GPD has finally released what they're calling the "GPD Tool", a replacement for MotionAssistant that is controller accessible and more streamlined. Droix has done a great write-up about it with download links to the latest versions of the tool.

In many ways it's quite an improvement from MotionAssistant, so definitely give it a look if you're using any of the GPD handheld devices.

So far I think this is only the 4th reported unit that died entirely with no notice during gaming, but if anyone else has had the issue it would be good to start corroborating details as we've had 2 additional users from the Unofficial GPD Discord have this happen as well.

In my case I had been using the SlimQ charger ("SlimQ 150W DC GaN Charger Block 3-Port (1DC + 2USB-C) PD3.0, Compact Folding Plug model F150") with the barrel plug (not USB-C) at the time that it died, but had been using a mix of that and the GPD charger overall. Unit pretty much exclusively ran with the 85W TDP limit, without battery attached. Game I was playing was not using more than about 25W-30W. Hadn't had any of the crashes or other issues others had, didn't have the SSD problem, and the SSD didn't have any firmware updates. Further, the SSD worked fine when I pulled it from the drive to image it before RMAing it.

I probably had about 150-200 hours of gameplay on the unit before it committed suicide. It's on its way back to China now, cost about $175 to ship. GPD was very responsive in getting the RMA set up.

UPDATE: It took a little over a month, but the GPD Win 5 has been returned back fom RMA and works perfectly again. According to the tech who repaired the unit, "the EC was damaged so some other IC were damaged too", and further confirmed that the damage was not caused by using the SlimQ power instead of the OEM charger. Lastly, "we have made the improvement on DC port, so people was got the new DC port replaced who sent the unit back since this issue", alluding to some kind of iterative change they've made to ensure this type of failure doesn't recur.

GPD has released a software only version of the fix for the screen stuttering issue in the GPD Win 4. The .EXE file IC/EC flash can be found here:

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED IN THE FILE -- both readme.txt and readme_EC.txt -- (or follow se1000's new guide here) -- you MUST do both the EC flash (WIN4-V08.00.zip) and IC flash (Win4_LCD_Update.exe) to fix the stuttering. The IC flash will not work until you have done the EC flash.

• Extract WIN4-V08.00.zip to the root of a USB stick
• Boot from that USB stick (press F7 while booting to bring up the boot menu)
• Follow the on-screen instructions to update the EC to V08.00
• Unplug the USB stick and reboot Windows
• Fully close MotionAssistant -- if it is running, it will stop the flash from succeeding.
• Run the Win4_LCD_Update.exe as Administrator (REQUIRED -- right click, run as Admin) to update the Display IC
