Max was Max, Norris was brilliant, Hamilton drove well (and got some luck), Piastri was great, Perez again finished behind slower cars, Stroll needs to go.

I just want to say how great the growth of content and conversation has been here in just a few weeks. Let's see what the McCedes can do.

25

Me too. I never commented on Reddit as it would get buried anyways. Today I switched and I already commented twice. I would like to see a good conversation here during live events.

5
kbin.social

still can't believe mclaren made the hards work, lewis's softs were done shortly after the restart

6

It's a bummer Piastri didn't have softs, not that it was anyone's fault of course. But I bet he would've passed Hamilton before the end of the race!

1
lemmy.world

Really understating it here. Stroll's driven quite poorly today in general, to be honest, so I can't say I'm entirely shocked.

12

Sometimes the penalties are insane, considering that the other driver had to retire...

4
lemmy.world

I’m impressed the Mclarens have been able to keep up with the Red Bull so far

13
lemmy.world

Max is starting to pull away now. Over 2 seconds between him and Lando.

1

Eh, a bit of both, if you ask me. Will be interesting to see when the top 3 pit to go onto hards.

2
lemmy.world

I just don't understand why McLaren put Norris and Piastri on hard tyres.

Even split strategies surely after seeing how long George lasted on softs

9
Coelacanthreply
feddit.nu

We'll see, the C1 is a new tire this year. It's possible most teams underestimated it.

3
Coelacanthreply
feddit.nu

The garbage tire from Silverstone last year is called C0 this year.

2
lemmy.world

Wait I didn't know C0 was a thing. (Unless this means they just binned it, and I'm missing the joke.)

1
Coelacanthreply
feddit.nu

No they're still technically available though I doubt Pirelli are actually going to bring them out on any circuit this season. We have six compounds this year, C0-C5.

3

I get the hards for Piastri, but soft was the obvious call for Lando. Just strange that they would give him such a disadvantage on the restart.

2

Great defense from Norris and Piastri, didnt think they would keep the mercedes behind them.

9
lemmy.world

I can't believe how good Lando is defending himself against Hamilton... Impressive!

9
BURNreply
lemmy.world

Norris is driving like a madman out there and it’s so much fun to watch

6
zavreply
lemmy.world

Hamilton just got gifted a podium on a silver platter...

3

As always. Can’t remember the last time he was on the podium on merit!

1

Norris sounds pissed, and I can't say I blame him. What the fuck were McLaren thinking?

8
lemmy.world

I don't think giving McLarens hard tires is a good idea... They're trying to play it too safe.

8
Purrensreply
lemmy.world

Exactly! Hamilton is on softs, I feel like he will overtake Lando after restart...

1

I'm honestly shocked that Sainz hasn't done better than he has. I'd backed him for a podium shot, but this has not been a great race for him.

2

I think there needs to be a rework for the penalties. You look at WEC and a penalty seriously stings. Drive-throughs costing 30 seconds, S&G being 60s. What do we get, 5s for taking a driver out? The penalties are anemic

7

Really strong defending from Alonso there considering how bad the Aston were here today.

7
feddit.nu

Piastri is the new Invisible Man. Sitting casually in 4th as a rookie and nobody is even talking about him!

6

Really unlucky safety car for him. He absolutely deserved the podium today.

3

Piastri has it at the moment, 1:32:499. It's working on the Multiviewer app

2

first time following race comments on lemmy! look forward to it

6
krischereply
lemmy.world

I'm guessing the lower track temps are really helping. Also why LeClerc is struggling on the hards.

3

Perez on softs?

Sainz fastest on hards?

Saxophone during God Save the King?

It’s been a GP of questions so far

5

What in the actual fuck was that anthem? Completely unnecessary saxophone is always a choice

5

Right? They just need to float on over the track a bit and give us a bit of rain

2

Mercedes pitwall even said they won't be anywhere close the track. Just blueballing everyone

1
lemmy.world

I'm stunned. Ferrari disasterpiece today. At least they're not Haas?

4
💡dimreply
lemmy.world

I would like to say I'm shocked, but nothing Ferrari do should surprise anymore

1

Oh he definitely wanted to punch someone. I felt it and I'm only streaming the race.

2
feddit.nu

If Max has a "weakness" it's actually starts.

Which in his case means he's just really good at them and not otherworldly, but still.

5
BURNreply
lemmy.world

I think there might be a car problem on starts too. Perez has had similarly bad starts and Ver has had better starts in previous years

3

It's true that they've had some clutch problems over the past two years. Still, I'm not sure Max was ever renowned for his starts the way Alonso is (was?) for instance.

2
wgbirnereply
feddit.de

But is it a weakness of Max or of the Red Bull? I don't remember many great starts of Perez either.

2
sh.itjust.works

It's the car. Red Bull has commented in the past about trying to reduce wheel spin at the start of races by rolling on the power more slowly. They're better than they have been, but clearly not as good as McLaren.

3
lemmy.sdf.org

I watch Max’s onboard

the car always seems poor at accelerating from low speed

2

They've had trouble with the clutch for the past two years, but even so I wouldn't hold the starts specifically as Max's best attribute. But that is more because there are other parts of driving where he is just unbelievable.

1

Piastri is doing amazing, keeping close to Norris, serious shot at a podium today

4

As always this season, I will be hoping Max doesn't win, but I am excited to see what McLaren can do.

4

Brundle having trouble finding people on the grid is wild, how is Silverstone so mild?

4

fastest lap graphic not working?

doesn’t really matter this early but still nice to see it change throughout the race

4
lemmy.world

Congrats to Lewis on second place. No way is Lando going to be able to hold him back.

4

What a battle it was! Can't believe Lando was and to keep ahead.

2

Very much enjoyed this race. Quite a few exciting moments throughout! Stoked for Lando too. I have a feeling with this package of upgrades it might be possible for Piastri to podium, he came so close today. Maybe that's just wishful thinking on my end to see a rookie do well!

4

Out of the last few races I think this was one of the better ones, it had several fun moments.

Also, please fix your qualifying Checo, you’re killing me here

4

I am ready for McLaren dominance. Amazing how this car went from piss to leading the grand prix in one season

3

Huge credit to the mclaren engineers. The upgrades are massive and have clearly performed. The car last weekend showed a massive deficit, and I honestly thought it was just Lando pulling a gap to his teammate on a track he’s particularly good at. I’m very happy to be wrong. PIA being up there with NOR shows that the car really is that much better and that PIA can keep up with (but it looks like not quite challenge) Norris.

2

Norris on Hards is going to win him this or completely fuck him over

3
lemmy.ca

Prediction: Hamilton on softs is going to pass Lando on hards and then Max will have another of his infamous bad luck Silverstone inchidents and Lewis will win.

3

We can wish. But this is the 2023 season. Max will win... stuff will happen behind him.

1
lemmy.world

The McLaren livery is really growing on me. They should just make that their permanent one.

3

Holy shit I love seeing Lando fighting at the front. He clearly has the racecraft to do it

3

Did i hear that right was the Avril Lavigne? Shame she wouldn't chat

2

On the F1TV grid walk they don't much care about celebs, and it's great.

2

Inevitable but that was 4 laps more than I thought we’d get to see a McLaren leading this race

2
lemmy.world

Any guesses on whether or not Ferrari manage to avoid bottling their tyre strategy?

2
sh.itjust.works

There's pretty solid odds that they pit for a tire change a lap before it starts raining only to pit a few laps later for inters.

2

I think running the soft so long and being able to go to mediums is going to end up a lot better than everyone running hards

2

Other than a predictable finish for max this was a great race to watch. Cars were able to follow closely and battle through corners. Great finish for Norris and Piastries hope they can keep it up.

2

Very disappointed in mclaren rn... they threw this race

2
lemmy.world

So how is this formation lap with the apex car supposed to work? Will they just follow at the back and enter the pitlane?

2
wgbirnereply
feddit.de

That was only for the installation lap, not the formation lap, wasn't it?

1
espentanreply
lemmy.world

Yeah, what the heck. RUS and others had just shown how well the softs were holding up, but McLaren went with hards for a final 14-15 laps. I just don't get it..

2

I'd guess they had a plan in mind before the race, and were completely unwilling to deviate. That's the only explanation that makes sense here. Surely they're not just willingly obtuse.

2

This should be a fun 15 or so laps to the finish. Gonna be hard for Mclaren, id bet ver - ham - rus for the podium

2

That was seriously impressive driving from Albon at the end. Williams leading both Ferrari's!

3

That replay of KMag looks like his car has diarrhea from eating a curry that is too hot for him.

2

Leclerc doing good lap times on the hards, I think the C1s might be pretty good.

EDIT: scratch that he's not getting temps in them.

1
lemmy.world

To those who are watching this on F1 TV, does the crew seem a bit biased or am I on about nothing?

1
lemmy.ca

A little, yeah. But not enough to bother me too much. It's the British GP 🤷‍♂️

1

Silverstone's a good track, but it's the one track that I don't enjoy as much as I should because of how poor the commentary ends up being.

2
lemmy.world

He's not that far outside the range. I think he'll get at least one more shot.

1
lemmy.world

How long do we think Russell lasts on the softs? If he makes them go past lap 22, I'll honestly be a little impressed.

1

He's still doing solid lap times. Doesn't seem to be falling off yet.

2
lemmy.world

Haas is in a really bad spot. Super slow in the race while eating the tires and now MAG out of the race, just like HUL in the last race.

1
BURNreply
lemmy.world

Haas is embarrassingly bad right now. This is the exact same set of problems they had in the last Gen of cars. They’ve clearly got something fundamentally wrong in their processes that causes this

3
lemmy.world

Part of me says they're just making a mockery of the sport and should be pushed off the grid, but then who'd replace them, if anyone?

2
BURNreply
lemmy.world

They’re still a lot better than plenty of teams in the past. We’re spoiled now by 20 consistent teams. In the earlier days of F1 anyone could show up and there’d be “Pre-Qualifying” to eliminate the cars that were so slow to be dangerous to the competitors.

They’re funded, show up, and occasionally grab some points. That’s about all you can ask from a backmarker

2
lemmy.world

But imho it's bad for the sport that there are teams that can barely pretend they're contending for points.

1
BURNreply
lemmy.world

There always has and always will be backmarkers. There’s teams in all sorts of sports championships that barely ever win.

Only half of the cars get points. That pretty much means there is always going to be teams that won’t be challenging.

2
Coelacanthreply
feddit.nu

I think Gene just doesn't give a fuck about F1. It's just a self-sustaining advertising opportunity to him and nothing more and so there is no impetus from the top to sort out what is clearly a dysfunctional team even accounting for budget constraints.

1

It’s a massive advertisement for him. Can’t really blame him for that.

Haas machinery sales have grown a ton outside of the US since he started the team.

1
lemmy.world

Norris is a bit faster than Verstappen at the moment

1

Max is playing Motorsport manager on his phone at the same time though..

8

He's probably saving his engine. No need to push he's already won and has fastest lap.

3
Coelacanthreply
feddit.nu

Turns out McLaren were right and everyone else was wrong.

The new C1 does indeed seem better than expected.

2
💡dimreply
lemmy.world

I'm surprised.

That said, it looks like Lewis made his shifts work far too hard. George did a much better job of working his softs

1
lemmy.world

What happened to piastri? I haven't been following very well

1
lemmy.world

The only way this works out for Mclaren is if the cars around them shred the softs and drop off at the end.

These new tyres look a tad more durable than the ones we’ve had so far. That might play into race strategy this year.

1
lemmy.world

Sadly I don't see that happening. Russell made it 28? Laps with much more fuel

1

Piastri holding his own against Max is quite impressive

If the Mclaren pace holds on this could get interesting

1

Seems like it takes five laps for the hards to warm up properly, as Charles is now able to improve pace.

1
lemmy.world

McLaren dropping back for tyre temps, maybe. That was an insane start for Lando.

1

Probably just overall management. They know they're not going to beat Max. But if they can maintain a 2-3 finish, that would be phenomenal for the team.

3

Perez going for driver of the day again.

Cant win the championship so he's tanking in qualifying so he can win driver of the day every race...

1

Less than half way through and the gap is up to 5 seconds. Still it's nice to see McLaren holding position, would be very happy if we finished like this.
