2

It fits on my holder. That's a full roll.

The holder it's self doesn't move. I can measure the roll if you like.

3

No, they don't. The roll has to perch on top until it gets down small enough to fit on the holder

1
aussie.zone

Who gives a crap, the bamboo one. Because large quantities of tp just turn up on the doorstep periodically and I don't have to think about it.

3

My Aldi has it too. But I prefer the Confidence brand for quality. WGAC is kinda flimsy, more expensive, harder to store that quantity and, I am not a fan of it. And my Aldi is so conveniently located that I don't need to buy in bulk. Though I did enjoy my sister's family xmas present just before covid, which was a Christmas themed WGAC toilet roll. Nearly as much fun as the photocopier paper reams with the covering paper printed with a gold mitre for the Pope's last visit to Melbourne. I nicked one of those from work for a souvenir.

3

The normal one is pretty ordinary, I get the bamboo one too. A big box lasts me like a year. Set and forget.
