You don't notice trans people who pass specifically because they pass. It's a sampling bias problem. You only notice the ones that stand out. Statistics would say you've met plenty of trans people without even realizing it.
It's still fairly likely you've met one and not known it, unless you're hanging out in your small town and not meeting anyone new. You'd be surprised at how well some people can pass with only hair, style, and makeup.
And yeah, so long as you're being nice, asking questions is a great way to learn! Plus, it helps other people who are too afraid to ask for themselves.

So I would assume fancy dress party at a bar, house, or other venue. I guess technically it could even be a party being thrown at a gym, but there are no contextual clues that would indicate that.
