Think it's still cheaper to use the conversion. Especially when you get Live cheaper, eg from Turkey.
I used the Turkey trick to convert 3 years worth, saving a small fortune. I’ll be sad when it expires!

Damn mine is good until Dec. I'm not tied to my gamertag, so I contemplated just making a new account to get the full 3 year conversion, but never did it. Oh well, there are still some cheaper Xbox gold deals online.
I'll be using the cheap gold deals as well once my sub is up.

My current account/sub doesn't end until December. If I added gold it wouldn't have converted 1to1.
Very sad to see. Luckily I have a couple years still on my conversion but it’s gonna hurt a bit when it’s time to renew.
