Should i try an Ethernet Cable or just get a Quest Link Cable?
Post by: u/namananabrepusartlU
First off: My internet has a maximum speed of 250mbits but normally its more like 200. Also my Pc is only 2,5 Meters away from my Router.
I don't have an Ethernet Cable and i tried AirLink to see just how bad it would be and it was laggy and very grainy.
Now I don't know if i should just buy a cable to use instead of AirLink or if i should try Ethernet and just hope that it doesn't lag even tho my internet speed is only 250mbits
deject3d: Your internet speed doesn’t matter. Your local LAN/WLAN performance matters and it’s the hardware inside your router (or your wifi modem equivalent) that determines it. If your games require rock solid stability all the time such as competitive racing, prefer a link cable. If it doesn’t really matter, try plugging your pc into ethernet and using Air Link. You should have both options available IMO if possible. If your router is good then you shouldn’t have any problems with air link after you hook the pc up to ethernet.
namananabrepusartlU: How do i find out how good my router is? I also don't play any competitive games only Blade and Sorcery for now.
deject3d: you can just post what router or modem you have and someone might be able to tell you more precisely, but for example if I go look at my modem and google it, it says it follows the Wifi 5 "802.11ac" standards which is relatively modern but not the latest tech. most people would recommend getting a router that follows the WiFi 6e "802.11ax" standard, since it's newer and faster.

My 5ghz 802.11ac modem/routerworks just fine for AirLink for me, but if you have an older 2.4ghz-only router or something you might want to stick with getting an airlink cable.
namananabrepusartlU: Thank you i did google it and its 5Ghz. :)
hansoyvind1: Is the local internet in your house limited to 250? i dont think so as thats really weird. i think it should work fine if you get an ethernet cable
namananabrepusartlU: No, I live in germany so it's actually capped to 250 for me. I even upgraded it from 50mbits lol
DodgeDeBoulet: Not your internet speed, the speed of your connection between your headset and your PC. I'm pretty sure your ISP cannot cap that.
If your PC is connected to your wifi router via ethernet and your headset is connected to 5GHz wifi, you should be able to achieve 866Mb/s between your PC and headset. This would be adequate for most games. If you can obtain a Wifi6E router, you would be easily able to achieve 1Gb/s Ethernet wired speed.
namananabrepusartlU: I don't know how do i find that out?
royaLL2010: Do you use cat5e cables? What Router do you have?
namananabrepusartlU: I don't use any cable right now and my router is a Fritz Box 7590
hansoyvind1: No but like your local network. like from one device on your network to the next device, without going out to the internet.
namananabrepusartlU: Ja danke sehr
jakejm79: A 2.5M ethernet cable must be pretty cheap in Germany to the point it would be easy to test.
That said you'll want to make sure your wireless is fully optimized.
namananabrepusartlU: How do I optimize my wireless?
jakejm79: https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=how+to+optimize+my+wifi
namananabrepusartlU: Thank you :)
aevi: I mean if you use an ethernet cable your PC's internet would be faster as a plus.
But to give my opinion on Wither to get a USB C cable or ethernet. After playing wireless I can't imagine going back, it'll feel way too restrictive imo.
Also if you buy an ethernet you could probably return it if you aren't happy with the results. (Also they aren't too expensive especially if your PC is so close you could buy a short one.)
namananabrepusartlU: So do you think even with only 250mbits it would be good enough to play? I think i will get an Ethernet Cable tomorrow then.
aevi: I believe so, my interest is pretty bad because of the country I live in and it works fine (don't have an exact number atm, sorry about that.)
Also what's the harm in trying? I think it's worth giving a go to see if it works. if it doesn't just a heads up people say not to buy the official Link Cable because it's overpriced apparently most cables work just as well.
Also best of luck, hope it works out for ya'.
namananabrepusartlU: Yes i will try it and i will definitely not get the 100€ cable if i can achieve the same with a 17€ one. Thank you very much :)
