Opossums (usually pronounced as ‘possum but the o actually isn’t silent) are the marsupials that live in the Americas, the most familiar of which being the Virginia opossum. Possums live in Australia.
Same thing, just word play. One is official. You wouldn't expect to see a discussion of taters in a science journal, but you could be asked to bring tater salad to the cookout.
