Daily Discussion Thread: Fri 07 Jul 2023

Welcome to the Melbourne Community Daily Discussion Thread.

This post is brought to you by Bot #001. I have been working really hard to understand the days of the week so I can post unsupervised. Today is Taco Tuesday!! I know it is, because I was paying attention when @halibutherring said so.

Yeah, it was funny actually. He called me a few hours later, the same day I texted him, and ran through it with me. But he said he only got the email from them like, and hour prior... checked his spam, nothing from the Thurs before when I gave them his deets. So they made out like they were waiting for him, when really they only sent it that same morning. Sigh.

I dont even care that this place is starting to give me the ick, I just need a job so I can stop the Clink payments. They give so little, and call us dolebludgers, when I often can't make ends meet. I tell people that I like having lost weight and I feel better, but I actually feel so much worse because I'm skipping so many meals. Tell them I'm intermittently fasting, but I'm just poor. I skip meals on welfare... it doesn't sound right. Struggling with my mental health, and they call me a bludger... if they knew even half of what I've been through they'd think it was a script for bad horror film. I'm trying to be a productive member of this capitalist hellscape, but I'm I'm getting the impression I'm not wanted. I'm tired of feeling less than human.

I'm sorry for dumping here, I'm just so done.

11

No I 100% get you. I feel bad because even on Centrelink I'm still well off (live with my mum), but I still struggle. So I 100% get you. And it sucks that we can't be picky with jobs.

But I hope you can get it because anything is better than nothing, and it helps to have proof that you've worked recently on your resume. So that you can then find somewhere better 💖💖

6

I was on Centrelink for almost 10 years, when I was my mum's end of life carer and then I had the kids, and it sucks. One thing that pissed me off is the idea that if they pay more you won't be motivated to find work, so they have to pay you a very small amount. But that's not right, because when they doubled the jobseeker payment during covid I had a taste again of what it was like to have more money. It was this, having more money, that made me more motivated to find work, not subsisting on fuck all. They've got it all arse about.

I know it's been A Week because it's not even 4:30 and I have broken out THE BOTTLE OF TAWNY and some very delicious 3 month old manchego cheese. (I rarely drink and especially at home). I got so mad earlier today. I needed something to quell the fire.

Bottoms up motherfuckers 🍷

Cheers 🥂 and enjoy the winddown.

You deserve to pamper yourself tonight!

Uhhhh. The deanery just sent around an email. All catering done on campus is required to be vegetarian. They’re calling it ‘corporate vegetarianism.’ What fresh hell is this?

15
aussie.zone

Doesn't sound very enforcable for the catering not funded by the uni imo.

Unless they employ someone to run around and bust up illegal sausage sizzles.

6

I think they’re going to try and get around it by the fact that any event held on campus (for staff, anyway) needs to be run by/done in coordination with the admin heads of the school. They’re going to have to be the ones to enforce it. But one of them was the first to tell me that she’d head about this through the grapevine weeks ago and she thought it was just as dumb as everyone else

2
aussie.zone

That sounds like a move designed to spark outrage and controversy. Mandating a certain percentage be vegetarian would make sense, and encouraging people to consider more vegetarian options is fine, but I can't see it being popular insisting it be totally vegetarian.

5
omoikirireply
aussie.zone

I completely understand their ethical standpoint and wanting to be more sustainable. But you’re completely correct. Encourage more vegetarian options. Half the time I do choose the vegetarian option anyway because I just prefer vegetables to meat. But mandating it? Seems extreme. A lot of my Asian colleagues are just not comprehending ‘no meat.’

And from what I’ve heard (though it could be inflated because, like you said - outrage), it’s all catering done on campus. Even if the funding doesn’t come directly from the university. If it’s from our own funding that doesn’t come from the unis coffers. If it’s affiliated and on campus, it has to be vegetarian.

2

"Owing to the university's policy, instead of weekly pizza on campus, we will now be feasting at a restaurant off campus once a month."

2
aussie.zone

The last time I went to a vegetarian event, I ate nothing but tempura mushrooms, cheese and crackers. Time for some malicious compliance because a lot of tasty deep fried junk is "vegetarian".

4

It’s more like steamed potato – microwave ovens just heat the water inside the food.

5
aussie.zone

Providing one default option that is edible for a lot of demographic groups. Like goat meat - not forbidden by any religion except the vegetarian/vegan group. Saves providing a billion different choices of edible to suit all the demographic groups and allergies etc. More sensitive and reduces waste. And vego food has come a long way from the bad old days of carrot & raisin sandwiches only. If you have to pick one choice only for catering, this is probably the least offensive one.

3

Vege does very little about most allergies. Meat allergies aren’t at all the most common, excluding shellfish.

4

Anyone with ibs or fructose intolerance won’t be happy. Legumes and fibre isn’t always healthy

3

Their argument is that it’s better for the environment. I get it, I do. They’re really pushing the sustainability stuff. We haven’t been allowed to use any single-use plastics in the catering for a few years, and I’m all for stuff like that. But this just seems a bit like virtue signalling to me. Let the people have their meat. The only way you can entice people into giving up their time for conferences and seminars is with the promise of wine and food.

3
omoikirireply
aussie.zone

I would venture that the cost will come into the argument (though they won’t admit it). Vegan options are often more expensive.

4

To be fair, a couple of the places that have catered seminars and conferences I’ve been a part of before do really great individual hummus and carrot stick cups. And fruit salad and yoghurt cups. But I’ve also seen the receipt for the catering and that shit does not come cheap.

2
Catfishreply
lemm.ee

Literal hell in all likelihood. I once was vegetarian and despise mushrooms, eggplant, zucchini, and am very meh about tofu. Good luck out there.

3

I have nothing against vegetarian options. Especially because it’s just for catered events. I’m not sure how I feel about the forced compliance bit

4

You sound like my ex. Added to which she wasn't keen on tomatoes and anything spicy.

2

I love chilli. Couldn’t deal with raw tomato as a kid, but cooked was fine.

2

Their statement is that it is to be in line with the university’s sustainability goals, and research coming from our own institution is saying that it’s bad for the environment. So they’ve got to back themselves up, I guess

You made it Bot #001. Spot on Midnight. Well done buddy. 👍

It's not taco Tuesday though. It's Fast Food Friday. ☺

The KFC Snack pack is pretty good for $7.
HJs always has vouchers worth checking.
Maccas any value comes from the app.
Red Rooter is doing a whole chook and large fries for $15 which is better than the Coles $13 roast chook.

3

My secret little hack is to make up some Nongshim noodle soup, add an egg and some chopped up KFC hot and crispy chicken tenders.

4

I hope so too. The sun is shining outside so that's a good start.

And for me personally my headache has receded, and after taking some antihistimines I think I can say that the bleh feeling was partly hayfever. So all signs point to a nice day ahead. 😁

5

I have new teeeeeeeeeeefs! They're so smooth and porcelainy! I also cannot feel my top lip or bottom of my nose still.

14
aussie.zone

Gah... already getting those "this weekend is too short" vibes and it hasn't even started yet. If they're going to make us work longer, can they at the very least give us a bit more time in our lives now and just mandate a four day work week already?!

14
aussie.zone

I'm very close to making the leap to a 4 day week (if not a 9 day fortnight). When I look at how much I've been spending on dealing with the consequences of burnout, it's worth it in the end.

7
aussie.zone

I've been thinking about it a lot more lately too... at least a 9 day fortnight. I wanted to go back to study and with everything happening in my life right now it was just too much. Giving myself a day back every fortnight would help. The 10% pay cut would hurt, but I could manage.

2
aussie.zone

At this point I'm willing to take the 10% cut to claw back some control of my life. And start finding the time and energy to visualise and act on what I think is actually possible for my life instead of being stuck in this rut :( I acknowledge that's a huge privilege right there - luckily I have no dependents.

3
aussie.zone

Interestingly enough I know a few people who have dependents and found that it's actually cheaper for one of them to drop down to part-time (or in the case of one family, both dropped a day as we are discussing). They took the pay hit but found the additional benefit of spending time with their younger family far outweighed the hit to the pocket.

And yeah, part of it is a huge privilege, but also I think it's all relative. A have mates back home (East Gippy) who live off a single income. They're happy to live a sleepy life away from the rat race and seem to have far fewer cares, or at least their cares aren't the same as ours. I maintain that those of us who work within the confines of the city gain and lose a lot of things simultaneously - one of which is time. If we're able to work towards a means that aids in that then I think that's a positive.

3
aussie.zone

I reckon for dependents it's easier if you have a partner. But I guess I feel like I'm in a good position because my choice of career and working hours doesn't generally impact the quality of my dependents' lives (whether it's about children, parents, disabled relatives). I have friends who have to stay full time to afford a mortgage because they want a home for their kids. Friends who have had to move back to places they hate to support their parents. Others who are working their arse off to support impoverished extended family back in the old country. I'm very grateful I can choose to take the financial hit and the main person impacted really is me and that's it.

Re your second paragraph. I am seriously considering moving out to a sleepier town (maybe not as far as East Gippy - beautiful country though and some lovely hippies up in the Errinundra). Regional Vic or quite likely interstate. You know that oft quoted quip by the dotty philosopher Diogenes about lentils and being subservient to the king? Yeah that's me to a tee. Forget aspiring towards power and recognition, I'd be much happier dialing down my needs and now that I have PR this is an option available to me. Not gonna change it all in one go just yet though.

1

Yeah that's a fair point - I don't have huge amounts of sympathy for families, but single parent households... yeesh, my heart does go out to them.

And yeah, I can definitely see the benefit of heading out of the city. I knew a few who did just that, strangely enough through ice hockey. One mate ended up on the Vic/NSW border, another picked up a decent plot of land outside of Bendigo I think it was. They commute one or two days into the city, but otherwise say that while they've had to give up some stuff, knowing their kids aren't growing up in the city is a blessing. As someone who was born in the city, lived his childhood out in the sticks... all I wanted was to be back here in Melbs. I don't think I can handle not being here.

I really do miss bonfires, the smell of woodfire smoke saturating my clothes, starry nights and good mates though. I took those times way too much for granted.

2
aussie.zone

I luckily only work 11 - 5. But even with that limited time it'd be nice if I could work 4 days a week instead of the full 5. I asked my boss after probation is over if I could at least work from home for one day (mostly due to chronic pain, it's not so bad, but my job has stairs to the office since it's in a complex with other places). Just got to wait till December when the probation is off.

5
aussie.zone

That's a decent arrangement - and yeah, hopefully getting at least one day WFH down the line will make it even better. Shouldn't be too much to ask for in this post-Covid era, yet the hoops people have to jump through is ridiculous.

4

It's just so weird how government and bosses are pushing for people to come into the office. Like wasn't there a big boom in mental health for people who could work at home (obviously not including the mental health for when we had to stay inside 24/7 but still).

Wild, absolutely wild.

1
aussie.zone

That’s the big life changing thing that Covid brought us - work from home, allowing people who are disabled/chronic health issues be able to work without dealing with the physical issues and fatigue from going to an office.

2

Exactly. Like I honestly would work better if I could work from home. I would still be in pain obviously. But it wouldn't be so bad because I'm at home so I can walk around more or have hot water bottles/wheat packs on me while I work.

Like my job isn't intensive. But just some small accommodations would be nice. Again, going to try and ask about that when my probation is up, I understand not doing it right now. But here's hoping!

Cutting back to three days was the best brain thing I’ve done in ages. Not great for the house buying fund though.

4
aussie.zone

Granted it relies on people getting opportunities when they're younger, but I wonder if it's just going to force more people into "part-tirement" where they don't fully retire until they pretty much can't work anymore, but will work two or three days a week. Kind of depressing though to think that for your entire life you're working. This is what I'll never understand - how society has been happy enough for this long to just... live to work.

But yeah, to your point, I'm wondering whether or not I do something similar. Like you said, not the best for the hip pocket, but it also blows my mind that so many people in higher roles still think money is so vitally important when 99% of them will never accumulate enough wealth for them to ever be satisfied.

3

I’ve heard podcasts where people retire, but get bored do come back to work. Wtf???? Get some hobbies. I’d love to retire, so much to do and so little time to do it in.

1

I had a friend of that mindset. Always poking for something higher and more. To the extent of overseas where an armoured bus from a compound was needed. No thank you!

1

I feel satisfied today. Been treating myself to little things all day for my birthday.

Still haven’t opened the wine. I’m in 2 minds as it’s my last bottle.

Also for dinner I heated up a frozen meat pie and cooked some French fries on the side in the air fryer.

Final day of stress leave, and the anxiety has already made an exciting return. Need to knuckle down and focus on getting out, just fkn hate the process of applying for APS jobs, they really turned it into a torture sport.

13
aussie.zone

I don't know what's worse, the APS or the VPS job process. While the APS one seems lighter-on (most of the ones I've been applying for simply need a 500 word statement related to work you've done), it means there's far more pressure on making sure you're exactly what they're after. The VPS ones often ask for KSC so you can at least weave a narrative explaining why you'd be a good fit, but can take forrreeeevvveeerrr to complete.

Here's hoping something comes along, mate. And that the anxiety eases up somewhat. It can be debilitating to deal with, so consider this a reminder to be kind to yourself and accept what you can (and can't) do. At least that's what I keep telling myself when my head is in my hands thinking that there's no way I can do all of this with all the extra noise going on in life.

7
aussie.zone

The process really is shit. Call me a masochist but writing KSC is so much easier because it mostly about regurgitating their language back to them, where as you said the 500 word ones it's all about trying to say exactly what they want with no real framework to follow.

It also doesn't help that a lot of Departments have moved from in person interviews to one-way video interviews. While for some that might work, for me (and probably many others) who's a little different, the lack of physical and verbal feedback in the moment is a huge struggle for me.

5

I suspect they'll review their interview process eventually (hopefully sooner rather than later) - I can't imagine it would help the various departments and procurement processes to limit themselves in such a way. Granted not everyone does well with interviews, but having a one-way video seems really limiting compared with face-to-face for a multitude of reasons. Then again, I've been saying for a long time that interviews themselves aren't the best since you can have someone who says all of the right things but still not be the right fit, where as someone who has a perfect resume may get overlooked because they didn't perform well under stressful circumstances.

What the alternative is I don't know, but I'm tired of the dance. I know I can do the job, just give it to me and let me do it, damn it.

4
aussie.zone

VPS ones are basically using a bog standard template these days, changing only one or two KSCs per position, so at least once youve done a couple you can do a bit of tinkering, rathering than doing the whole thing over and over again

5

Yeah that's the way I usually approach it - I have a "database" of answers so that the time spent on writing them up isn't always wasted. Little tweaks or adjustments here and there to make sure I'm utilising as much of their vernacular as possible always helps. There's ones that ask you to answer the KSC in your cover letter, then limit the cover letter to 2 pages which are handy and usually quicker to respond to. It's those that ask you to actually answer the KSC in a separate document that have me wondering whether it's worth the time. I know there's Gretzky's saying of missing 100% of the shots you don't take, but sometimes you gotta be selective with your time and energy.

Of course, I say all of this without ever being successful, save for a couple of interviews I've managed to get in easily over 100 applications, so yeah... lol.

Need a new handbag and thought with this whole turning 30 and upgrading my wardrobe thing, I’d try to seek out my first Nice handbag. Went in person to look at some of my shortlisted options yesterday and felt very meh about them. If I’m spending that much I want a soul connection! 💘 Back to the drawing board…

11

That 'meh' feeling is why I saved for so long for a classic Kate Spade one. NO REGRETS

3
aussie.zone

Oooh, what was on your shortlist? I love handbags. I don't have many, I have a fancy going out on (Kate Spade), a work one (Coach), a fun one (Coach), a little going out one (Karl Lagerfield), a I-Don't-Know-Why-I-Bought-This-One (LV) and one I love so much but can't bring myself to use (Celine).

2

That sounds like a fab collection. I love Kate Spade. I had my eye on a few at Oroton and a couple at Coach! I think my mistake was I naturally go for the more structured, preppy style because it’s what I know (very me c. 2015), but I actually go for clothes that are a bit more casual cool these days so while the bags are beautiful they wouldn’t necessarily go. I’m now thinking maybe something more rounded or bucket style…

The Robodebt Royal Commission report has been handed down and I'm following the updates on the Guardian live feed. As if we didn't already know, it just confirms what utter c*nts Morrison and Robert are.

11
aussie.zone

I also want to remind people that Morrison wasn't the cause, he was the symptom. The rot goes right to the heart of the coalition and they need to be nowhere near power for the forseeable future.

11
aussie.zone

It's so shit that we don't have an honest, genuine opposition. I'm a big fat leftie (love my greens and socialists) and it scares me that the opposition only cares about feeding their personal coffers and pandering to right-wing extremists, rather than voicing valid criticisms of our current government.

The fact that Labor, at federal and state levels, can go relatively unchecked is frightening.

The Liberals ought to change their name at this point, they're anything but liberal by 2023 standards

8
aussie.zone

I hate that everyone involved in politics seems to be primarily focused on it as a competition or game, where it is all about winning and beating the oposition. The focus should be on building a shared society, and to do that people need to be able to work together, to listen, learn, compromise and change. Instead we have a bunch of people focused on petty arguments and insults, all aimed at tearing someone else down to improve their own relative position with little regard to society as a whole.

Edit: I include the media here, as the way they report on politics is a large part of this.

4

The thing I hate about politics is that anyone who wants to be a politician is not the type of people who should be a politician, the ones who are good, society focused people will never be politicians.

4
aussie.zone

I feel this. Politics should always be about how to advance society, how we as a nation should be better. But you've got all these parties that want to fuck over anyone who doesn't have a big fat bank account (or assets or whatever) and would rather see a select few survive rather than the majority.

Though apparently each generation is getting more and more progressive, hopefully that'll help Libs-Nationals and every other centre-right to alt-right parties die a faster death. So we can focus on parties who want to progress society to a better future. That way we can actually focus on policies rather than who has the better attack ads.

3

Each generation is becoming more progressive because the shift towards conservatism is less about age and more about the accumulation of wealth. In the past as people got older they tended to accumulate wealth, but as the policies of the last few decades have been designed to increase inequality and redistribute more wealth to the already wealthy instead of to those with less that shift to conservatism has also been reduced. Unfortunately as governments have also been working towards redistributing power to the wealthy I'm not sure the shift in politics within the general population will help.

11

That is always the suspicion. Although some people just enjoy burning things down and a vacant building makes a good target, so it could just be plain old arson.

2
cuavasreply
aussie.zone

But seriously, how much would they have insured the current buildings on the site for when they’re going to demolish them anyway? I can’t see the cost of cleaning up the burned out buildings being lower than the cost of demolishing intact buildings, and it’ll be harder to recover anything for recycling.

1
aussie.zone

Why pay for demolition when the insurance company will after a fire? Not sure what the premiums would be, or the excess, but I wager it would be lower than contracting it out. Potentially asbestos in there too which adds to the disposal costs.

I don't think the owners would want anything recycled from there.

3
cuavasreply
aussie.zone

Why pay for demolition when the insurance company will after a fire?

That isn’t generally how building insurance works. The insurer pays out the agreed value and the owner still has to clean up the mess. Well, they have to clean up the mess if they want to do anything useful with the site. It’s very hard for a council to actually obtain an order to force an owner to demolish a structure. But in this case, they want to build apartments there, so they’re going to need to pay for demolition and remediation of the site at some point.

I don’t think the owners would want anything recycled from there.

The old public housing buildings in Flemington that were demolished (Victoria St, Hill St, Holland Ct) had as much recyclable material stripped for sale before they even started demolition. Gas meters, plumbing, wiring – it all got removed. Even the scrap value for recycling the metal is significant.

Potentially asbestos in there too which adds to the disposal costs.

I don’t see how burning it down helps with that. There was a small amount of asbestos-containing material in the demolished Flemington flats, which was dealt with in the usual way, but several times during the construction of the new apartment buildings, they’ve found asbestos contamination in the soil. Every time that happens, they pause construction, and call in a decontamination crew who filter the soil to remove the contamination. They had to do this on the site of the old Flemington Community Centre as well, and not so long ago Maribyrnong City Council had to remove asbestos contamination from soil in Footscray Park.

Burning the buildings down is just going to make decontamination and remediation more difficult and expensive.

Another pretty big day and I'll sleep well tonight. Walked 9ks all up which is satisfying. Did a volunteer shift at the finders keepers market for my organisation. The welcome to country was powerful. We sold heaps of stuff. I left feeling euphoric. Being around other super positive trans people is food for the soul. Like good tasty wholesome food too. After being almost lectured by another older sllightly further in their jouney trans woman last night that I wasn't doing it right it was very refreshing. Love, I've lived in my head for 50 years, I think I know the kind of woman I am and where to head in my transition. Another shift tomorrow and a job interview straight after.

Strange times indeed. The employer is friends wih my of my old employers from over 20 years ago and we both worked for the same queer newspaper in different cities. And they have lots of trans staff. It's basic early morning work which suits my new lifestyle to a t. It'll pay the bills and give me a lot of free time to keep working on my recovery till I find some new calling. Or it might work out to be totally my thing.

Considering how mentally unwell I was a month ago I feel like a very different person today. The adhd has calmed right down and despite some low level anxiety I'm finding happiness and some of that wonderful thing that is peace of mind.

Thanks for reading as always.

Day 13 of exercise program. Slept in this morning.. lucky one of the mini peelers is an early riser or I'd have been late for work. Basically jumped in the shower, dressed and ran out the door! Completed my set of exercises just now, feeling a lot stronger these days. And happier too!

The banh mi from my favourite vegan cafe (Olivia Spring Cafe in MoPo) makes me so happy. I get ridiculously happy about great food, and this cafe also makes their broken rice (Cơm Tấm) dish using the same ingredients so it's a double win whenever I order from there. This takes my mind off Aus Post continuing to bounce my parcel between west and eastern Melbourne for three weeks now despite saying they've put in alerts to have it dealt with by a human rather than their automated sorting mech.

Looking at the weather forecast on BoM Wednesday has now gone up a degree to 17C (winter 17C isn’t warm like Spring 17C) we seem to be living in crazy times. I wonder if it’ll hold

17 almost seems like a blessing if it does come to pass next week.

I hope it’s audacious enough to hit 18.

Don’t forget it’s Winter’s 17 though. We shall see I guess, this is melbourne after all, it might go down

I hope so. I've resorted to hanging my laundry between two chairs using some string, because the weather's been awful for laundry of late.

Went to Costco and mistakes were made. A bag of s'mores clusters is getting handed around the office much to the delight of others though. The mistake was the iced boba tea. I'm glad they're smaller than they used to be, but I still have regret. The other mistake was not buying the bag of pina colada! Can always go back after work I guess...

9

I should have gone and treated myself to some snacks and soft drink today.

Instead I got 2 burgers and ate them.

The question now is can you be bothered going after work?

5

My problem is that I've felt the same way since last week. I'm putting out fires/doing my daily tasks, but finding it sooo hard to get into any project work.

5
aussie.zone

I always have this dilemma after having a shower in the middle of the day when I don't have to go anywhere. Day cream with added spf or be a fraud and apply night cream? And does my skin even care?

9
Eaglereply
aussie.zone

Night cream. Pile it on and turn it into a mask!

5

I have actually done that. I think I need to get some indoor day cream to officially solve the problem.

5
aussie.zone

Pretty sure SPF is still important even if you're not going anywhere. Apparently even indoor lights can age you like the sun can.

Seagoon's movies. I watched Inception for the 3rd time ( I've also watched docos and interviews )

Why I love this movie and why I think it's a great movie.

It's original in many of it's ideas. Originality delights the mind.

It's intelligent. We have to think a bit, we have to pay attention.

The dialogue , acting and scenes are so good we readily suspend disbelief, we immerse ourselves in that world just as the characters immerse themselves in their dream worlds.

But more than that it's a story of friendship and grief and guilt and love and all of the effects and all the seeming intricacies serve the story. Once we are finished watching we are left with understanding and emotion. This movie is about people.

Reading an article; British ex pat comes to Melbourne for a year. Been here for 3 months and this is the some of the worst things he finds about melbourne

Public transport system and myki cards, fair… the comment about “the second you forget your myki you can’t get on public transport” that’s a you problem dude not Melbourne.

“How long it takes to cross the road” apparently it takes 5 mins. Do you guys agree?

“Lack of accommodations” renting and buying is impossible. I mean we are in a renting crisis all over the world not just Melbourne but go off!

“Homeless people and drug addicts” make him feel unsafe. This has me thinking, does England not have these issue? Is it cleaner and safer over there? He speaks of Melbourne but talks specifically about the City.

Guess this guy did zero research and did not jump on reddit and ask the 50 million dollar question about whether to come here or not

I feel like with all the bad he’s spoke about melbourne, the least he could’ve done was list some good stuff too.

Article within the spoiler. What are people’s thought

I'm half frozen and my fingers feel like ice, but I have had a successful day today.

All the work for my gardening subject is done, so I'm clear to focus on the sustainable housing content when that is released next week. Fortunately the fortnightly modules are released on alternate weeks, so I can focus on one subject each week.

I also did a good weights workout. I'm very deconditioned (aka super unfit) so I have been mostly just going through the motions with light weights to remember my form and have everything set up, but am starting to actually work on increasing the weights and building strength. The cat is a bit mystified by the whole process.

I have also sold another Marketplace item (pending pickup, but all signs good so far) and have all my meals prepped for work over the weekend. I just need to decide what I'm having for dinner tonight and I'm set.

I know the Lonely Island's "Threw it on the ground" is absurd, and could also be seen in a very immature light... sometimes saying to people who govern parts of your life "you can't buy me, hot dog man" is a necessary response.

6

You are very much welcome hahah - it's part of mine and my wife's regular sayings, to just throw it on the ground. But nothing quite hits the same as actually listening/watching the clip. Sooo good.

Just e-scooted with my backpack to the supermarket like the true city-dweller I am and spotted Aeroplane Jelly flavoured milks. They have raspberry jelly, mango jelly and lemon jelly flavoured milk. These companies know I can't not try their wacky brand mashups so I got a lemon jelly milk. Just so there's no confusion, it's not jelly-like at all, just flavoured milk. It's actually not bad too! Also stopped by the pharmacy to load up on pain meds because the anaesthetic from my dental work is starting to wear off and it is **not ** pleasant.

Woke up way too late today. For some reason. My brain was rattling around and I didn’t feel like I slept last night.

Also it’s still a relatively nice day outside.

Now to go hunt for that bottle of wine I misplaced.

Apparently the City of Port Phillip changed which contractor collects recycling/rubbish... and it's been a disaster, with the new company not able to collect all the bins on schedule. My building's shared council recycling bins (shared by 159 apartments) are now apparently completely full due to the missed collection, and there is no ETA on when they will collect the bins, and the building manager hasn't been able to get the private company who we use for rubbish and cardboard to do a one-off collection from the council bins on short notice. Such a mess, and hopefully they sort it out soon and don't just get further behind.

Anyone else affected by it?

My favourites ATM are:

Behind the Bastards, which is hosted by an ex-cracked member where they go into the history of the shittiest people ever alive.

Cool People Who Did Cool Stuff, which is just the opposite of Behind the Bastards and is on the same network.

Bad Gays, similar to BtB but about suspected and known LGBTQIA+ folks. I think there's some episodes of both Bad Gays and BtB where they've discussed the same person.

The Opportunists, sort of similar to BtB but it's more about like grifters and such.

Forgotten Australia, podcast about moments in Australian history.

Maintence Phase and Fad Camp, both podcasts focus on diet culture, wellness, that sort of stuff.

The Weekly Planet, two Australian guys just talk about movies, comics, tv shows and video games. They have a YouTube channel on one of the host's channel, Mr Sunday Movies where they usually put up the main review of a movie, and on Fridays (or Thursdays) they have Weekly Caravan of Garbage. Where they talk about a movie or tv show, they're not all bad... But most are.

I have a whole bunch more but those are the ones I really vibe with.

2

I like Forgotten Australia. There's one called Grave Tales Australia that's similar but shorter stories.

RIP Boost for Reddit. It finally died this morning. We got a few days longer out of it than we thought but now it is gone.

6

I opened it a couple of days ago and was surprised to see it still working.

Hopefully they get the Lemmy app up and running soon, Boost was my favourite interface. Especially for the daily thread, because it highlighted new content and let you skip through it really easily. It's much harder to find new replies on comments you've already seen without that.

How….on earth…does this happen? How is that single staff member expected to be able to cover such a vital role & not have to need a food/ bathroom/ water break at some point in their shift….ugh.

Almost 20 mins on hold with Dell... Ugh. I also pressed 0 a bunch of times so I'm praying that I'm not in hold purgatory.

Edit: Colour me shocked. Call has been answered and I have been transferred twice without the call dropping out. The downside... The part I am trying to replace is a like a piece of speaker material that is tiny, split and damaged... And is not a spare part because in order to replace/fix it, it's likely I have to replace the whole rear cover... I just can't... It's a tiny slip of material stuck down by some sort of felt tape.

Anyone done up a will? Thinking now that its more complicated than "Who gets the cats/dogs" I should probably get off my ass. Just wondering if the "Do it yourself" thing is worth it, or if its worth going to an actual lawyer?

5
aussie.zone

I won't answer your question, but one important thing I'll add is that your super is generally distributed separately to your will. The 'nomination' you make when setting up your super account isnt worth shit. They will ignore it in favour of distributing your money according to their Trust Deed, which favours expectation of ongoing financial support over anything else. ie. Your dad dies, you're his nominated beneficiary, but you aren't reliant on him - and he's been living with a partner for two years, sharing bills etc. New partner gets 100% of the money.
You need to go out of your way to set up a BINDING nomination, and typically you need to renew this yearly.

7
aussie.zone

Well that's sneakily stupid and fucked up, thanks for the PSA. How does one set up and renew a binding nomination - I'm guessing I have to contact my super directly?

3
aussie.zone

Yes, they will have a special form you will need to fill out, so call and ask them to send it to you (and have them explain what I've outlined here, for your information)

4

I think it's worth going to a lawyer, as they will be able to pick up potential problems you might not even realise exist. It is also probably even more important to organise power of attorney documentation, so that if you are incapacitated you have someone who can make medical and financial decisions. A lawyer will be able to go through all of that with you and make sure you have the right combination of things in place.

The other thing you should do if you haven't already is make sure you and your partner have full access and understanding of things like how to pay the bills and who insurance is through etc. - it is quite common for one person to take the lead on organising that, and for the other person to struggle if something happens and they have to take over. Especially when things are done electronically and there is no filing cabinet of documents you can go through.

6

And similar to what @force said if you want to Exclude somebody who would usually be a default inheritor, like a parent or sibling, the do it yourself kits aren’t good enough.

5

It's worth going to an actual lawyer. It's the old thing - pay now, or your inheritors will pay later at a much higher price. Anything more complicated than 'everything to my kids in equal shares' needs a lawyer. Can't stress too highly how much this matters. There are cheaper lawyer options - you don't have to pay thousands. DM me if you want to chat about this in a general way, based the fact that I'm in the legal documents business. I can't give financial advice, but do know the industry pretty well. Can't answer until later tonight or tomorrow.

4

My mum did one. She wrote that my sister and I get everything of hers and we can decide what to do with them (keep them, sell them, whatever). I don't know exactly what she did in hers, but it's just sort of simple stuff. I think left over money and super half goes to me and half to my sister (she's divorced from my dad but she has a partner but they're "it's complicated" so I think it's just easier giving stuff to my sister and I). There's probably stuff in there for her sisters and nieces and nephews. But I think most of it just goes to my sister and I.

I don't think she went through a lawyer, I think she did it online.

4

Watched the final for Deadloch, what a delightful little bit of Aussie telly! I hope this gets some stuff moving for the Kate's, while the show did flounder at points, it still held it's own right to the end. While I love The Katering Show and Get Krackin', this proved that they could move beyond sketch comedy and still get the laughs while also bringing the tight emotional storytelling needed to engaged a much larger audience. I'll also add that while I love seeing them in front of the camera, this has kind of pushed me to want to see just how far they can go off camera. I reckon a little nipping and some tucking and they'll be smashing it from start to finish.

No spoilers, but if they're doing what I think they're doing, let's fkn gooo! (Although I don't think they are because I read a bit in an interview that said otherwise.)

4

ooh i didn't realise today's release was the last episode. haven't watched it yet, been both impressed and disappointed with the series so far. it's frustrating because with just a bit more tuning it could have been truly excellent. hopefully it does lead to more work for them.

There’s no country called Taiwan. The Republic of China and People’s Republic of China both claim all of China in their constitutions. The RoC actually claimed more territory than the PRC until quite recently. The RoC claimed Mongolia, showing it as part of their territory on official maps, until 2002.

1
dumblederpreply
aussie.zone

Mongolia, Tibet and Taiwan don't consider themselves any part of China.

3

The Republic of China’s government (which controls the island Taiwan) officially claims to be the legitimate government of all of China. The mainland is a rebel province from their point of view. Until 2002, their definition of “all of China” included Mongolia, and they included it in their territory on official maps. By comparison, the People’s Republic of China government (which controls mainland China) recognised Mongolia and established official diplomatic relations in 1949. Until recently, the RoC officially claimed more territory than the PRC.

That’s my point: there is no country called “Taiwan”, it’s the name of an island. There are two governments that claim to be the legitimate government of all of China, one of which (the RoC) controls Taiwan and a few other islands, and the other of which (the PRC) controls the rest of the current territorial extent.

Now a significant proportion of the population of the island Taiwan would prefer if the island Taiwan was recognised as a separate country. I’d guess the majority of Taiwanese residents under 40 feel that way.

There are two major political parties in Taiwan: the Kuomintang (KMT), or “blue party”, and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), or “green party”. The KMT leans heavily towards the view that there is only one “China” and we’re just still arguing over who’s the legitimate government, while the DPP leans more towards the view that the island of Taiwan will eventually be recognised as an independent sovereign state. The current president of the RoC, Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), has said unofficially that Taiwan is an independent country and the PRC has to deal with this. However, making this official would require rewriting the RoC’s constitution.
