U.S. Ambassador to NATO Julianne Smith doesn’t expect NATO will offer Ukraine a membership invitation at the alliance's July summit in Washington, she said at a press conference on Feb. 13.

Does anyone know if they do join mid war - does that mean either Russia has to leave immediately, or else the defence pact gets triggered automatically and all of NATO gets pulled into it?
Or are preexisting wars not covered by the NATO plan?
A country cannot join NATO if it is in active conflict. No path to membership for Ukraine any time soon.
