I may be an idiot, but I see these pictures and wonder how on earth they get this many aeroplanes on and off the carrier?

I know this carrier has three decks for planes; what you are seeing and two hanger decks below. I’m not an expert in WW2 carriers but I assume that in a combat orientation the top deck wouldn’t be so crowded and that this picture is just of transporting as many planes as possible somewhere.

I wish I had a more concrete answer.

I had the opportunity to walk around the USS Wasp at Alameda Island a few years back, wish I had asked one of the docents then!
