This should be a good way to restrict dodgy business practices

Let's hope so, the EU has been on a good streak lately regarding consumer rights.

Yeah the idea of only needing to purchase and carry one charging brick and USB-C cable for all devices I own is lovely.

Only issue kind of is smart watches.

I agree, but it is going to increase the charging time for a car by quite a bit unless the USB spec advances significantly.

There are edge cases, but it catches above 95% of consumer electronics.

Oh 100% it's better than 6 different charging cables for various different devices.

but trying to fit a receptacle in a smart watch is also not a good solution.

including a small usb-c to whatever the hell adapter would be great too. just so the cable isn't in the way all the time.

I mean I imagine most all smart watches will switch to a portless design with a wireless puck, then you just make the puck detachable from the cable and with a USB-C port on the side. Problem solved.

Qi charging has improved, but still can't beat a plug. When you forget to charge your watch and in a hurry it's hard to beat a plug charge.

Some kind of adjusted Qi2 standard for all smartwatches would be nice.

Yeah I mentioned this in another comment, as long as the wireless puck is USB-C then you can still carry just one USB-C cable and power brick.

My Apple Watch has a usb-c cable with a puck. One charging brick is sufficient, at least for my iPhone, Kindle and Watch. But there are so many other devices

The issue is then that's one USB-C to Cable for all your devices except for the watch which needs one USB-C to puck... The solution would be a puck with a detachable USB-C to C cable.

Then I could take a Laptop, Phone, Tablet (if required) and Watch and just one cable/charging brick.

My watch isblike that. It's an old Huawei Watch GT and has a puck to charge wich I plug in my USB-C cable in.

2

Yeah that would be ideal, I've found a few third party solutions with detachable USB-C pucks for the Apple watch, a first party solution would be ideal though.

How is this going to impact quick battery swap arrangments?

10

Sounds like the battery itself will have a QR code, so I imagine manufacturers of interchangeable packs will have to print the QR code on the battery pack itself.
