Meta and Facebook services are down.
Post by: u/webheadVR
It looks like according to downdetector and numerous posts, Meta may be down globally.
We will update this post as more information comes in, but please use this post to discuss for now.
If your quest is unaffected, turn off it's wifi for now. If it is, there is no workaround currently.
Edit: Services appear to be returning, try restarting your quest.
BloodLantern221: The issue seems to be fixed, as when I tried to reconnect a few minutes ago it worked
k3rrpw2js: Super confused..so we can't even use the headset because meta is down? What about all those offline games I've played when my Internet is down??? I know I've done that before. Unless I'm losing it. But today it won't let me play even those.
If this is how their setup is, I won't be buying anymore games from them. Ridiculous DRM bs.
webheadVR: It's because it returned an invalid login.. I'm not defending them, but I get why the platform is acting like it is.
maceface272: Why do these headsets even have anything to do with Facebook? Why would Facebook being down brick our headsets? Seems like a huge flaw they need to figure out or I can see lots of people selling their headsets, I know I'm definitely considering it.
Lujho: It’s not Facebook being down, it’s that the systems that Meta uses to log you in to the headset are also down.
Anyone who wants to play single player games should be able to use their headset by turning off their router before they boot up their headset.
DTrnD: AI attacks us. Now will leak all your chats with your side chick.
aline-tech: Mods closed my poll post, I was hoping to collect data:

I understand Meta's servers are down, but I legitimately can't access the menu/battery status/settings/etc. or attempt to work in offline mode. My device is effectively temporarily bricked.
This feels like a massive issue IMO, and one I was unaware of when purchasing the device. Are you in the same boat?
Dabrus: Yeah, this is really bad. They should at least allow us to boot the device, access settings, browse internet, and use it with PC. I had no idea that it can get bricked like that. It feels as if I don't really own it...
yankeedoodle56: If you use PCVR via steam the steam link app is still working, at least it's working for me for now.
Dabrus: I can't even boot the headset though :( I tried resetting it because I thought it may help, and I'm stuck on a popup about generating a new device code which doesn't work. I can't get pass it.
threehoursago: > It feels as if I don't really own it...
In all honesty, you don't own much of anything these days.
czerys: There is a message but I was able to connect via steam to my pc and I'm able to browse, open settings etc. Do you think it may be regional thing ? I'm in Europe
Neiherendere: I wasn’t aware either. I avoided getting the Quest for years because a Facebook account was mandatory and I only bought it after the requirement was removed. Had I known about this mandatory online rubbish, I definitely wouldn’t have made the purchase.
aline-tech: Yea, likewise - especially weird considering we can disable Wifi and work in offline mode no problem regularly.. to brick our device rather than defaulting us to offline mode seems like a massive oversight.
Neiherendere: It is. If servers can’t be reached, then just disable online functionality. This mandatory “device code” nonsense is complete rubbish when apps are all stored locally. If this was intended design, I really hope regulators crack down on Meta.
webheadVR: We are getting multiple posts about this a minute, your welcome to keep the comment in here :) Gave you an upvote.
aline-tech: Understood, thank you!
aceattorneymvp: GREAT...just the day when my prescription lenses are supposed to arrive!
palacepaulse25: Don't laugh I just fitted mine today and can't test them out lol This is a disaaaaaaaaaaaarster😭🤣
PhantomFace757: Not just down, but rendering our HARDWARE unusable.
How is this legal? How do we stop it? How do I get a refund on buying a Q3 that I don't actually own now?
Sorry, Meta..this was the last straw. I have no choice but to leave this nasty ecosystem.
Sad-Invite-7996: Feeling the same. Love the quest, but damn if this is the future of the metaverse haha good luck. worth jack sh*t
Maxevill: Yeah it's such a nasty system, imagine of all android phones stop working when google it down. We should still be able to use all the offline features.
Roshy76: Ya, it would be one thing if online games wouldnt work, but I can't even play offline games? That's ridiculous.
longing_tea: Now you guys know what it is to use a Quest 3 in China. Meta services aren't available in China so you can't even activate it, or use it offline.
Falcs: This is the world we live in, almost any device that relies on an internet service of any kind will instantly brick if it can't connect. We accepted it when we signed all of those various EULAs, physical games with online components also can stop working if the servers stop for any reason.
PhantomFace757: Not true. I can still use my laptop, xbox, tv, clocks, weather stations, even my security cameras are able to be used when the backend of their service fails.
Meta is unique in the fact they have been able to disable our hardware due to their failure.
maceface272: So unbelievable that we just get locked out of our devices cause they can't get their stuff together. What do we do if they can't get it back up? Just throw them in the trash? I just bought a quest and I think I'm gunna sell it if every time this happens we all just get locked out
Maxevill: Lol, global outage posts are such a blessing when it's about the device you bought after burning your 70% saving
Neiherendere: Not being able to use the headset while offline is massive BS.
Lujho: You generally can use it while offline, this is a different issue.
People who want to use it offline now - as long as they haven’t tried to use it already during this outage - can do so by booting up their headsets with their router off so it won’t try to log in and get screwed up.
Rancer210: I factory resetted my quest 2 thinking it was my problem.
DarthRiznat: Lol.... I've heard so many people saying they don't wanna use Facebook to sign in. Now even with Meta we can't sign in when Facebook's down :p
According-Sector859: maybe people don't wanna use fb account to login is because they're not comfortable linking their social media to some game store. Not that they have problem with facebook.
mlgmonster2004: how is this related at all?
namealreadytaken169: Phew I thought my account was stolen.
Sadly I cannot use my Quest 3. It requires a device code, and the app doesn't accept the code I'm receiving via email. So yeah, keep your quest offline
Shima-shita: Same, I had a moment of panic, glad it was just a server outage even though my headset is a brick for now.
Kaioo0o: Also tought my details were for the grabs. It sends de email code , but then it asks to confirm by phone number. And there i dont receive anything.
Shinigami-Starship: hell even when i took it offline it wouldn't work
jtotal: I was getting ready for bed, getting prepared for my night shift tonight, and was about to send a good "night" message when I was abruptly logged out.
I'm now wide awake after freaking out. Thought I lost all of my purchases on my almost 20 year old Facebook account.
I'm so scramble brained right now that I've spent the last three or so minutes wondering why I ended that sentence with "account".
josjshsshsjs: dude, same here! i was stressing so much and it is currently 3 am in the morning for me!!
V4705: I thought my Meta.com account got banned because I complained too much about their software on their forums XD
aykay55: LMFAO even then they would just ban your forum access not your whole account
DNedry: This is a huge issue they need to look into, not being able to use my headset because their service is down is not OK.
aykay55: Welcome to the tech dystopia age. We've actually been here since 2012.
If the servers for your hardware or software goes down, your access is immediately taken away, even if the software in its entirety is local.
webheadVR: Unpinning as it seems to be fixed, hopefully the only one this year..
Edit: Keeping up for now for visibility, as a few users have had issues still.
Prof_Delaventure: Not being able to use the Meta Quest 3 when Meta's servers are down is a HUGE issue...
I even think this may be illegal in the EU...
Sad-Invite-7996: It's a sad thing the world has come to. There are only a few big companies with enough cash to burn to keep pushing VR through to the mainstream and we're stuck with this one. They create a fantastic headset from a hardware an software standpoint. Put from a user and support standpoint still in the dorm room from 2004.
webheadVR: What's funny, is if it went "down" it likely wouldn't have been an issue, but since its causing issues with login, it breaks entitlement. Its like you can turn off the wifi and use it but since it's failing auth its different.
Raging_Capybara: So what you're saying is I need to unplug my router before I turn on my quest?
LawOfAnitya: Yup then just forget network before you turn it back on lol
Shoddy_Ad_7853: I think it's illegal here in Quebec.
aykay55: What's illegal about this specifically?
gerykelf: Yeah. It's just sad that people need to experience it for themself when the writing is on the wall. Just look at the community proudly calling this guy stupid for simply wanting to access unrelated features of a purchased product even when he is not allowed first party server access.
https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/1av411x/2_questions_before_i_buy_an_oculus_quest_2/
TofuLordSeitan666: Hopefully our headsets are not bricked. LMAO
Longjumping-Tip1657: So basically I should turn my wifi off before I turn my quest on again? If it's not fixed by that point at least.
Spiriax: It's resolved!!
CMDR_KingErvin: Good thing they made us link all our quests to Meta/FB accounts. It’s almost like this could’ve all been avoided if it stayed separate 🤔
Dan_Glebitz: We are all in the same boat here. No use trying codes or whatever as that will just cause massive bottlenecks. The whole Meta system is down and we are all lovked out intil they fix it.
IncidentWorth: At least I know it’s not just me now. I was freaking out worried someone had stolen my account.
Deemo_here: I think they need a better error message than "something is wrong"! Something like "Our servers are down so don't ******* panic".
PeyroniesCat: I prefer a contrite “Oopsy Daisy.”
Maxevill: Yeah lol. I was ***** like burh wtf went wrong with this expensive device.. While Mentally preparing myself to spend whole night to find how to factory reset quest 3 & do it.
Raging_Capybara: I just figured I got banned from Facebook tbh
liftbikerun: Yeah, I ended up resetting my password because it has logged me out of everything, my SMS reset link never showed, nor did my email , my 2FA stick wouldn't work on my phone so I had to do it on my computer, only to find errors there too. Finally the website allowed me to reset so I added a 2FA on my app as well. What a fiasco all because of shitty error pages.
V4705: you're right but the issue is larger, they need to let us use the device when their servers are unreachable. the exact phrasing is confusing but it's our smallest problem right now.
JoshuaPearce: They don't want to do that then because people could block the servers via firewall and ... still have their device work.
Thanks, I hate it.
webheadVR: You already can. I've had a q1 offline for like a year.
Madgyver: Or at least "Can't conenct to server" Since the device can't positively tell if server is down or not.
threehoursago: They can't even bother to put a page up for their website stating it's down. "Forgot password?"
Hybrid_Project: Yup they kicked me out and can't log back in.
Dan_Glebitz: It's global!
Devil_Spawn: very glad to hear that this is not just me, though its a huge pain
Hybrid_Project: It's back online for now.
DylanWold: It's working again 🎊
BeemanDev: Meta app had logged me out and neither password or codes sent to email will log back in. Requesting password change fails too. Has Meta's crumbling infrastructure finally crumbled? Anyone else?
I went to help, stated that I cannot log in and got this :-
Thank you for contacting us
A member of the Meta Store support team will get in touch with you in 1-2 working days.
maceface272: Yeah the code I get and enter says "password Incorrect" and won't let me put in my actual password so I guess we just wait?
DaigoDragon: My quest started lagging like crazy ingame and when I wanted to restart it I found out about the issue... maybe the lag was part of the shutdown who knows.
gulivertx: Yep logged out automatically! And even cannot play pcvr with cable link when you’re logged out 😰 Sounds like a trap!
BeemanDev: So effectively my Quest 3 has been remotely bricked by Meta. Rebooting it shows this error, with no way to escape out of it. I had no idea that Meta had that much control!
Something went wrong.
An error occurred please try again
Generate a new device code
LtFork: so if my unit is already signed out, I'd need to wait, right?
webheadVR: It seems that way. I'm trying to see if I can find a workaround on my device. This is all within the last 10-15 minutes for me but modqueue is filling up with posts, so we're trying to jump on it as fast as we can.
webheadVR: Edit: It seems since I can't get past that login prompt, my apps fail entitlement checks, even if they launch.. Don't think there's fixing this as a user like us.. Not sure how it effects everyone.
According-Sector859: So this never happened before? I can't believe this could be an issue for device this popular which no one have talked about.
SleepingGecko: I’m sure they’ll patch the headset to handle whatever kind of auth error this is. Their last major outage didn’t do this because the servers were unreachable, but this time the auth servers are giving back a bad response
OkayOctopus_: I used my quest a few hours ago, glad I stopped before the storm started
amilliamilliamilliam: It would have been nice to know about this before I bought the thing.
webheadVR: I mean.. it's a service outage.
Mario-P: I can't log in either. Neither with the Android App nor on the Website. Even the 2 Factor Auth is not working right now.
Trochmann1: It's back up for me now!
Kiyoda: It's back up.
BeemanDev: So you all realise that if Meta goes down your Quest3 is effectively bricked? Is this even legal? Seriously gonna need a jailbreak to protect us, Facebook aren't exactly a reputable company who inspire much trust, this totally destroys it. I thought I bought my Quest 3, turns out I only rented it! Gonna have to be a law change if it's not already illegal.
GodrikUnderscore: Looks like the Quest is back up, but FB itself is still down.
webheadVR: Good to hear, I'll test with my device in a few.
Sad-Invite-7996: "Quest 3 is the best headset period". Only if it would allow to use it without this hassel. Jeez we shouldn't be impacted by a login service being down. In essence the quest 3 is now temporarily bricked.. . I have some much Love/Hate for this headset. Love the hardware, hate the software...
Additional-Big-1554: Turned the Quest 3 off and back on and seemingly able to login
mishooya: omg good to know its not just me🙏😭 was a little worried and thought i did something to break it
edit: i can log in with facebook but nothing works soo
Sparky81: Least it's not just me
Metzae: Whatever caused it, the outage was pretty massive. It looks like the most popular sites in the world were down at the same time.

tapafon: More like AWS/Google Cloud/Microsoft Azure servers (underline which I guess) are down. They hold 90% of the ENTIRE internet.
Some normies may thought that entire internet is down because of this.
tapafon: Oh, it even worse. Some nation cut 4 underwater international network cables. And they may cut 11 others
thomas4246: It’s crazy like you can’t do anything, not even browsing
happyhusband1992: Can confirm that I've access again to the device Meta rented me for €549
