DrunkenGerbils: Meta themselves warns that this can happen. You're extremely lucky if you've been leaving your Quest in direct sunlight. You must be leaving it in a position where the sunlight isn't hitting the inside lenses. That's what causes the problem, the outside camera lenses aren't affected by sunlight. The inside lenses act like a magnifying glass and can very easily burn the screens behind them in under a minute when exposed to direct sunlight. Here's the quote copy and pasted directly from Meta's website
"Don't store or leave your headset anywhere where it can be exposed to sunlight. The lenses inside your headset can be permanently damaged from less than a minute of exposure to direct sunlight even if it's indoors."

I highly recommend you stop leaving your headsets anywhere they are exposed to direct sunlight.

Btw Aliexpress has Quest 2 displays for ~100 bucks, probably cheaper than buying a broken Quest 2.

Dark-Rising64: When I’m finished with my Q3 I put the lens protector on and place it in one of those professional camera bags as my Deluxe Audio strap with battery and accessories can be kept safe and in one place
Maverett: Never say never, because I’ll certainly jinx myself, but I see this as a side benefit of having the overpriced dock… when I’m done the headset always goes back to the same place where any strong direct light can’t hit it (with the inside facing towards a windowless wall where most of my other electronics are); it’s easy to say “what if you don’t put it back one day”, but that’s the equivalent of “what if you don’t put in the lens protectors one day”, etc.

Brokedownbad: It is possible, but it's absurdly difficult because you have to pretty much disassemble the entire headset to get at the lense and screen assembly

rolandblais: The cameras should be fine - they're basically cell phone cameras, and those handle direct sunlight just fine.
TBH I have this case, but I rarely store my Quest. It's usually sitting on the couch with the lenses not facing any direct sunlight, but if I'm feeling paranoid I have a lens cover.

taosaur: I went shopping for "PCVR only" around the beginning of this month. I ended up with a Quest 3, despite walking into it with an "anything but the Facebook headset" attitude. Every other option amounts to paying nearly twice as much (or more) for trade-offs that add up to almost certainly a worse device.

I don't even use my Vive now that I got a Quest. It's just wayyyy too cumersome to set up all the cables for the Vive.
DrunkenGerbils: How are you going through Quest controllers so quickly? If you're replacing them after they get stick drift try getting some contact cleaner and spraying it in the crack of the thumb sticks. I've had the same controllers for almost two years and every few months they start getting some drift and I just use a little contact cleaner and they're good as new for a few more months.
I use them heavily every day too with games like Dungeons of Eternity so they get a lot of use with games that require a lot of thumb stick use.

Calm_Preparation_679: VR lens cover.. you can't get them in a pack with other useful items like silicone interface covers, or just by itself.
FuckIPLaw: A carrying case is also a good idea. I think Meta's thinking is you'll just keep it in the box when you're not using it, but if you make any kind of modifications (even installing the glasses adapter on the Quest 2 counts here), you can't do that.
Both is better, but either option will prevent this.

JoshuaPearce: For general information: The electrostatic padding which comes with lots of electronics does a great job for this. Cut it a little larger than the cavity, and it will stay in place. You don't need to do a perfect job, just an ok job.
upagainstgravity: Yeah I've even seen people cut a piece of the cardboard their headset came in to fit in there and I imagine that works just as well. No need to get too fancy.

wescotte: Yes, it probably can still happen with Quest 3. That being said Pancakes are very inefficient compared to the Fresnel lens in Quest 1/2 so it requires longer exposure time or more light to do the same amount of damage.
get_homebrewed: yes, all lenses have this issue if you're blowing up tiny screens to gigantic sizes, because that's just how light works. The literal first thing out of the box has stickers on the lenses that VERY CLEARLY INSTRUCT YOU NOT TO DO THIS, it's also in the manual!

yanginatep: This is why I put a cloth inside my Quest 2 when I'm not using it. Keeps dust out, but more importantly prevents any kind of sun damage.

bytejunkie64: This happened to my Quest Pro. I left it on the charging dock with the lenses facing away from the one window in the room. Somehow, the sunlight found it, and one day I put the headset on to find a cigarette burn just out of my direct line of sight on the right display. After I got a Quest 3, I immediately got a case, and I keep it in there with lens covers on when not in use. It was a painful lesson, for sure.
captfitz: This happened to me, I'm annoyed because I don't remember any disclaimer about this and it seems like it should have been a big warning. It's not some common sense thing that you would know from owning other electronics, and it's really easy for it to happen.
