Femdom might be expressed in many ways, from the porn standard women in fetish gear and whips, to a D/s relationship where a woman is in charge with no additional props. In heterosexual relationships, femdom is often combined with elements that play with and explore gender roles, for example strapon play, where the submissive is penetrated, or cross dressing, often with the deliberate attempt to humiliate and demean or play with behaviors that are normally taboo to standard displays of masculinity.
A female dominant in a master/slave relationship is often termed a Mistress, not to be confused with the colloquial usage of mistress as a kept sexual partner without a similarly formalized power relationship.
